man... i dont think ive ever been so frustrated in my life! im a pretty patient guy, but i swear my hair is gonna fall off my head after that fiasco. now that my new clutch and transmission are in, my girl asked me to teach her to drive my 5 speed. i was up for it [bout time she learned how to drive poperly ;) ] but i about blew a gasket [and the new transmission] tryin to teach her. shed press the clutch AFTER jammin the shifter into gear. i got sick to my stomach, i diidnt know my car could make those noises. she really freaked out though after i yelled: for God's sake STOP!! we're gonna try again tomorrow but im a little worried... you guys ever tried??

I was happy when my girlfriend said she wanted a 5speed when she was getting a new car. I tought her the basics in a few hours but she was still rough. It was pretty funny watching her practice starting on hills and smoke the tires in her little honda del sol.

Why didn't you teach her BEFORE you put in the new clutch and transmission? That way you wouldn't care if she killed it.

My ex girlfriend would always ask me to teach her how to drive stick on my car, but I would always say no. I told her if she had a 5 speed car, I would gladly teach her, but not on my car. My car is my baby and I know the kind of he** it would be put through by teaching her to drive stick on my car. I don't usually let people, who do know how to drive stick, drive my car. Good luck with it though.

I showed my sister how to drive a stick, and it was a relatively painless procedure. I guess I got lucky.

yeah well, my girlfriend is a quick learner, and she gets what she SUPPOSED to do but hasnt quite gotten how to do it yet. and yeah i get a lot of the 'wait, im confused' thats when i bang my head on my dash board and add a few more cracks. my fav is when we're at a stop light or stop sign. she gets so nervous cuz she cant launch the car. she'll either kill it, rev the engine till it screams bloody murder or we 'low ride' thru the intersection, hoppin like a homie.

I taught a girl I was dating 6-7 month's back how to drive stickon my former car (92 eagle talon tsi awd turbo), and Oh My God..never agian..she killed it atleast 1832432 times..after she got the hang of getting moving, she couldnt switch to 2nd gear..she would press the clutch let go then shift, or shift then press the clutch..or forget to gas when letting go of the clutch..i still blame her for me having to get a clutch job shortly after because 2-3 days later i was racing and my clutch went out.. beetches!!

My thoughts exactly! I've taught 2 girls how to drive stick and they did just fine. The 240 has low end torque so its easier to learn on it IMO. I'm planning on doing an SR swap or RB or something...so I didn't care about the drivetrain. I stayed calm, they stayed calm and we can all be friends still. Also, its much harder trying to teach a girlfriend. The longer you two have been together the worse its gonna be. Don't know how to explain it really, but that's what I'm witnessed first hand.

I think girlfriends expect you to like them more than you like the car. Most other girls know that its really the other way around. :icesangel

Those are some odd stories...I taught myself to drive manual in about 20 mins one night on my best friend's old Civic. I've probly spent a grand total of an hour since then driving manual and although my launches are a bit shaky and I occasionally screech the tires a bit, I do just fine, especially once I'm going. I'm sure I could have it down pat in udner a week if I had the chance. I don't understand what's so hard...

i tried *Key word TRIED* to teach my ex how to drive stick in a '87 Camaro Iroc and whooo... hahaha she either killed the car or drag launch the car haha... was too funny for me to get mad at. But soon or later she got the hang of moving the car from a stop, so next was to shift, when i said shift to 2nd, she'll look at me and say what? what do i do now? and push in the clutch, shift in to 2nd or 4th -_-; and floor the gas b4 letting off the clutch so the rpm will just redline and she releases the clutch -_-!

yeah I tried to teach my girlfriend how in my old saturn sl1, and oh my god it's friggin impossible to stay calm.. especially when they just CANT figure it out after FOREVER of trying...

I tried to explain to her how the transmission links up with the engine and how the clutch seperates them, I figured if she understood that it'd be easier for her to grasp (that's how I learned), but nooo she just yelled at me "why are you telling me all of this technical stuff!?! Just tell me what pedals to press!!" oh man, I dont have the patience for that kinda stuff.

And no, I would NEVER try to teach someone stick in my s13.. that's just cruel (to the car, that is). I winced every time my girl bunt the clutch in the saturn, and I HATED that car! I cant even imagine the pain I'd go through watching my s13 get treated like that...

of course i thought of that but you dont understand... with my old transmission I could barely drive that thing without having gear teeth fly up thru the shifter hole. it was completely destroyed. so i didnt want her out ther on the road the moment the transmission would decide fall off my car, so i waited. but i promised her we'd try again tomorrow and i have to keep my word or she'll get mad at me and mistreat my car and ill be unhappy and this weekend will suck and i dont wanna go thru that. i just want my baby to be happy.... oh. and my girlfriend too :D

Bah, I taught my girl just fine....Of course not caring about the transmission on a Hyundai Tiburon helps....10 year waranty ownz.

The Hyundai is my daily driver so no wise cracks because it gets me where I need to go and back without a problem.

My girl wants to learn to drive stick so I told her as soon as I get enough money to buy my new racing clutch, I'll let her kill the old one... ~240 4 Life~

someone tried to teach my g/f to drive stick on a civic hatch, and she told me about it, now she wants to learn on my 240. NO! but at least i got a good reasons. i need my car to get me to school and work, so i dont need her busting my trans or crashing the car (it's possible, she nearly hit a tree cause she was looking at the shifter trying to figure out where to push it) i wish more girls drove stick... but then again, if they did, we'd be outta excuses to not teach em or let em drive our cars

I took this girl I knew out to this random road kinda far from everything so I could teach her how to drive stick in my 87 corolla. I showed her the basics at first, then we switched sides, and it took her about 15 minutes to get first gear down, then about another 15 minutes changing into 2nd. Then she suddenly pulled off to the side of the road, slammed on the brakes, then she jumped into the passenger seat where I was sitting saying something about how i "was so patient and so nice to teach her how to drive stick." Then I got some booty.

:) I don't really mind teaching girls how to drive stick ;)

I gave my girlfriend a few lessons in my car( The transmission is on its way out already so i don't care too much for it) She got a hang of it pretty quick. Only cut it once but she still jerks the car every once in a while, especially in first gear as she tends to stay in it for a while before shifting

Most of my girl friends (strictly friends) know how to drive a stick. And most of my boys do too. They won't teach me either!!!! I promised them I wouldn't screw up their transmissions. As much as I know how to drive one mechanically and by reading, the application will come natural..I wish my clutch was fixed so I start driving my own car and teach myself

you know.. the best way to learn somethin is to get your hands dirty by doing it yourself. read up on it or somthin, get under your car and fix your clutch, then you can get out there and start driving...

You know what, I would, but as much as I know about cars (text book wise) I have no mechanical knowledge about cars. I barely know how to change a tire. I have 2 Uncles who are mechanics and darn good at it. Being only 17 years old I figure I could learn how to change the oil fix stuff, but for the most part my parents have kept all of their cars including the one I drive now (moms 91 Stanza) in miticulous (sp?) condition . Plus theres no money to burn when i mess something up or hurt myself doing it..Senior dues and school $450 sucks..I feel you tho

i get ya, but at least you're readin up. i first got into cars helpin my dad restore an old thunderbird he had... things were a lot simpler then. anyway, now im 'trying' to teach my girl how to fix her car [simple stuff] and how everything generally works so she doesnt get shafted if she ever goes to a mechanic. and shes not afraid to roll her sleeves up and get dirt ;)

I think that girls driving stick is soo HOT!!! I taught myself as well in my friends '91 Civic DX that had like 160k miles on it, so he didn't care if it did blow up cuz the car was a total ****box. I got it down in like an hour after practicing in the empty parking lot of my high school. It sucked cuz I spun the tires a few times on accident and somebody called the cops on me. Thankfully the cop that came was real cool and just told me to head out. My friend taught his gf to drive it and said she was making the car "hop" for like 4 mins straight! He said she also couldnt grasp the concept of holding the clutch down to shift gears, she would tap it then jam it into 2nd, Hehe.
