Not all businesses are big enough to pay the money it costs to have Debit/Credit Cards POS machines and the service that goes along with them. Everyone and anyone can take a check. If you do business or not, you always have a bank.
As it has already been pointed out, writing a check keeps me out of trouble. But I guess I could join the 21st century and get an ATM card. Writing a check costs me nothing. I have a free checking account and get free checks from my bank. As others have indicated, credit card companies charge interest and banks charge ATM fees for their use.
To imitate a good man, its my 454 Casull that makes me feminine, not my Veggie Tales checks.
If checks are so much of a hassle and if businesses wouldn't loose much business if they didnt except them, then they would have stopped taking checks a long time ago. My bet is that there are more people that write checks as a form of payment than you think.
First off, I had no idea and have never seen credit card companies that charge interest (if you pay in full every month). Not to mention the devestation of not owning credit cards would have on someones credit score. So unless a person has an incredible cashflow that can be proved to the bank, avoiding credit cards is completely moronic.
I never said writing a check makes a person feminine especially since I don't believe either gender should be using checks equally. I said males don't "carry" checks around because it's a hassle without a purse. Most men despise carrying around change so there is no way an average male would carry a check book around.
As for businesses accepting checks, I already covered why a lot of businesses still do. The ones who don't, ironically, are the exact opposite of what you said. Small businesses are the ones who don't accept checks because they can't afford a bounced check not to mention a fraudulent one. Also, credit/debit card machine and operation is not nearly as much you think it is. As long as you stick with the major credit companies ie, Visa and Mastercard, there are very minimal fees involved. There are fewer and fewer places that are willing to accept checks, even travelers checks (much closer to cash).
As far as getting robbed... carrying around $50 to pay for daily expenditures is not much of a loss in case of robbery. I would rather take the chance of getting ripped of my measly $50 than have to carry around a check book and apparently as would most people. As far as keeping track of money. Most purchases under $50 are not important enough to warrant extra attention. Certain larger purchases can be taken care of through a credit card and the monthly bill is a perfectly fine way of keeping track of expenditures.
What I explained has always been how my family has done things. That is why, unlike in the movies where families dread balancing the check book, in following my standard it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.
