We are replacing the valve body on my 2018 Rogue. I know that it’s recommended that we use Nissans NS-3 but has anyone used Valvoline’s Max Life? NS-3 fluid is ridiculously expensive and I would really like a good alternative. Also how many quarts are needed with a VB replacement? Thank you.

Use Eneos Eco, it's almost the same color as NS3 and excellent quality stuff. I'd have 7 quarts on hand.

Thank you for the info. When I went and picked up the VB from the dealer we asked how many quarts it would need and he said 4! Good thing my husband isn’t as stupid as he is. Your 7 is right on the money. That’s exactly what it held. We ended up going with the Castrol CVT. It’s the only thing in my area that said it can be used with Nissan CVT. So far it’s running great and doesn’t look like it has to be reprogrammed. Which I’m super happy about.

Keep your receipt for the castrol as its red and Nissan will give you serious grief if there’s a warranty issue. They extended the warranty to 84k on your car. Nissans own wording is “genuine or equivelant” fluid. Castrol is equivelant so you should be fine, but guran dam T that when a teq sees red fluid they’ll instantly assume you used atf. Castrol s good fluid no doubt, just not blue as opposed to eneos.

Plus the valve body was included in the extension if your under the 84k. Submit your receipt to Nissan for reimbursement.

Good advice on both counts. :dblthumb:

The VB will still have a Parts Warranty. I'd keep the fluid receipts.

Have a cooler added since your past warranty. Should stave off any future issues. I’m at 57k and as soon as I hit 84 that’s the first thing I’m doing. Nissan claims an aftermarket cooler will void my warranty so I gotta wait. I guess they’d rather replace a 5k tranny then add a $500 cooler.

That's actually not right, although a cooler without an H-valve could void it if they could pin a wear issue on overcooling. I went to the horse's mouth about that whole issue. Of course, that doesn't mean an unscrupulous dealership couldn't try to use a cooler as an excuse and force you to make it a corporate or legal fight. So I'm not saying caution is a bad idea, just that it won't void your warranty prima facie.

You must work for a large volume dealer vstar. My local is really small, shares their tech garage and sales lot with ford. My techs a good guy, knowledgeable, but claims Nissan gives them the runaround on anything cvt. My trip through the mountains has me doubting whether or not this thing makes it to 84k. I’m almost hoping it doesn’t, but if it does I’ll install one at 84,001.

You're guy is right, but it isn't like the warranty clerk or Nissan PCC will want pictures of a cooler unless the technician doing the job points it out. He has no duty to do that unless in his opinion it contributed to the failure. So small or not, if your dealer is reputable, they can get you a tranny. Making an issue out of the cooler has to begin with them, not Nissan.
