Wow you guys.. This is devastating.

I'm watching a live feed from a chopper.. I just watched some people on a highway trying to drive away from the flooding water and not making it. Some people got out and tried to run.. didn't make it. This is truly horrible!!!! Prayers for Japan!

So far, nothing here. We are so far away and at an oblique angle we may be ok.

Yay! Mad lives!

This is horrible, though. I don't know where anything is in Japan, though, so I'm gonna ask. Anywhere near any of the US military bases? I got a lot of friends who transferred to Japan from where I am now. Kinda worried about them. :(

I heard they were redirecting Narita flights to Yakota which is an Air Force base near Tokyo. The military radio said Misawa, way up north, and Iwakuni, along the bottom of Kyushu south of Hiroshima, are fine. So far so good on Okinawa where a huge contingent of American bases are. I think the military people are fine, but judging by my news here mainland near the epicenter is getting really beat down hard. I think we can expect some high casualty figures. I just flew out of Osaka yesterday too.

I was prepared to suggest the cause was Kirstie Alley practicing for Dancing with the Stars, til I saw the news. wow. The subsequent tsunami's were devastating.

On a local front, 3 blocks (downhill) from my home, the Delaware River, which George Washington famously crossed nearby before the battle of Trenton, is going to have it's annual "100 yr flood" tomorrow morning when the river crests. Hopefully it won't take a bridge with it.

Have had upwards of 35 aftershocks in the last 6 hours.

No damage up here in Saitama prefecture, nor casualties.

Northern Japan is just devastated right now.

There is a raging inferno at an oil refinery, and there are reports (rumors) of a possible radioactive material leaking from a nuclear plant. Last news we heard here was that the nuclear plants were in shutdown mode but they were having problems cooling down the reactors with water systems.

We're quite prepared in case something happens in my area. I'm gonna be on survival mode for a while, so in case anyone tries to loot my a**, they are gonna find themselves in a world of hurt.

If you have contact information for him...i.e. land line or cell phone e-mail, I can try to contact him for you.

Here is a quick map.

The red circle is about where the epicenter of the quake was, measuring 8.9.

Kanagawa is the blue circle, Tokyo being the green one.
Tokyo is about 250 miles south west of the epicenter.

Kanagawa is about 50ish miles southwest of Tokyo.

By the way, CNN is saying that this quake was felt clear over in Beijing, China.
Most powerful quake recorded since the one in Sumatra in 2004.

Most powerful in Japan in 140 years. Much more than the Great Hanshin quake the leveled Kobe in 1995.

Keep the peeps in northern Japan in your thoughts.

If you have relatives over here, chances are you won't reach them by phone. Most cell networks are still down and land lines are busy as hell. If your relatives have cell e-mails, try that first.
