I am jaded, I've seen too many kids jacked up in cars their parents bought them. What you are doing, building a car up with your kid, is awesome and I don't think you you should stop just pause to make sure the kid understands responsibilty. It sounds like he's getting the message though so I hope to hear more progress reports as you guys do the car up.:thumbup

grades are hagging in there. Paint is $5500

BUT--- I traded withe shop and paint guys so I have acutally paid any money . I traded my services in my business for their work on the car. Value of my services was about $30,000. about 25 hours of my time... so they are way ahead, but everybody is happy so it is cool... Paint is promised to be a show stopper

PICs will be posted when complete

Man you guys are so mean.

Do you know how hard it is to get a 4.0 GPA in high school? this is't in your old timer days. every day we get more and mroe stuff thrown on top of the bullcrap we already have to do. And new standirdized tests and everything! I'm 15, I know, believe me.

I think you should teach him yourself how to drive the car. You're obviously experienced, show him what to do, and even show him what not to do. and tell him to not drift a 240 in the rain without a lot fo experience.

*EDIT* sorry, just read the entire thing. You're a great dad :icesangel :ylsuper

I did crazy stupid thigs when I was 16 and brave. My sons did crazy stupid things when they were 16 and brave. My grandson did crazy things when he was 16 and brave. No, it's not bad genes, it's just being 16! He survived, make sure he learns something positive. I would not let him into the 240 until he had done as much of the repair work himself that he could possibly do. That would mean that you would have to be the stern supervisor, at his side, but only watching, passing tools, guiding. Oh, yeah- he pays for the parts. Hopefully you will both have a positive "bonding" experience, he will learn appreciation for what you bought him and driving privileges in general. Or, you can just let him become another spoiled kid with Daddies car. Hate to see that. Dad, you got a real opportunity here.

Pretty soon my dad is going to be getting rid of my '86 thunderbird that I wasted 80 hours of my time on, and as soon as I get a job we are looking for a 240sx. I know how you guys feel with the handouts idea, and I would pay for my own 240 if i had the money. So, instead my dad is going to get me a decent S13, under the requirement that I have to pay for any repairs/parts/labor etc to get it running like I want it. I got my uncle to help me too, since my dad hates cars ;)

I agree with a lot of people here, make sure he knows that driving is a responsibility, because I have seen to many teenages handed the keys to nice cars, well cars that WERE nice. Most teens don't have that common sense that comes from experience, and most end tragicially with monetary damage or physical injury somewhere along the line. This is coming from a 17 y/o too, lol. So just make sure he realizes that he needs to recognize driving as a privilege, not a god given right. I think you are doing great, making him work on the car, and work hard in school. But I want to ask, WHY are you putting so much money into this car to get it looking nice and driving fast, if you are trying to keep him from being stupid? Believe me, I have done my fair share of stupid crap, and I don't even want to think of what would have happened were I driving an S13 like your sons......

Alright guys-- Here are a few answers to some of the comments...The deal I did with the shop when the car was first wrecked allowed my son to use the facility inder their supervison and guidence and do much of the repair work himself. This consumedhis entire christmas vacation... much of which was spent standing in the rain stripping parts off a busted 240 I bought for $300-$400

He has done a lot of the work himself and has learned a lot about his car.The DOHC is not really any faster than the SOHC so the car is not being built up for speed...the 5 speed gear box was on the motor.. thus the swap

As for "handouts" as parents we have to make choices that we think will help us raise healthy adults I have chosen not to allow my son to more than a few hours a week as a math tutor. as a result he does not have any way to earn money-- so I am paying for most of the stuff... and I hate buying crap so I buy the good stuff...Anyway the 240 is fun for both us... I paid $50 for the car and have put a few thousand in...no big deal

I say give him another chance. But make him work for it. And also don't let him drive for a month or so, and make sure he does a lot of the wrench work. We all make mistakes, right?

Good- he spent time repairing what he broke, got to understand that he's responsible for his own actions. Also got to see guys that are good at what they do, earning good money (hopefully) even if they don't wear a tie. Earns money as a tutor? Great! It also sounds like Dad wants to play with the kid's toys. Been there, done that. Sounds like an overall winner. Good show, Dad.

Im just jealous that your kid gets everything I want, for free. Oh he has to get good grades? Pfft. I have to get good grades to keep my scholarships and stay in school. On top of full time classes I work 32 hours a week bustin my ***, saving for my own expenses. I realise I'm older than your son and that you are just trying to help him out, but it reeeaalllly just BURNS me to see people given this kinda stuff. Course, Ive told you this like 50,000 times already. Lets see those pics when you get it done!

Don't hate the player, hate the game.;) Everyone has their own personal blessings that others want. After you're a millionaire, you can throw money left and right toward providing your children with a happy life.

pics coming soon... I stopped by the shop today. Motor and transmission are out... new DOHC 5 speed ready to go in. Harness switched out.

All new Whiteline kit came today along with new moog ball joints and tie rod ends and those front shock tower mount things... seemed like a good idea to freshen that stuff up...The guys at PDM hooked us up... Thinking about one of the B&M shortshifter to replace a damaged stick shift... any one have any experience with one of those?

Hey I had my 10 th birthday yetedsterday... (Leap year ya know)

Bought myself a big craftsman tool chest loaded with tools... got some of those Gearwrench Box wrenches full size and stubbys... cool stuff...

The thread started back at the end of November when the car was wrecked. The decision was made to repair the car. This has been a process of buying used cars and motors and trannys to strip , rebuild and install. A fair amount of work was don by son to just get the car back on the road...That happened in early January.

The suspenion repair parts turned out to very worn so we started by installing the Pro Kit and AGX shocks. Car went back on the road for about six weeks. Better but really needed bushings

Back in the shop now to get new motor and transmission along with the whiteline treatment and a paint job. This work is being done now. Car is expected back around April 1 depending on how his grades hold up...

This round of work will complete the car with the exception of the following.N1- Dual exhaust-- My son has been saving up to buy this himselfVolk Wheels--- have 3 looking for the 4th Katskin leather interior--- maybe-- depends on my mood180 Tail lights-- Maybe-- depends on my mood -- but i think they look pretty cool

After these items are done I will likley make my last post and show you guys the finished car... well... they are never really finished... but it is where I will stop helping. The car will be very road worthy and reliable with virtually all worn parts replaced or upgraded along with a better than new paint job.

The project has been fun ( except for the wreck ) and I would highly recomend this as a father son activity.

Watch for the final post with pics--- Color will be Midnight Blue, or maybe Toledo Blue (BMW). But right now we are all leaning toward Midnight Blue.

Dave good to hear man. I am glad that the car is turning out so well. When you say last post do you mean the last post on the forum or just this thread? It would be a shame if you stopped posting completly.

I don't know how much I will be back after the car is done... I like the forum... but who knows, maybe I will 240sx.org is really a big sucking vortex that can't be escaped once you enter...

Check this out... The guys that did the motor swap removed the intake manifold and spent about 5 hours grinding the exterior completely smooth and then buffed it out so it almost looks chromed... They are painting the valve cover red with polished lettering... They are really triing to make the new motor look "special". I like the intake ... I doubt anyone else has done this because of the labor involved, but it really looks cool and different from the other DOHC you see out there. Pics will be comming in late march early April... Paint prep starts next week

Sounds like quite the project right now. I haven't worked on my car much with my dad, but he loves my 240. One day we are gonna buy a 280zx together and work on that. Hopefully a turbo model.
