Try going into a turn flat out and see if the electronic "nannies" can keep you from heading off the track. These aids don't defy physics. It maximizes what is available to maximize performance based on the given inputs. But, the inputs are stil important to beaing able to maximize lap times. The GT-R just has reflexes built in to keep the balance on torque application to the rear wheels side to side and to the front wheels. It doesn't really clamps on the brakes to limit the total power to the wheels to stabilize the car as in ASCD, which is a separate feature. ASCD can be turned off on just about all cars.

Well, I haven't been fortunate enough to drive one, my insurance caps at $50K. But I have seen one in person at the warehouse. The Stage 6 guys were going to mod one of the two they were getting.

I'll bet the price is still around 6 figures though.

$30k more, 150 more HP/TQ, and only 3 seconds faster? The ZR1 is a good car, the GTR is still better though. I can't believe how many people are complaining about the driving aids that the GTR has. Have any of you people ever driven an EVO or an STI? Practically any new car is "nanny" controlled. None of you complainers had better own a post 1999 model car.

My RX-8 had ASCD. I turn it off all the time! Was planning to pull the fuse on ABS.

Right, that is exactly my point. You said it yourself "It maximizes..." not "you" or "the driver." I never said, nor implied, that the car would drive itself or keep you from wrecking it. I said or at least meant to say exactly what you said -- the car is controlling. Every review I've seen, including Top Gear, says just drive the car into a corner. If you are going to fast, the car will fix it. If you are going to slow, you can hit the gas without worry of causing a spin or other issues. I'm not saying this is bad necessarily... as I have said several times I like the Gt-r, I just don't think I would buy one (assuming I could afford it anyway) b/c I personally would prefer 1) A true manual transmission to be at least optional 2) less nannies or at least the ability to totally disable all of them. For example, I hate Dodge but I like the Viper b/c its built old-school... it didn't even get ABS until like halfway through its life. Its built to handle naturally, without the need for a ton of nannys.

If you watched the ZR1 video, and actually paid attention(yeah right fat chance from you), you'd notice the ZR-1 driver screwed up 3x during the video, and lost several seconds overall. Also, he's only got 2 wheels putting the power to the ground, vs 4, and has no nanny controls beyond ABS and mechanical limited slip.

It's more of a driver's car than this new R35 could ever hope to be.

I forgot about meeting up with some Z33 friends tonight and there was a new white R35 there at the meet. To be honest, the only thing I'm curious on, is how big these tanks are compared to any of my cars

The performance capabilities of the new GT-R are impressive, but the package that delivers it, is not to me. Too much computer, and not enough driver.

It's a shame Nissan didn't actually price this car to make a profit, instead of doing what Acura did with it's NSX, in pricing it below it's real value, to make a statement. If Dodge and Chevrolet were willing to take a loss on every Z06/ZR-1 and Viper ACR they sold, the GT-R wouldn't have a prayer in competing in bang for buck.

I'm not sure this car really cost Nissan all that much to develop.

The chassis is a tweaked Z33/V35 Platform, the engine is a tweaked VQ35HR with boost, the AWD system they already had, etc.

Somehow I don't think they're selling this thing at a loss. Maybe no profit, but if it's a loss, it can't be much of one.

It is obvious, however, that they COULD have sold it for another $40k in profit if they'd been so inclined, but the purpose of the exercise was to outdo the Z06 and base 911. The ZR-1 was *not* originally a design target.

Even though the vspec is slightly lighter and has more ponies(vs base),it's still waay underpowered and heavy compared to the ZR-1. It will still be a challenge for the vette.

It's not even a question of willingness anymore with the situation GM is in. I needed that laugh.

It may go around a track faster than some exotics, it may beat them down the quarter mile, it may deliver comparable stats at a lower cost but that is not an exotic's reason for being. The point of an exotic is exclusivity, tradition and the love poured into it by the craftsmen that build them.
Well when building the R35s engine, it is built by one person in a dust free quarentined room and the components are second to none. I feel that the craftsmen that build the R35 are more then capable and if trained could easily build a Gallardo L560P
themadscientist wrote:I see a lot of videos of the new gizmo R trying to wrest respect from the likes of Lamborghinis, Ferarris, Bugattis etc.
Well the Ferrari has the same instument setup. Ferrari and Bugatti both have the "S" setting and the "R" setting.

Also the Bugatti has an IDENTICAL launch feature to the GTR so I feel that the Ferrari and Bugatti have fallen into the same trap as the GTR
themadscientist wrote:Nissan should define a new segment of the market rather than try to crash a party they are not invited to and would never be accepted at.

end sermon, don fireproof suit
WOW, I think Lamborgihni is mad!Nissan can produce a car faster then there own for 1/4 the price. But there isnt an "Official" definition of "exotic car" but I would agree then the definition provided by the OP:Expensive/Powerful/Fast/Limited

But what makes the Lambo so limited is only the price. Which makes Lambo obligated to charged those exotic car prices although some Lambos aren't worth the MSRP

Exotic/Super/Hyper:Exotic Cars: Most Lambos, Most Zondas, Panoz (Cost usually doesnt justify its performance)

Super Cars: High end Porches, Nissan GTR, Corvette Z06, Ferrari Enzo, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Nissan R390

Hyper Cars: Ultima GTR, Ferrari FXX, Corvette ZR1, Bugatti Veyron 16.4, Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo, Koenigsegg CCX, Porsche Carerra, Pagani Zonda R, Nissan GTR Spec V?????

This whole little section is just all f**ked up, lol.

I have no idea how a Nissan R390 and an Enzo Ferrari are in the same category as a Z06.

Well based on performance really. My list was based these definitions

An exotic is a fast, powerful, good looking vechicle that is WAY over priced.

Super cars are performance based and the price tag matches performance

Hyper Cars are vehicles that barley belong driven on streets. Usually are a "streetable" versions of track only vehicles

Based on these definitions I think my list is pretty solid

My bad! I knew the diffrences in the Sentra/GTR title but didn't feel like researching. I figured people would know what I was saying...

And since we want to get picky...The OP posted "GT-R lovers reality check", the R35 doesn't carry the dash from the previous generations. So it should be GTR, but I knew what he ment

The nanny was noticeable, but still let the *** end kick out every now and then. The driver just nailed the throttle in that case, and it came back in line. I have no problem with this car being made. Will I buy one? Nope.

FYI- Dualtronic transmissions are going to take over the world, like it or not.

I would have to agree with some, the GT-R although hand crafted and uber slick, is not an exotic. This is not a bad thing thing though because I like to think that the GT-R is trying to define a newer class, as I believe TMS mentioned earlier, for high-end Japanese supercars. With the unparalleled success of the GT-R its guaranteed that other manufacturers are going to be focusing on higher-end automobiles to compete with it.

I think Nissan knows their place and I don't think they are trying to market it as an exotic. Unfortunately fanboyism, and the intarweb is a much more powerful voice than Nissan's marketing and advertising teams which has resulted in skewered views of the GT-R.

In regards to modding the GT-R, yes it will be modded eventually if it hasn't been already; what hasn't been modded these days? The bigger question is, if you owned a GT-R would you really want to mod it? When you have a vehicle like the that you really run the risk of taking away from it when you slap on aftermarket parts. I know this is very little basis for comparison but it illustrates my point; my friend with the GTFour RC is very hesitant to do any serious work to his car. Why? Because when it was made, it was one the very best pieces of equipment Toyota was putting on the street at the time. Maybe its just the side of me that REALLY doesn't want to see poorly modified GT-Rs.

I am glad this 'reality check' was posted.

That's the difference between having the nanny-mobile, and a driver's car. Kind of like the FD vs the R35 in the touge racing. One driver is on autopilot while he reads the paper, the other is fighting for his life to get the most out of his car.

Lots of chatter from the "I'd like to get on a track but instead I'll play GT4, read magazines and watch Top Gear" crowd.

To the poster who said the lack of a clutch makes the car "boring", this LOL is for you. Let's go for a ride and you tell me how "boring" it is - I guarantee you've never been in a car that fast. Period.

As regards the lack of a "proper" clutch, when anyone here can outperform the electronics in this car, let me know - I'll sponsor your racing career.

Get in one. Hit the track. THEN come back and whimper about how it's not a "driver's car", how it's "boring", and somehow less than a "supercar".

I'm no fanboi, but I recall hearing this kind of drivel from the carb-tuning hillbillies who fought EFI... the ignoramuses who couldn't let go of bias-ply tires, straight axles, leaf springs, 4-speeds, and manual brakes.

Progress, ladies. Get used to it - It's a good thing.

Progress towards separating the driver from the car with multiple levels of gizmos and processors is not the kind of progress many want. Put all that craziness in an Infiniti and I won't complain. When I think of a sports car I expect a vehicle that DEMANDS competence from the driver. The R is fast, so what, so is a Honda with a 400 shot of nitrous and likely to break almost as quick. I would expect someone who has so much vintage iron to understand why all this depersonalizing technology is killing the experience of the drive. If I want to read the Journal and sip latte at 100mph around the ring I'll drive an M. I expect an R to to demand my full attention, suffer no mistakes and reward me with a sweat-soaked adrenaline pumping experience if I am up to the challenge, not guaranteed, friggin EARNED! The gizmo R is a geek toy and that is not what a sports car should be.I know there is no going back, that is not the argument. People expect results from no effort these days. Microwave food, 8000 TV channels, sex toys that can do everything short of balance your checkbook etc. Modern man expects to have no expectations placed upon him, creamy butter without the churn, "talent" without talent; this pile of processors is the perfect vehicle for a car crowd increasingly infected with the disingenuous fake facade of the populace. A metaphorical "trophy for participation".Enjoy your hollow ride gents, enjoy the car that will do it for you while you are relegeted to damned near passenger status. Enjoy the sixteenth launch when you hear that BANG! all the idiot lights come on and you have to call the special GT-R wrecker and pay whatever rediculous amount of money that trip to the special high security tech section of the dealer demands to rebuild the "miracle machine". Enjoy your warrantee cancellation when your car tells on you too.Just remember how great you think it all is as some guy in a 30 year old Skyline burns doughnuts around your shattered dream machine laughing his *** off. The motor overhauled and putting out as much power as your 3.8 does with 1.8 less, no supercomputers to make it happen, 3 decades of use on the block, head and crank and all at a cost about the same as your pretty car's brake service. Yes R-35 owner tell me again why I should pine for this "super car".

Nissan, I beleive you have a place around back you can feel free to park this thing.
