This sucks, Glad to hear you guys over there are OK. I know Japan has earthquakes, volcano's and other natural disasters so their version of FEMA is probably top notch, but this might be there biggest test yet.

8.9 magnitude puts this on the 10 worst earthquakes recorded since 1900.

Location Date Magnitude2
1. Chile May 22, 1960 9.5
2. Prince William Sound, Alaska March 28, 19643 9.2
3. Andreanof Islands, Aleutian Islands March 9, 1957 9.1
4. Kamchatka Nov. 4, 1952 9.0
5. Off western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia Dec. 26, 2004 9.0
6. Off the coast of Ecuador Jan. 31, 1906 8.8
7. Offshore Maule, Chile Feb. 27, 2010 8.8
8. Rat Islands, Aleutian Islands Feb. 4, 1965 8.7
9. Northern Sumatra, Indonesia March 28, 2005 8.7
10. India-China border Aug. 15, 1950 8.6

if you really believe in that mayan 2012 bs, you had better step your game up and get laid. no post-pubescent dude wants to die a virgin.
Actually, that Mayan calender thing has been proven wrong. It was actually suppose to happen awhile back. I will see if I can dig it up and post it, but yeah, no 2012 devastation thing a ma bob happening.

That's still not to say CA will NOT get hit with something HUGE next year. Seems like a lot of bad earthquakes are happening lately, and who knows when our plate will decide to collide? :ohno:

Movement of this magnatude has to induce similar corrective shifts elsewhere. I would not be surprised if there is activity all around the "ring of fire." Not the Johny Cash song.

People in Alaska should be getting prepared just in case.

So when they lose power the cooling water doesn't flow? f*** brilliant! You're telling me there isn't a coupler to a gas-powered pump? Complete dipshits. Let's hope that mistake gets corrected after they get the reactor cooled down and we don't get a meltdown.

^ Probably the amount of power it takes to cool that place is beyond what a generator could provide.

It should have been addressed. The water flow is not beyond what an average water pumping station does. I don't mean a gas-powered generator. That would be too much load. I mean gas-powered auxillary pumps. That is very possible.

To my knowledge, Yes.

I heard one report that there were generators but they failed. Do they do routine equipment testing over there like they do here? (OSHA)

According to CNN -

The International Atomic Energy Agency said Friday on its website that the quake and tsunami knocked out the reactor's off-site power source, which is used to cool down the radioactive material inside. Then, the tsunami waves disabled the backup source -- diesel generators -- and authorities were working to get these operating.

Hey Neal, I logged on here just to see if you had made a post. Glad you and the family are alright. The news stuff Ive seen so far is just unbelievable. Here's hoping a lot more people made it through ok. Back in Dec. I was planning a March trip over there, was thinking mid April lately, now we'll have to wait n see I guess. Not like it matters much, but Ebisu spring matsuri I would assume won't be happening.

I'll get in touch if I'm still heading over.

My thoughts to everyone affected by this disaster.

I hear the radiation levels outside of the power plant have gone back down.

Apparently, they have started pumping seawater into the reactor to help cool it down, too.

They said 150 aftershocks so far!?

No s***! I know at ground level a good shaker can shift my house around with authority. The idea of being up in a high building, no thanks! I'm glad I missed the experience of the 15th floor of my hotel rattling around like that.

damn this is crazy! An estimated 10,000 people missing. I hope as many people can survive this as possible.

They thing they were saying is that the people are workinf together. There are no riots, no mobs, no random killings or lootings, no shotguns out and guarding food and water; they're relatively calm and organized as the Japanese naturally are. Thats the best thing in the most desperate times.

I know if this happened in the US. pfffft forget it. It would be completely opposite, every man for themselves, Armageddon style for sure, no matter what city in the US.

Nala seriously stfu

I may be wrong, but I believe quakes have been working their way up the edge of the Pacific plate since the quake in Indonesia.

Don't forget that Chile quake not too long ago. The quake on Okinawa last year was the biggest I have felt in all the years I have lived here. The Pacific plates have been busy for sure.

You can pretty much count on the Japanese to come together and take care of business. They are not like Americans, but that is not meant to be insulting, just fact.

They are culturally and ethnically similar so no major demographic conflicts. Their culture is one that emphasises the group over the individual, and much of the affected areas are not populated with "sophisticated" city types who have moved away from traditional values. I would expect this sort of community cohesion in rural America, but not the closer you get to metropolitan areas.

I'm not even Japanese or a mainlander and I wish there was a way I could get up there and start digging for survivors; it rubs off on you. If I was stateside, however, I would be cleaning my guns and checking my perimeter defenses in anticipation of defending me and mine becase I know it would be likely to be necessary. When in Rome....
