I'd give him another chance. Everyone makes mistakes and just make sure he learns from this one. Have him pay for atleast half of the damages.

I WOULD DO WHAT HAPPENED TO ME (GRANTED I WASN'T HANDED A CAR). WHEN I WRECKED IN THE RAIN... I HAD TO PARK MY CAR AND FIX/PAY FOR EVERYTHING MYSELF. IT WAS 300 TO FIX AND IT TOOK ABOUT 4 HOURS TO REBUILD THE FRONT END. I'LL NEVER TRY TO TURN LEFT QUICKLY IN THE RAIN AGAIN... I DUNNO I HAD TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING MYSELF (CAR, INSURANCE, PARTS, ETC.) SO I HAVE A GREATER RESPECT FOR IT THAN SOMEONE WHO IS HANDED A CAR.

I say you give him the car back and tell him he can drive it when he pays to fix it. I wrecked and spun my first car so many times. I had to pay to fix everything I messed up though. Then I rolled my second vehicle on it's side being stupid. It took being in a big wreck with my friends, I wasn't the driver, to really scare me into not being a moron behind the wheel. I hope your son is not like this.

It took me spinning out once in the rain to get the hint to drive a little safer. I'd say give him another chance, but he's paying for the repairs.

Give him another chance. Everyone on this forum has tried to drift their 240 in the rain. I dang near killed myself on a Sunday morning (on the way to church) trying to drift onto the on-ramp of the interstate.

Make sure he pays for everything and does the work. Don't spoil him!

Give him a second chance but definitly get him in that course. If you were driving with your son and this happened then it could have happened to you as well even though your much more experienced things still can happen. One way to look at it is the car is rear wheel and most kids get FWD as their first car and its almost harder to adjust to a RWD car because he isn't used to the laws of phisics kickin unexpectidly. Next time he will think twice and realize what happens when you get over excited. Another thing is he probably felt to comfortable and safe with you in the car and that probably had alot to do with it. He felt like nothing could go wrong with you in the car. You just have to remember, you are his father and you were encouraging him. You should have given him your own little driving course as a beginner. And if you did then give him some more. He learned it from you dad.:D Every car I have owned was RWD. Thats all I will own. Oh yeah and a AWD. I'll definitly own an AWD. Peeeeorsche....Show him what the limits are in braking and turning and when to get into it without spinning around in an intersection just trying to make a left hand turn across the intersection. Iv'e actually seen that happen. Luckily he didn't hit anyone or anything. He will get better. If he learns at a young age how to drive responsibly without haveing to make too many mistakes than good for him. Show him photos of mashed up people in car accidents and tell him they were caused by idiots screwing off. It might make him sick to his stomach but he will remember. Im rambleing on........

you could always fix the car and drive it yourself, that's even better taunting and let him either walk, or pick him up from school driving his car while acting like a jackass in front of his peers...

I would definately have to say give the kid another chance. But like everyone said, he MUST pay for everything, or else all your gratuity will be wasted when he does something else really stupid because he has no respect for the car. I think everyone deserves a second chance, unless they are just a straight up jackass witch it doesnt sound like he is. I cant tell you how much your son will remember those nights spent working on your/his car, also those times you ride your dirtbikes and all the other little stuff you do to bond more with him. I remember almost every little detail about riding my bikes and working on them with my dad, not only did it keep me out of trouble, but also gave me such a big jump on knowing the workings of mechanical stuff its not even funny. all in all, I would have to say I dont think you will regret continuing the project, so good luck.

the Verdict--Car is being fixed Bought another 240 that has no motor but all else is perfect... we will use this as a parts car--$750Ordered a whiteline bushing kitBought used Motor and 5 speed transmission. These will be rebuilt and installed in the car--$300. plus cost of rebuild partsFound VLSD for $250. figured he could put this in so we don't run the risk of having a jacked up diff when this gets put back together .

We already had a new set of KYB AGX and Eibach prolines in the garage so those get thrown on...

I made a deal with the shop to let him do most of the labor under their supervison so he will be fixing the car himself. They will also teach him during the motor rebuild process.

The kicker--- He has to get 4.0 gpa for the semester on all his grades or I sell the car and keep the money. 3.9 and he is walking

HE is not driving anything until the car is completley repaired and the grades are in.

I will keep you psted and send some progress pics as thisngs move along...

(more editing)... He currently has zero driving privlages and that is really cramping his style with freinds and girlfreinds and stuff...

Parenting skills hard at work. The balance between making a point, getting it across and "the parent" living with the consequences. I'm sure everyone recalls the "this is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you". The Escort ruling definitely fits into that category.

Sounds like, with the help of the shop, you've come to a good "ruling" and he should learn more than just a lesson about being irresponsible.

Good call on the Ruling. Definatly the way I would have gone. It's mulitfaceted. Improved education, respect for the vehicle, and learning mechanical workings. Doesn't get any better than that.

It would be higher if I didn't get a 1.1 and a 1.3 my first 2 years. But, what ya gonna do?

I actually found myself wondering what the Emperor of Japan did in his spare time, while staring at a wall in class the other day. My ADD is really bad

i read the first two posts of the thread and then said screw it cause i'm dead tired. I just got off work a bit ago and its about 5:20 in the am where i am. So all i gotta say about the car situation is.... make him earn whatever you put into the car and don't make it easy. I've done some stupid crap and paid quite a bit for it all.. and in many ways i'm still paying. If your kid has a lot of hard work put into it then its less likely that he'll take any risks that would result in trashing the car. Or at least that's how i feel. When my friends try and get me to pull a stupid stunt or when i just feel the need to beat on the car, i hold back and try and find a nice big empty parking lot and then let loose. So at the most i'm looking at a decently expensive ticket instead of destroying the car and paying out my butt to repair it or get a new one. That's just my 2 cents. Sorry if this was all stated earlier. so now i sleep.

It's great that your son will be learning through out this entire process. I wish my dad would help me out on that. I'm sporting a 3.8 gpa and scored a 28 on the ACT's my first time. I definitely would study more for a 4.0 if i had that sort of incentive in the end.

I think you made a good call flyfishz.

4.0 is a big undertaking, what's his normal gpa?

i say give him another chance it takes somthing like this to happen for him to wake up and be like "damn i really can crash and screw things up" i know that i would fool around untill i crashed into a ditch, it didnt do any harm to my car but it made me relize that i can loose my car in a blink of an eye, needless to say i dont drift anymore.. so return the car back to stock and give it back to him, let him drive it and start building it up after he shows u that he can handle himself and his car

GPA runs between 3.4 and 3.8 without trying... he has done the 4.0 a few times... He has 4 AP classes... Applied Physics, Calculus, History and English. plus his regular classes. He can do the GPA if he doesn't screw around...He doesn't have ADD... but he does have LAZY sometimes.

If he gets it done the car will be awesome... if not... watch the classifieds cause this baby will be sold... it will be better than new we we are done...

If he gets that extra gpa point per AP class... it should be no sweat. He can really use those points to raise lower grades, especially if he makes a's in those classes.

I got myself a 3.86 last semester with only 2 a's ;)
