no extra credit for AP classes... we had that talk... he has got to hit it 4.0 the hardway... so he will be adjusted to 4.5 or something...

I give better than 90% odds that he gets it done. Lets hope so... I really like working on this car with him it will be a pain to have to sell it...

personally i really don't like the whole gpa idea. I myself graduated with about a 1.6 gpa and right now i'm in college majoring in computer and electronic engineering and i'm doing great. I feel that people put too much on emphasis on highschool performance. I know i didn't do that well at all in high school but that doesn't mean i'm lazy or irresponsible. I've always had a job and i've never been fired. i know this doesn't apply to everyone but it does apply do a handful of us.:ylsuper

Since I'm 6ft and 187 lbs, and I can grab rim now, if I take that and lose weight(although I just started off season track practice too) then theoretically I should be able to almost get my head to touch rim.

Concerta was it?

He can do it...He even admitts that if puts just a little more effort in he can pull it off without killing himeself.

As for liketocrash and your 1.6 gpa let me just say I know where you are coming from... I would have had a hard time graduating high school today with the grades I got. I flunked out of college with no degree as well... at about age 20 something happened and I got smart. Really smart... Two comma smart if you know what that means... But not a day goes by that I don't wish I had that college degree from a top school. Not that it really means much in my business, it just would have been cool... My son has the brains to get into MIT if he puts in a little effort. I am not saying I want him to go there or anything... I just want him to have the option if he wants to go to a school like that if he chooses to.

Life's real education does not happen in college, it happens in the real world... College is just a great excuse to put off joining the the real world for 4 years after highschool. Grades are the shallow measure society labels on todays youth that mistakenly causes young people allow themselves to be limited by somebody elses measure of their worth. That said it is critical to recognize that system is what it is and to a degree you must succeede within the system or follow a much more difficult task of proving your value in a non traditional way.

I have fired plenty of 4.0s from my companies but have fired lots of 2.0 as well.

Remember... it's not so much about what you did as much as it is about what you will do

He will cruise the 4.0 and be back in his car in no time... He will be a better student, better appreciate his car, and know how to fix anything that goes wrong with it in the future.

I think the plan will work... He picks up the wrenches starting Saturday.

Wow, a 4.0, I'd rather die than try to make that...school is probably where I have learned the least, most of what I know I taught myself by reading, looking things up etc. I hope your son does it but I think a 4.0 with 4 AP classes is ridiculous. If I could go back to highschool and do it again I would take all the easiest classes possible and actually study a bit instead of taking honors classes and not studying once. I think I could have gotten into the top 10% that way and gone to UT like I wanted too.

I got no lower than a 3.8 my entire HS career. I took all the AP classes I could take and NEVER touched a book. BUT, when I got the college, it was a totally different ball game. The first time I studied in my entire education was after I flunked (like big fat 42%) my first test I took in college. It was really hard to have to learn how to do something when I should have been doing it for years. I got better grades than both of my parents, so they never really pushed me. I think that if I would have had some incentive, I would have actually tried. I would have had a 4.0, valdidicorian, and maybe even a free ride to school. I comend you on your foresight on your son's future and wish him luck!

all this talk about incentives to do better... its crap. There should be no better incentive in life than to do what you can to live the life you want, or close to what you want. Reward systems work to a point but then what happens when there is no immediate reward for what you do? You can't possibly assume that somehow along the way a person would learn that the reward is actually the big picture and not getting a car because you got good grades. But hey, i'm only 19 and i don't have any kids of my own so what do i know? I can only observe my surroundings. I know a lot of what i'm saying is probably just idealistic bull. So what other option do people have except to stick with what works best? So don't mind me, i'm just spouting whats on my mind. This whole discussion really makes me think. btw, do you have any before an after crash pics of the car? I'm really curious to see how far you got on the car.

project 240 resurected is underway... my son is missing a fair amount of skin on his knuckles...

here is the status

bought donor 240 for $300 stripped all suspension and installed with the ghetto steel wheels... car is drivable again

removed hood hinges and installed on project car

removed all other items of value from the car... these parts are for sale... in some cases they are free to needy 240 owners

bought DOHC motor with 5 speed. motor is being disassembled are readied for rebuild.

new agx struts and eibach springs have been assembled and will be installed Friday

He is learning a ton about his car. and things are working out.

looks as though grades in school are doing well too...time will tell

PICs coming soon.

Car is drivable...

Ahh, too late now for some input, but knowing me, (16 yr. old) I'd of course be begging my dad for me to just drive. Man, 3 Volks, and buying all of that stuff, wish my family was financially stable enough to just get me an intake. Kinda gets me depressed knowing that there is a dad out there that actually likes to tune cars and is enthusiastic about tuning a 240sx. Dont get me wrong, my dad is all for me to do so, but always comes out witht the answer, of "just wait, in a few years, you probably wont even be into car" this is coming from a 52 yr. old man who had a 69 Z28 running 11s back in the day, and he still wants a project car, not a 240 of course. Its all about money and that is something my family just doesnt have:( I have had my fair share of working on cars thanks to my families automotive background, and especially my uncle, whos 89 240sx' im driving right now. Which we or, mainly I installed the new clutch, which is was in desperate need and the transmission support, which wasnt hard. Installed new rotors and pads too. But, if I was a dad, or in your situation, I know I would be strict and say no to everything. I think your decision is just and probably would be what I would do in the same situation. But not making fun, but If I was driving with Volks, I would not be doing anything absurd with the car. I just hope he is as enthusiastic about the car as I am, been wanting a 240sx since I was in 7th grade. So I put on my O face when I actually got to drive one. Anyways, thats my input and hope all goes well.

Oh, well, I dont plan to do anything to this car for it is in my uncles name and everything, he just thought I should be the one driving it instead of his daughter for I have done some work to it and I like it more than she does. I want an RMS13 more for some reason and this car has a salvage title. I might buy it from him as a beater. Also, I wouldnt consider doing anything to the engine or performance wise since im more into suspension. Also, I would consider do an S13 SR20DET or RB25DET swap just to eat up the ignorant domestic kids at school, as for intake, I like quality stuff, so HKS comes to mind, AEM short ram also comes to mind. But I like the sound of the turbo spooling up and the BOV, but i'd rather swap instead of turboing the KA, swap wont come til im about 38 yrs. old:). Whatever is in your price range, heck, a K&N drop in filter would do fine in my books. Teenagers+power=bad things. Safety and suspension, and looks come first in my book. I would like to upgrade the brakes more than anything. BTW, sorry if I missed it, but the engine you bought, is it the KA24E or DE? (edit) nevermind, its the KA24DE.

Finances arent gonna bee too good once we get the Murano. The 240 search is gonna have to be put on hold unless I can come up with $3000-3500. Ill need the extra $500 or so for gas or what ever comes up that needs to be done on the car. Oh and an

Injen intake for the Maxima if you're in a giving mood. j/k But just the short ram with the cold air extension is like $250-300 last time I checked. Thats more $ than my parents are willing to pay for anything involving modding a car.

Werd. You seem like an A+ dad in my book. So you should expect A+ performance from your son. Keep up the good work. :D

Nope, too dumb and inexperienced to learn. He has to understand that actions have consequences, if you let it slide he learns nothing. Make him buy the car from you if he wants it but otherwise wash your hands of it. I think I am bias because being in a part of japan with a tremendous U.S. military presence i see soooo many teenagers with hopped up Silvias and skylines as their first cars. They crash them left and right and generally piss off the more experienced drivers and admittedly just as guilty street racers and drifters.

themadscientist-- you sound a bit jaded-- well he has done a lot of walking... waiting on freinds to come and get him and working on the cars in the rain... he has learned a bunch... maybe even learned how important it is to see driving as a privilage not as an entitlement.

The car will be done stock 91 DOHC with a manual transmission... hardley a hopped up silvia but as he has already proven enough power to get into trouble .

Grades are good so I figure I am even on that alone...

Pics of the Volked Eibach KYB ride will be posted this weekend
