Which is better? i guess thats a broad question but let me try and bring that down a little more specific.

CA is older and cheaper but has less hp

sr20 is newer more expensive and has more hp

correct?

but if i get a CA which i think is a stronger block and use the money I save from not buying the more expensive SR to buy a bigger turbo will it be better? And is it hard to find aftermarket turbo's for a CA? HKS, GReddy ect... I'm a little new to DET's so bare with me please.:rolleyes

pretty much, when modded, you can't go wrong with either engine,

That was nice for some stats but the thing got heated and you ended it before it got to my question.....:( I'm talking about saving money with getting a CA and using that to put a T28 or something on it which should give it more power than a stock SR right? i duno just wondering. NEED INPUT!!

BTW this will be going in a 89 fastback

well...teh stock CA turbo T25 can't be pushed very hard before it's past its efficiency. If you put a larger turbo on there, you can boost it higher,

not trying to be a ****, but I need to know how much you understand about turbo cars. You do understand that it's not necessarily the turbo you put on, but it's how high you boost the engine, and the reason you need a larger turbo is so you can boost it higher, a smaller turbo cannot support a higher boost level.

I dont have experience with turbo cars, i understand most of what I can read up on but some of the detailed parts i dont, like piping.

I'm just kinda wondering which would be more cost effective? If i save the money by buying a CA will that be a good enough save to upgrade the boosting capabilities of the CA so that it surpases a SR. By adding a larger turbo( and i know thats not just sticking on a bigger piece of equipment)

If i'm thinking about this the wrong way tell me.

1750 for a CA 2500 for a SR(redtop) that gives me $750 more to work with on the CA for upgrades. will i be able to get more hp than a SR with that much(doing whatever u suggest to gain more hp)

as a side note, if i'm short a few hundred from getting the parts to make it faster i would spend that much more.

well...first off, be ready to lay down $5500 or so either way you go. You can get some really nice parts with a CA or some lesser quality more universal parts with the SR.

Both have extreme potential, your just starting at a lower level with the CA. 180hp vs. 205hp

what is it that your trying to do? get the engine in? what form of racing? each form has it's own tuning techniques.

Your gonna need some more parts other than just the engine, I can guarantee the clutch is gonna need replaced, might as well get a new flywheel if the wallet says it's okay. Intake and complete exhaust is needed. Somethings might need replaced and some things might be missing if you get a engine set and not a clip.

I'm nota drifter, so thats out of the way...I'm just wanting a fast street racing car. multipurpose....when i decide i wana drift i'll spend the money then. I'm a ex honda guy wanting a faster car. I'm wanting to make a DET engine, sileighty. I hope thats not super noobish. I want to get more specific on my applications later.

^^well, it is super noobish, but who's counting :D

Also, there's not only drift and drag. I think that you'd have alot of fun if you got into some Auto-X or other things like that, you can actually do that with whatever car you won right now. SCCA does it, I suggest it, HIGHLY. 'cause with having a fast car, you need some sharper skills not to kill yourself.

a fast street car can be done with a CA, but if your not going to mod it much, I'd say go SR. will cost you a little more but the OE turbo's larger, and can boost out a bit more,

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the SR turbo's CAN'T bolt onto the CA, correct? therefor a S15 T28 swap is out of the question on a CA?

If i'm gona get a CA i'm gona mod it more, so which doyou think is better.. SR with very few mods (intake, exhaust, Ttimer) or a CA with $750-1000 worth of mods..not counting intake and exhaust.

s15 turbo will fit, but it's not plug and play. i'd say it's mid level difficulty. the most difficult part is taking the bolts off the turbo manifold. Beyond that, you just gotta work some lines.

I would say for someone with the amount of experience and skill that you are projecting, go sr20. The ca18 is a nice engine and a great choice, but you aren't going to find the bolt on support here in the US that the sr20 now enjoys. The sr will give you more power out of the box, and if (when) you decide to upgrade, there are a lot of well engineered, relatively low cost upgrades available to push it well beyond 300 rwhp. The ca18det doesn't have that aftermarket support here, it seems to be more of an under the radar engine. To answer your question though, a ca18det with a thousand bucks spent wisely on it would probably make about the same amount of power as a stock sr with a few bolt ones... and considering that you can get the ca for 1000 bucks cheaper than an sr, well... its a tough decision.I'm hoping to go CA if my wholesaler (who sold MY engine being held for me) gets me another CA in the next couple weeks.

the ca is a cult engine in japan. think of it this way if you want extreme horsepower go ca. if you want to brag and say hey look i got a sr and wanna mildly modded car go sr20. the ca is very very potent and likes to be pushed to the max. everyone i speak to in japan tells me crazy stories about ca's and how far they go. the average ca driving on the street is making 500 hp. its nuts. i'd say save ur money get a ca get a good COMPUTER to tune with get a nice turbo(they love bigger turbos) dont waste ur time with a t-28. and go eat up sr20's. if you want a dope ca buy mine :D

The average CA on the street is pushing about 300-400hp here in Japan, shop cars and really good private tuners have pushed the envelope to about 700hp. The CA is not as mainstream as the SR so parts are scarce, I prefer it over the SR but the SR is still a great engine. You really can't go wrong with either.

Xero, I rarely use voodoo but let me know when you timing chain snaps, I want to make sure I got the curse right.

I guess since i wana buy this engine and do a few mods and then wait a while to really mess with it i should just go SR to keep things simpler.

why would you wanna waste your money getting a sr then swapping it out later for a ca. waste of time and money. just buy a ca then up the boost and do some bolt ons and be faster then a sr. then as time goes by then do up the ca. dont waste your time whichever engine you buy stick with it. just my 2 cents

nomoremr2 I think he said since he doesn't want to get into the engine much (stick to basic bolt ons) he is going to go with the SR20.I think we told him you have to do a little more to the ca to make the same amount of power so he is saying that if he went with either engine, eventually he wants to crack into it, but right off the bat he is just gonna go with bolt ons, and since we told him the SR would make more power with just basic boltons, he is going to go with that engine.

yup exactly. I'm on a budget under 6 grand for engine + any other body kits and performance parts. so sr20 is best bet for me untill i get more hardcore tuning needs.

so the ca engine is really strong, what is the sr block? does the sr have oil squirters? the ca is sounding pretty good, especially when every yuppy and their mom is buy up sr20s.
