True. I think the biggest problem with the expiration of the ban is the accessories. The flash suppressors, the large capacity clips, etc.

way I see it, if you miss with the first shot you don't need the damn thing anyway...

I still like hi cap stuff though. Flash suppressors have no effect on the gun's performance, it merely kills the muzzle flash, which a good bit of guns don't have much of to begin with.

The only thing that stupid ban did was make it harder to get them if you wanted it legally.

Oh, crimes using assualt rifles are incredibly small to begin with. Blame the media for making them bad....

I personally think the best thing to come out of this was seeing a hot news reporter holding a really sweet flat top collapsable stock M4 Style AR-15....unh!

Crimes... a bad thing? what a crazy concept!

I know what you meant

I personally think that guns need to be strictly controlled. I hate pistols, what good do they do for society? Protection? from what? another pistol?

I hate assault weapons even more...

Sure they may be fun to shoot, but if you take them away I won't get angry...

Shooting a pistol is a hobby to alot of people. Regardless if you remove the handguns from the law abiding citizens you leave an armed criminal populous. Not only that, you see an equal increase in stabbings and knife related attacks anyways. Lets face it ... a baseball bat or combat knife can be purchased by damn near anyone at alot of street corners in the US. I can do just as much damage if not MORE with those weapons than a pistol. If someone is hell bent on killing someone they will do it via any means.

Guns are not the issue, the people behind the gun is the issue. If some criminal decides he wants to kick down my door at 2 am and is packing a 9mm Glock, I should have every equal right to produce anything by anymeans necessary to protect my self and property. That includes bazookas, flamethrowers, grenades, assault rifles, bayonet, claymores, land mines, molotovs, and god knows what else that I can cook up. You can blame the guy that decided to kick down the wrong door.

I own a so-called "Assault weapon", an AK74, and honestly the only reason why I own it is because I like it.

I think I speak for a few members of this board when I say: "I'll be damned if I give up my right to own firearms. This country was built by an armed public, and has been armed for hundreds of years."

That stupid ban didnt do anything in the first place. Assault weapons (de-assaulted) were still availible durring the ban, they just couldnt feature the named accessories. PLUS, if you had to have flash suppressor and a 50 round clip, its not like there weren't a gazillion pre-ban assault rifles and large clips floating around from the 50-odd years of assault rilfle production before the ban.

Dude I work with has a 1919 A4 30 caliber machine gun (semi-automatic re-production) with 2 1000-round ammo belts he bought brand-new, from a store, 100% legally, DURRING the ban. No special licensing required. But I guess only assault rifles were banned because there are some how more dangerous than other guns

Uggg, I just cant beleive people actually think that law made a difference in the first place....

If you wanna shoot someone, you dont have to do it with a modern pistol or rifle. You could buy a crossbow with a 300-pound draw that can shoot through metal plating, and guess what, its not regulated. You could buy a black powder .45 caliber revolver OVER THE INTERNET, and guess what, its not regulated.

Mind you, I dont even own a gun, no one in my family owns a gun, and im not scarred because other people do.

Various?... you'd see the re-kindeling of the Civil War. Only this time... liberals vs. conservatives. Lemme tell you, while some liberal is mourning, I'm busy choping my way through the protestors with a chainsaw in one hand and a machete in the other. All out war, conservatives win.

I agree, the ban didn't really do ****, it was more of a pretty law just so when questioned, they could point at it and say "look! we banned assault weapons, we're trying to cut down on firearm related crime!" I would much rather have handguns illegal and have assult rifles legal than the other way around. If someone is gonna try to kill you with something of that size, it's not going to be a spur of the moment decision. The thing I don't like about handguns is that people carry them around, and it's far to easy to get pissed and use them in a situation which does not justify their use. I think you should be able to have whatever the hell you want at your house, but I'm not particulary comfortable with people walking around with concealed handguns.

Wow sheer ignorance... I have two friends in the UK that were stabbed. How many friends of yours were shot or killed with a pistol?

I'm also laughing at the fact that you think it's ok for me to get another hobby because you don't like it. Well, you might not like the fact that plenty of environmentalists out there are telling you the exact same thing about you modifying a car.

According to the local Indy Fox News channel, "The 1993 Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act" is set to expire. I guess they got the Brady Bill mixed up with the "Semiautomatic Assault Weapons Ban" (Public Law 103-322, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994). Typical American media don't do your homework and whip people up into frenzy. I would guarantee that most people in the United States have no clue as to what the "Semiautomatic Assault Weapons Ban" actually does. I have heard people here at work say it outlaws machine guns or fully automatic weapons. Some say it bans Semi Automatic Weapons. Both are wrong. It basically defined the term "Assault Weapon" by defining the characteristics of certain types of rifles. It bans the importation and manufacturing of these weapons, but not the sale or transfer (as long as they were made/imported) before the Ban. What this piece of legislation did, was make mad amounts of money for the Rifle manufacturing companies and gun shops. Once these weapons were categorized and "banned" (I use this term very lightly) people rushed right out and bought them up. You see these rifles (noticed I don't say assault weapons) at gun shows and they are perfectly legal to buy. Also, the High Capacity magazines (LCAFDs) that were "banned" are still out on the market. You can pick them up at any gun show. I guess instead of paying $30 or less for 15 round clips, you have to pay $100. The knock offs are much cheaper than this.

This country does not need retarded gun legislation, it needs Criminal Control Legislation. Here is a laughable quote from John Kerry's mouth."So, tomorrow for the first time in 10 years when a killer walks into a gun shop, when a terrorlst goes to a gun show somewhere in America, when they want to purchase an AK-47 or some other military assault weapon, they're going to hear one word: 'sure."' http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmp..._dc_6I hope you people can see how politicians play on people's fears. Terrorists are not going to go to a gun shop and buy a weapon to kill. Last time I checked, explosives and box cutters are not sold at gun shops.

240KidHere is the letter that the BATF has sent out to dealers:

September 13, 2004 OPEN LETTER TO FEDERALLY LICENSED FIREARMS IMPORTERS AND REGISTERED IMPORTERS OF U.S. MUNITIONS IMPORT LIST ARTICLES The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is committed to keeping industry members informed of statutory and regulatory developments affecting them. In furtherance of this commitment, we have prepared this open letter, which contains information about recent changes that may affect your day-to-day operations and/or long range plans. Sunset of Bans on Semiautomatic Assault Weapons and Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Devices On September 13, 1994, Congress passed the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, Public Law 103-322. Title IX, Subtitle A, Section 110105 of this Act generally made it unlawful to manufacture, transfer, and possess semiautomatic assault weapons (SAWs) and to transfer and possess large capacity ammunition feeding devices (LCAFDs). The law also required importers and manufacturers to place certain markings on SAWs and LCAFDs, designating they were for export or law enforcement/government use. Significantly, the law provided that it would expire 10 years from the date of enactment. Accordingly, effective 12:01 a.m. on September 13, 2004, the provisions of the law will cease to apply. This open letter is to advise the import community of the effect of this on importations. Importation of Semiautomatic Assault Weapons There is no longer a Federal prohibition on the manufacture, transfer and possession of SAWs. Nonsporting firearms are still prohibited from importation under 18 U.S.C. sections 922(l) and 925(d)(3). Because the vast majority of SAWs are nonsporting, they generally cannot be imported. SAWs no longer have to be marked “restricted law enforcement/government use only” or “export only.” However, if an importer has an approved Form 6 import permit for SAWs with a restriction stamp on it related to the ban, the importer should comply with the restriction because the firearms most likely are nonsporting. SAWs may be imported into a Customs Bonded Warehouse or Foreign Trade Zone because the sporting purposes test does not apply to these imports. SAWs may be temporarily imported under the provisions of 27 CFR section 478.115(d) because firearms that are temporarily imported are not required to meet the sporting purposes test. Importation of Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Devices LCAFDs are no longer prohibited from importation. However, they are still subject to the provisions of the Arms Export Control Act. Therefore an approved Form 6 import permit is still required. LCAFDs will no longer have to be marked “restricted law enforcement/government use only” or “export only” and importers no longer have to collect documentation that demonstrates imports are for government sale. However, any existing records still must be maintained for a period of 5 years. See 27 CFR section 478.40a. Moreover, importers are still required to maintain their acquisition records permanently and disposition records for 20 years. If an importer has an approved Form 6 import permit for LCAFDs with a restriction stamp on it related to the ban, the importer may import LCAFDs using the permit and disregard the restriction stamp. However, importers may apply for a new permit if they prefer. Please note: The provisions of 18 U.S.C. section 922(r) and 27 CFR 478.39 regarding assembly of nonsporting shotguns and semiautomatic rifles from imported parts still apply. All provisions of the National Firearms Act (NFA) relating to registration and transfer of machineguns, short barreled rifles, weapons made from rifles, short barreled shotguns, weapons made from shotguns, any other weapons as defined in 26 USC section 5845(e), silencers, and destructive devices still apply. USAS-12 and Striker 12/Streetsweeper shotguns are still classified as destructive devices under ATF Rulings 94-1 and 94-2 and must be possessed and transferred in accordance with the NFA. We recognize that you may have ATF correspondence and publications that contain obsolete information. For example, a July 30, 2002 open letter discussed the importation of pre-September 13, 1994 large capacity magazines. This section of the open letter no longer must be complied with. Similarly, the ATF Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide and the ATF Guidebook: Importation & Verification of Firearms, Ammunitions & Implements of War contain some information that now is incorrect. We will update these publications as soon as possible. Moreover, we will provide up-to-date information on our website: http://www.atf.gov. Maintaining open lines of communication is vital to the successful future of ATF’s partnership with the import community. The Firearms and Explosives Imports Branch is available to answer your questions about the issues addressed in this letter. You may reach us by phone at 202-927-8320 or by fax at 202-927-2697. for Audrey Stucko, Chief, Firearms and Explosives Services Division

Allen, That is a great example of the double standard this country has. It is an inalienable right for people in this country to possess firearms. This right is protected (not established) by the Constitution. What I can’t reconcile is the fact that our government has subverted the Constitution. I realize that the right to carry in public is different from the right to own, but out government has overstepped its bounds.

Um...

Its a fact that the more people you have in a smaller area there will be crime. Explain to me how they have as many people as the whole us in that small an area and they have less violent crime then us? nuff said.

I have had friends shot and killed by guns.

And fuk and eviromentalist. I can get rid of them, and I dont need a gun to do it.

Also, the mods I do to my car make up a very small percent of all of the pollution that affect the population. Everyone knows that the "conservatives" and the "lobbyists" control all of this. And I dont mean the republicans or the dems, but the rich people that control the public.

And its not that I dont like your hobby, but certain sacrifices can be made. I dont mind puttinga cat on my car if I had to, you should be able to put away the handguns and stick to a shotty.

The constitution is outdated. If things never changed, we would all be on horseback and taking a crap in the outhouse. The the law was understandable. Shotting someone was common. Now, Its wrong. If we can evolve as a people, why cant our society along with it? You do have the right to bear arms, but it doesnt state habdguns. Back then handguns were a luxury, most people had rifles. You can have all of the rifles you want.

Unfortunately, im on my way home, and I dont have a computer. So I will have to continue this on morrow. But dont forget. Things change, why cant the constitution??? It is not an Idea, but a physical thing that can evolve and grow wit the people it serves. We are not owened by the constitution, we own it. Remember this when you watch your fancy TV that was not mentioned in the constitution, or your computer that wasnt mentioned in the constitution.

lol Ronald Reagan probably could have brought America to a sensible place about guns after he got shot--not even the NRA could have fought a popular new president with a bullet in his chest if he said, "Hey, we all love guns, but lets admit the framers had in mind miltias with muskets, not urban gangs with machine pistols. And besides, I just got shot."

nice joke made i =P

Those who intend to use it for bad things will find a way to acquire these weapons whether they are legal or not. I think that licenses to carry should be more strict. So far in most states, when you come of age and go through a history check, you can get one. Instead they need to have mandatory courses and educational programs and testing before these are issued.

But really it makes no difference.

And the constitution is not outdated. Those of you who have studied it in depth would know that.

The 2 amendment is not about "shooting people". Its about your RIGHT to protect yourself and your family if you feel the need to have that protection. Its about the RIGHT to revolt if your government takes away your other RIGHTS (cough cough patriot act).

If the environmentalists had it their way, you wouldnt even OWN a car, you'de be riding an electric public bus everywhere. Same thing with the gun control people. Double standard.
