ROFL, high hp car, hahaha.
I track an automatic 240sx convertible (~3000lbs & maybe 100whp). I also run mostly autox, no straight aways at all buddy. I've done some horse thief mile, but I haven't done any serious tracks yet - you can get more input from Edgar and the other guys on that stuff. My 240 will be fast, but not for a while. I'm not fast by any means, usually on the bottom percentage of racers; the only time I've been in the top 5 or so was the GReddy autox, which the majority of the drivers were you guessed it... hardparkers & canyon runners. If you've read any of my threads in the autox section, you'll see I've even run stock automatic civics & sentras w/ mismatched all-seasons; didn't do too horrible either & had a hell of a fun time.
We've all done canyons, they have their place; but straight up driving experience, I have gained the most from autox & I'm sure I'll gain even more as I get into road tracks - I feel I can say that because I've done as many types of "racing" as I can (canyon, autox, some light tracking, rallyx, etc).
Pretty much every single person (canyon runner or not) my friends & I have taken out to autocross has had overwhelmingly positive responses to it.
On the flip side of waking up at the wee hours of the morning to go to a track, some don't like waiting until the wee hours of the night to get their runs & not returning until the wee hours of the morning.
If you say you are fast @ GMR, okay, I believe you; if you timed yourself from the typical bottom fork near the bridge to the top fork going in one lane & have a time from around 6'30" - 7'xx", then awesome (I believe that was the time of the faster guys running up there iirc - it's been a while since we've timed anyone).
I think anyone who is serious about driving faster should check out autocross or open track days (shoot, that's why they made horse thief mile - for the canyon boys ), it could only make you faster.
As for looking out of a "narrow" helmet, if you've ever tracked w/ one & can't see far enough, you aren't looking far enough, most helmet don't obstruct your view @ all.
