Thought I'd toss up some photos of the work in progress. It's coming along just fine, gotta round up a few more parts/pieces and then it's "go time."

All the internals were balanced/weight matched and all that jazz, from crank pulley to pressure plate and everything in between.

Arias 8.8:1 .020" overbore forged slugs (So shiney!...that means "fast" right?)

K1 Technologies (AMS Turbo240) billet, forged, shotpeened, sonic tested (no joke!) rods w/ ARP 2000 rod bolts

(Next to a stock rod)

Holy crank balance, Batman!!! Look how much they had to take off that sucker!

No, really, I don't know if that's a lot to take out, but it looks like it to me. I'll bet it's substantially lighter now.

Here's a little bit of port work on the head. As we already know, there's not really much to be done here. The ports are pretty well designed from the factory. The machinist who ported this head (not the same one that did the engine work) said it's one of the best cast heads he's ever seen. He simply removed the rough casting from the ports and smoothed the edges here and there.

Intake

Exhaust

We discussed modifying the combustion chamber by removing the squish area along the valve edge areas, but decided against it. Seems like it would be more prone to detonation under low boost applications, since the charge might not be forced to the center of the piston as efficiently as in a higher boost application.

This has been documented through the use of oversized (in terms of thickness) headgaskets. It causes the squish area to open and, in the case of low boost applications, the engine is more prone to detonation/pre-ignition before reaching MBT (mean best torque).

12lb flywheel (was also balanced on the rotating assembly)

To go along with it is a ceramic 6 puck sprung hub, yada yada yada.

Well, that's all for now. Probably not very exciting for many people, but it is to me and I thought I'd like to share. Yes, I know it's still a 240 and will never make 6 second 1/4 mi passes, but it'll be fun to drive and it'll be mine. That's what matters to me.

Thank you for viewing, and we now return to our regularly scheduled program....BEEEEEEEEP......

Honestly, I can't remember and I threw the box away months ago!

I think it's a Fidanza. I'll dig around for the receipt and see what I can find.

I'm not sure what you're asking me? What power do I plan to put down?

The pistons are Arias 8.8:1 .020" and I'll be using S13 Exhaust cams.

As for power, I plan to make 400whp @ 20psi on a T3/T04E .50 trim, .63 A/R turbine housing (.76 trim turbine wheel).

It's not expensive when your dirtbike buddy is a machinist. hehe

As I said before, it's not really necessary to open up the port areas much on the DOHC. The key is to make the transitions smooth. If you open it up too much, you'll make pockets in the tract that will work against the airflow.

Beautiful.

Very similar machine work to what I just had done... I'm curious, what's the cyl wall clearance? It looks large, or is that an optical illusion?

p.s. Good job going with AMS. Awesome company.

Yea those rods are beefy and you cant really see where the rod caps seperate. I got AMS basic kit and added all ARP hardware. I finally got my engine installed this past weekend and should be firing it up this weekend.

The clearance is tighter than it looks in the photos. That's a nasty shadow from takin' photos in the garage under flourescent lights.

Not really sure what the actual clearance is, as I had this stuff done by and engine builder. The rest of the assembly I have no problem doing, but for $200 extra dollars it's worth having the pro assemble the shortblock. Besides, if something goes bad, I can yell at him. J/K. He's a very experienced builder.

And yes, AMS has been great thus far. I'll be ordering head studs this week and rockin' on with the assembly. That's all that's holdin' up the show.

Looking good! Very complete setup IMO.

How long have you been boosting the 200k mile motor?

I've boosted the engine since it had around 160k miles or so. It's been a good horse, but it's ready to hang up the saddle. She's smokin' a little more every day, and I have to really strain to keep from rompin' it every time I drive it. My wife drives it everyday, btw, so it's still VERY well mannered. Just tired.

Here's a good example of ringwear: Pulled the oil cap off the other day with it running. The cap will blow off the valve cover!

But hey, I bought the car to drive it hard and use it for all it has to offer. This next engine will be run even harder, as I'm rounding up some M/T ET Streets, brake lock, and a few other goodies for the strip. I will also be autoXing this car next year fairly regularly.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I'll post more pics after the assembly is complete and the engine is up and running.

Made a little progress over the last couple days (been way too busy to mess with the engine much). ARP head studs are in, head it torqued down, cams are installed and torqued, timing kit installed (DANG those old cam bolts were TOUGH to get out!!!), front cover cleaned up and sprayed (test fit in the photos...not bolted), front seal in there (and I didn't forget that pesky little O-ring behind the timing cover for the oil pump journal).

A few pics. Nothing amazing, just a little further along and thought I'd share.

I bought the rods from AMS. They sonic tested the rods for weak points and such. The rods came complete with bearings and ARP2000 rod bolts.

The pistons I purchased locally. They did come with chromoly rings and a set of wristpins. About the best deal going right now is through AMS, but I have an account at this local shop and purchased several items, all of which are on my account. That makes an engine build pretty convenient, since you're not hemoraging $$$ for the parts.

Here's a little progress I made on the engine over the last few days. I've been pretty sick with some stupid coughing/sneezing/choking to death and such, so I didn't do much.

I'm still awaiting the return of my valve cover, which was sent out for bead blasting, and my intake manifold, which began as a simple cleanup, but has since then morphed into a custom plenum fab project, along with some other small modifications. I'll cover those when I receive the finished product, along with photos and crap.

Here are some good daylight photos.

And here are some with the accessories, minus alternator and A/C compressor, which will be on the car...I can't stand not having A/C these days. Call me wimpy, I don't care.
