So Tonight I planned on tinkering on the truck. Whenever I get a nice day with no rain in sight and no work I will be cleaning and rerearranging the garage. Set it up to BEST work on motors. move a shelf and get some new ones from a NICO member.

But on to what happened earlier...

I drove it over to my old neighbor's house. It started getting dark but We weren't planning on doing much. Grabbed a flash light and he told me the timing was off. We got it idling under 1500 and tried to tune the carb. the timing was way the hell off once he explained what I was looking at. And doing it in the dark kinda helped a ton with the timing gun. It is still running odd but way better.

Tomorrow I am going to inspect the plugs again and make sure they are still fine and gapped correctly.

Oh and my manual doesn't say what the timing should be but for my 84 it should be 3*BTDC and 800rpm at idle.
Um and why don't we still have carbs on new cars? I am realizing there is like nothing involved wiring wise. I am getting wiser... ithink.

I think with renewed interest and what not I am gonna clean the truck up piece by piece and get it starting to look right.

Maybe this winter tackle welding and fix up the bed.
:woot:
I'm happy my truck drives again and the timing is better but I need to really get in there and make sure the mark I am trying to time to is right.

when adjusting the idle mix screw on the weber, make sure the linkage is on the throttle stop, that is, it is bottomed out, meaning frther that the throttle plate is completely closed. Get it running and adjust the screw for best idle that you can, and then adjust the idle SPEED screw (that moves the linkage) to get the rpm you're after. Your carb may be equipped with an idle cut solenoid. Look for a spade connector near the choke. If it has one, supply 12v switched power to the cut off solenoid. If you have one, and it's not wired up, your truck will idle weird. The fuel cut solenoid closes off fuel when you shut off the ignition to keep it from deiseling....

idle cut solenoid under my thumb in the pic....

I'll look for that. But the dizzy was all the way to one side. Also Now that I know how to use a timing gun, I think my friend gave me one in one of the boxes he put in my garage.

We all had been looking for people to hang out with and build cars we like. Well turns out S13's are the common denominator. So We are going to rebuild my stock 720 motor with the head I got rebuilt. Then we wanna take the other Z24 rebuild it and throw that aggressive CRower Cam in and put it in my project 240sx hatch.

A friend of mine decided to take my Parts 720 and maybe rebuild it. Hopefully I can get him to join this 720 forum . I think he now has a roommate that is an automotive tech and was probably wanting to build something. :mike

Happy Holidays

Gonna try and document putting my z24 back together, should be saturday/sunday. I have a gasket kit and some RTV and my manual so this should work okay.

Hopefully it won't be freezing on the weekend and it should work out.

Also check the sticky, I added a spark plug guide I found in an old book.

My view looks rather similar to yours, or rather, the absurd amount of white stuff all about. Hard to get motivated on any project when you can't feel your fingers or toes. Perhaps installing a heater in the garage would be a good beginner winter project--or perhaps I'm just getting old. =) Hope you got everything on your Nissan x-mas list.

Took the motor apart a bit tonight. Took off the water pump and had a good amount of rusty mud pour out.

Took the oil pan off and the bottom end looks great. Took off the front cover and everything looks okay, but I will see how much a timing kit is, and replace what I can while it is apart. A piece of the dizzy broke when hammering so I might have to grab the front cover off the other motor.

I'll try to recap some tips as I remember them for taking off the timing cover.

First off, make sure all 12mm bolts of the front cover are off, one of them is part of the water pump, i think.

You must remove the oil pump(4 bolts) to access the small timing cover bolt behind it.

Remove the front four oil pan bolts, I think you only need to remove three but I think getting all four out is better.

Don't hammer on the distributor block. You can break one of the tabs like we did. The front cover breaks easily so be smart about removing it, and use a rubber mallet only.

We couldn't remove the front cover without removing the oil pan. got some good leverage front the left bottom.

Leave the water neck attached, makes a good strike point for the mallet.

Remember you have to work the front cover off the alignment pins.

I don't know about you guys but my crank pulley came off fine and all the crank sprockets too, all by hand after we broke the bolt loose.

I ziptied my tensioner in place until I set the timing again or get a new tensioner. it should look like an exploded spring, just push it back in place, you will here it compress and move a small amount of oil.

Most everything was 10mm and 12mm.

I just ordered A fresh water pump and a Timing kit, that includes a new timing cover and dizzy block.

Total shipped was around $117. Not bad IMO for all that. A guess all kits for the Z24 have plastic guides. The motor currently has plastic guides, worn but still usable. I guess I am okay with that, I don't trust plastic guides in KA24e's tho.

yeah! took it out and unwind the cord a litle and it shut off, bulb is fine. So I guess I will have to track down the wiring issue.

Sounds like a break in the unwindable cord somewhere. The lamp in my Z worked great.... until I unwound it. Now it's spotty.
I'm just gonna take it apart and replace the 40 year old crispy wire with some new stuff and I'm sure it'll work again.
