Finally got around to starting on the floors and frame rails.

I have decided to install a frame rail that ties the front and back chassis supports together. It seems to be the product of choice for the big HP V8 modified Z's and is made by Bad Dog parts. http://www.baddogparts.com/

I have also decided to replace the floor pans at the same time and just get everything cleaned up down there. I am using the Zedd findings floor pans. http://www.datsunzparts.com/NewParts/summary.htmThey too seem to be the product of choice.

I have never attempted this before so we all should learn something.

I measured and stared at everything for two weeks, so I guess it's time to start drilling. Got my favorite 5 lb hammer too

Drilled off the seat supports using a spot weld drill.

Here is the back frame support from the Bad dog rail. Just checking the fit before I drill the floor out.

OK...all the spot welds are drilled...

time to cut the old front support...

Cam cut the corners, how appropriate...

Now to get busy on the weld nubs. Everything needs to be spotless for the welding. Who's that guy???

A little trim here and there and TA-DA!

I will get it fitting perfect tomorrow with the Bad Dog rails installed. Then we get to weld .

I had some good progress today.

Started with the Bad Dog rails.

Start with this...

Front rail was lifted in place. I had to do a bunch of cutting on the old rail because it was damaged from the car bottoming out on something.

Here it is in place. Need to keep it parallel with the other side.

Back support in position...

Now, to roll a flange on the floor pan. Had this tool left over from the 240SX build. Used it to roll the bead flanges on the intake piping.

Everything coming together.

Then... I worked on getting the front rail to fit up and tight to the front frame. This took a lot of work.

The outboard part of the floor pan still needs some trimming, but I should be able to weld this together soon.

charlie odborne pans with bad do rails, exactly what I'm planning on using

why did oyu not remove the front part fo the stock rail? I believe the bad dog rail was meant to replace the stocker completely

The front mount looked like this when I started. EWWWWWWW!

Looking from the bottom you can see it starts to taper about 10-11 inches forward of the the floor pan seam as marked with sharpie.

The new Bad Dog Rail (BDR) extends to second line (as marked).

The BDR is a simple channel and does not taper. Remove unwanted BDR.

Remove unwanted original frame.

I was removing material that was dented and not allowing the BDR from fitting up tight against the frame at the front. There is no way to extend up to the drag link support. The way I did it kept the support up against the floor and angled up to meet the drag link support. I can make new thread about the rails when they are done. I have a bunch of photo's and measurements. Pretty boring stuff, unless you are actually planning on doing it.

it's called a tc rod mount, a drag link is a steering bar that is used on cars with steering boxes in the days before rack and pinion

my point was removing more fo the stock rail would have made the bad dog fit a bit easier

I get mixed up describing stuff, switch back and forth between airplanes and cars sometimes.

I tried to leave as much material on the mount as possible. Can't hurt.

Finally got to put something together .Had a great day of welding, forgot how much fun it is to lay on my back with my hair on fire. Everything came out about as expected. Good strong welds, some look pretty good ....some look...well... . But Hey, it's my car and those are my welds! I did those, upside down and everything.

Time for a cold beer!

Tomorrow, we start on the other side.

Wow that's looking good!

Two years ago I had a full l28ET swap, it literally was every thing except the shell and 280zx-T rims. I almost had a decently clean 260z shell too. But the shell fell through and I sold the l28et stuff.

Its nice to have a local doing a project like this, it gives me inspiration!

I was welding earlier too, I had to make a downpipe for my RB20-s13. I LOVE welding. There's just something about making something from nothing, or fixing something that's not really usable.

You should have cam message me on aim, Id like to meet up with some fellow nissan nuts!

Any way GL with the build!

I didn't get as much done this weekend as I had planned. I am enjoying this and there is no need to hurry, but I will be glad when I can move on to the next step. The left pan just needs trimmed on the outboard side. The left side frame rails need trimmed.

I need to get some seam sealer and figure out the undercoating.

That's it for now...

POR-15...16 whatever it takes.

I'll just throw up a few pictures today. I got the floors and rails finished as far as welding. I saw a few places that still need some more grinding and a few holes left over that need to be filled. It's tough to jump around and try to spread out the welding, but it tried to do everything as evenly as possible. Trying not to tweek the frame and panels. I need to prep surface and apply seam sealer as well.

Pretty boring stuff and I am glad it is over.

Tomorrow I am going to install a set (left and right) of single jacking points. Should be interesting.

Some of you may have wondered why I did not install the aft, welded seat support brackets.

My new seats will be here soon and I want to make sure they fit perfect.
