Although I do sense some humor in your comment, I would like to point out that every transaction that is made at every Wal-Mart store is recorded and sent to a mainframe in Bentonville. It wouldnt be any skin off their back to track (they probably already do) that I am a repeat customer and in good standing with the checks that they negotiated. I dont get hassled all of the time, just when I write a large check over $300.

Now Fry's just hassles you period for writing a check. If that it is so much of a problem, then these businesses shouldnt be taking checks as a form of payment. I dont know some businesses that already do this. My bet is, if they stopped taking paper checks they would loose business.

I guess the one thing that people arent talking about is the fact that most retailers will build the cost of any losses into the shelf price of the product. How then do they justify some of their methods to preventing loss?bud

This is the best laugh I've had all day! ROFLHAUSEN!

I guess I never really thought about it until I read this post, but then I've never had a problem with the exits at Wal Mart. I can't think of a single time that I've had that happen to me, but if it ever does I will keep walking. And anyone that tries to "clothes line" me will be having a really bad ****ing day.

The majority of my shopping gets done at Meijer, mainly because my credit union has a branch there and I don't get boned for withdrawing cash out of the ATM. It's also a very nice store, for a big box store anyway.

Interesting debate...

I think people who write checks to pay at stores are much more of hassle and waste of time than the reciept checkers. Why not just use a credit card for the large amounts and cash for the smaller ones? Seriously, I doubt very much much more than 2% of the male population even carry checks on a regular basis. It might just be me, but I find it incredibly embarrassing to even use my credit card for things under $50 let alone using a check.

As for not accepting checks as payment, I doubt the stores would lose much business at all if they changed their policy to only allow checks for amounts over $1000. I suspect the reason they take checks in the first place is to allow businesses to purchase in bulk which is quite common at places like fry's and costco.

Hell, I have no problem whipping out the debit/check card for $2 worth of items. I don't carry cash.

If some *** robs me, I can cancel the cards. It's kinda hard to cancel cash.

People can pay with any method they choose. Writing checks can be a very good way of keeping track of what you spend and where you spend it. It does not have to be difficult to accept a check. Any store of any size can set up a system that does not inconvenience the clerk or customers.

I carry a checkbook with me everyday. Does that make me feminine? Wait, no, it's the Smith&Wesson .45 that makes me feminine. It sits right next to my checkbook. Not using a credit card keeps me out of credit card trouble and I HATE paying foreign ATM fees. Better to write a check.

Point being, each one of us does what works for us.

No. It's the Hello Kitty logo on the checks that make you feminine.....And the pink faux pearl grips on your ACP.

I dont know, I think people waste more time jacking off on NICO than waiting in line behind someone writing a check. But that is just me. Not all businesses are big enough to pay the money it costs to have Debit/Credit Cards POS machines and the service that goes along with them. Everyone and anyone can take a check. If you do business or not, you always have a bank.

As it has already been pointed out, writing a check keeps me out of trouble. But I guess I could join the 21st century and get an ATM card. Writing a check costs me nothing. I have a free checking account and get free checks from my bank. As others have indicated, credit card companies charge interest and banks charge ATM fees for their use.

First off, I had no idea and have never seen credit card companies that charge interest (if you pay in full every month). Not to mention the devestation of not owning credit cards would have on someones credit score. So unless a person has an incredible cashflow that can be proved to the bank, avoiding credit cards is completely moronic.

I never said writing a check makes a person feminine especially since I don't believe either gender should be using checks equally. I said males don't "carry" checks around because it's a hassle without a purse. Most men despise carrying around change so there is no way an average male would carry a check book around.

As for businesses accepting checks, I already covered why a lot of businesses still do. The ones who don't, ironically, are the exact opposite of what you said. Small businesses are the ones who don't accept checks because they can't afford a bounced check not to mention a fraudulent one. Also, credit/debit card machine and operation is not nearly as much you think it is. As long as you stick with the major credit companies ie, Visa and Mastercard, there are very minimal fees involved. There are fewer and fewer places that are willing to accept checks, even travelers checks (much closer to cash).

As far as getting robbed... carrying around $50 to pay for daily expenditures is not much of a loss in case of robbery. I would rather take the chance of getting ripped of my measly $50 than have to carry around a check book and apparently as would most people. As far as keeping track of money. Most purchases under $50 are not important enough to warrant extra attention. Certain larger purchases can be taken care of through a credit card and the monthly bill is a perfectly fine way of keeping track of expenditures.

What I explained has always been how my family has done things. That is why, unlike in the movies where families dread balancing the check book, in following my standard it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

I guess call me moronic. You are right, if you pay them off each month you wont be charged interest. But really, most people in America carry over their credit cards from month to month paying only the minimum payment. I never advocated owning/using CC's, but I think that Credit Card Companies are the evil and share the same tactics as drug dealers. They are your friend in the beginning, until you have problems paying. Then they are your worst nightmare. But really, do we really need credit outside of a car loan and home loan? I guess I really resent the proliferation of credit and credit cards and the abuses that go along with it. Last year I went 9 months without using my credit card. Paid cash/check for everything. It was a good feeling seeing Minimum payment due $0, Balance $200. I think I am up to $400 and its time to schedule a payment.

But I guess that an ATM card would be even better. No need to balance the check book. Me and a debit card would be a really bad idea. I can buy a lot of beer with $4000 in my checking account.

^^ Maybe it's just around here then that places don't take checks. I see no check signs around here quite frequently. Maybe SoCal people just aren't very trusting.

Just wondering, where do you keep your checkbook when you are walking around? I lot of people I know find even a two-fold wallet somewhat annoying and I'm one of the most tolerant. Unless you wear a suit, I don't see how carrying a checkbook around can be remotely comfortable.

I will say I've seen hundreds of businesses in my endeavors that don't take checks. Try to pay with a personal check at any fast food restaurant and they will laugh at you. Same is starting to go for a lot of the so called "casual dining" restaurants. I rarely take checks for any of my "business" and if I'm feeling nice and I do, as with most things these days, I dont provide any service or release any product until the check clears.

A little off the topic but kinda along the same lines. The establishment I work for got a memo the other day from corporate. The memo pretty much was a profile for who writes bad checks, ie 18-25 women...and so on. I thought it was pretty screwed up.

I agree with the writer of the article, it's a pain in the *** to deal with and being treated life a thief when you aren't one is total bs. We've had to start doing credit card impressions where I work tho because some people order and then claim they didnt. So everyone that uses a credit card has to be treated like a potential thief. I do my part tho, I rarely ever take the impressions b/c "I forgot" or "It was too busy"

During the summer, it stays locked in my glove compartment. I guess it takes more a bit more planning out my day. But it keeps me out of trouble and makes me question what I spend. During the winter my check book is typically in my coat chest pocket which is zipped. I guess I have given out too much information and now need to re-think my security. bud

Hehe, I doubt anyone one here who knows who you are is going to try and steal your checks.

That method probably wouldn't work here because in SoCal even the coldest winter days doesn't require more than a thin sweater and wind breaker so no coat pockets for us.

PS. The christmas smileys crack me up.

But, ick. This guy seems to represent most, if not everything, that I currently despise about American society. Complete lack of total foresight/thought.

DUUUUDDDDDEEE. come on...stopping to get a receipt checked is the least of my worries. i don't know about anyone else, but when i get stopped to see my receipt i dont feel like im being treated like a criminal, i feel like its just a process of shopping at that particular store. and if you are in a hurry just leave then, but expect to get stopped. in the big scheme of things, getting your reciept checked isnt that big of a deal. as for feeling like you are being treated like a criminal/potential shoplifter, pretty much everyone has broken a law once in their life (copyright infringement, pirating?), so in a sense most people are criminals and have stolen before. does that mean they should follow you around the store while you shop, or carry your bags untill you're outside the door? hell no. should cops treat you like a criminal until you prove that you aren't? oh wait, they already do. but anyway, having your reciept checked is no biggie...just sit back relax and enjoy your shopping experience.

Will you keep saying that when they check your "papers" just traveling from one state to another? Oh wait. They already do in airports.

Will you say that when they start putting you in separate locations "for your protection"?

The scary part about the movie "The Minority Report" is that the government would do just what they do in the movie, if it were possible. All "in the name of protecting the public" of course.

No, the guy in your sig is a retard because if I were in that tank I would run him over and pretend I never saw him. That guy reminds me of the guy in Austin Powers. The stupid security guard that stands in front of a pavement roller yelling "stop" at the top of his lungs and ends up getting squished.

Yes, for you and your creed feel you know better and need to implement change based off what _you_ know is true to "help the common folk because they don't know any better (eg: stupid)". Anti-Govt, Anti-establishment and Anti-authority. Unless it is your views of course, then you feel justified in forced implementation for the "common good".

It's the standard hypocritical positioning I see from those who know everything.

cops are ***holes, old men at the door usually aren't, if you want something to change take it up with someone that matters.

But hey if harassing old folks at walmart is the only thing that distracts you from your boring, lonely, celibate life than by all means do it.
