That group sale is actually the reason I'm looking at the iPike and having trouble making a decision. Pretty good deal at a full $150 lower than nearly everywhere else I've called. It's also an extra $200 for the NordFrost5 ones.

I had Viking Snowtech tires on my previous car. I'm not sure how any of these tires compare. They were the first snow tires I ever owned, so I don't really know how good they were to begin with. Definitely quiet on the highway though. If I'm not really going to notice a difference between those and the iPike I'd rather save my $200.

I had NordFrost5 on my old car and honnestly, it was terrible. The car was not a AWD, but I get some problem during the winter and specialy on the ice.

The Hankook iPike's are OK. Not as good as the Nokian's especially on ice. And they are especially noisy on the highway. I drive them the full winter last year in a variety of conditions.

Would I buy Hankook again? Probably not.
I have to realize my reference tire have been the Nokian Hakkapeliitta... IMHO one of the best winter tires on the market. The Hankooks are my first 'other' brand of winter tire.

A few more more comments then:

- Deep snow performance is decent. Braking and turning is drama free and the tires work well if you don't push them.- Dry and wet road performance are good considering they are winter tires. The sidewalls are soft like most winter tires, but it doesn't feel like you are driving on a bowl of Jello. You may need a few days to adjust however.- Ice is this tire's major downfall. It has 1/2 of the siping (those small 'grooves') of Nokian's and other 'ice' tires. The tread compound may also be a factor. I've foundtraction less than the Nokian's on icy or lightly snow covered (just enough to cover the ground) roads.- Noise at less than highway speeds is fairly low. As speeds increase beyond 50mph, the tires take on a low frequency howl reminiscent of a diesel locomotive. It's not obnoxiously loud, just noticeable.- Yes, it's hard to beat the price. They are about the least expensive option for winter tires out there. I just wish they used a tread design like the other iPike tires in Hankook's lineup. It would go a long way to making this average winter tire a better performer on ice.

same here. my Gislaved Nord*Frost 5's arrived today. 215/70/16 on steel rims , nitrogen filled.Haven't put them on yet but will follow up at a later date.Based on tread depth and pattern, wet slushy weather won't be an issue.

Philipa, I guess something like this fit the Rogue nicely for snow tires?

- OEM S14 SE Wheels, 5x114.3, 16x6.5 40mm Offset full set- zerothread?id=416629

I might have found some locally that's worthwhile...

Finally got winter tires and installed (yes a little early for Van, but I'm going on vacation so it's either now or a month later)

Got the 240sx s14 alloy rims for $160 and the Arctic Claw XSi for $650, so $810 all in... not the best tires but will be sufficient for Vancouver weather and trips to ski hills

Funny thing about TPMS... winter rims has no TPMS but the TPMS warning light never came on... I guess I still had the orignials in the trunk, so that might have something to do with it. However once removed, there's still no warning light after AN HOUR's worth of driving. I was concern and called to dealer and they said to monitor till after the weekend.

Strangely, after about 2 hours, the TPMS warning light came on, and I was so happy to see it....weird

Yes, it's a bit odd.

I don't see my TPMS warning light during the winter... I cover it with a 1cm (3/8") square piece of black electrical tape.

Sometimes this kind of system is a little bit slow.It happened to me last winter when it took some time for the light to come on.

That is why I find this type of system to be a piece of [Censored] .But this is in our modern cars to answer a [even more censored] regulation .

Actually, it's a US regulation. We can thank the Ford Explorer/Firestone tire de-lamination issue for that one. TPMS sensors are not mandatory in Canada.... yet.

A more worthwhile cause is the proposal to mandate stability control (VDC) in 2011. That is far more practical/useful... I really like the VDC system used in the Rogue.

The Hankook Dynapro iPike's went back on my Rogue this week. A bit early maybe, but the Continentals were becoming dangerous to drive on. I am almost at the wear indicators after 55,000km (33,000mi).

The Hankooks have actually quieted down from what I remember. Perhaps the tire rotation I did when re-installing helped. We'll see how they perform in thier second year of use.

a hypothetical question....

OEM steel rims are 16"x6.5"... if one was to use only 2 front snow tires (not recommended) with new rims of say 16"x7"... would there be much problems with front tires slightly wider

By the way, I kinda like the bright yellow TPMS warning light there... it's something different vs all black =P

I was watching a Motoring tv segment a little while ago, and it advised if you MUST go with only 2 snow tires (4 is always recommended) that they go on the REAR wheels, regardless of front/rear wheel drive; this will give you the best stability.

NEVER mix all season tires and snow/winter tires!

I would never suggesting doing what Motoring TV recommended! Even if it is just the rear wheels.

Every tire mfg. tells you not to mix tires. Ditto for the various car mfg's, consumer advocacy groups (AAA, CAA, etc). You will create some very unpredictable handling characteristics which will likely cause you to lose control of the vehicle.

Either use snow tires on all 4 wheels or do not use them at all!

I installed my new Gislaved Nord*Frost 5's over the weekend. I ordered them online from TireTrends.com. I got 215/70/16 on steel rims which came mounted, balanced and nitrogen filled. To my surprise when unpackaging to install, they also included a set of longer (oe chrome style) lugnuts. Have to say I am impressed with TireTrends

no snow yet so I can't comment on that but for a winter tire they are very smooth and quiet.....probably quieter than the OE Contis.

A bit of interesting background info:

Gislaved Tires was founded in 1893 when brothers Carl and Wilhelm Gislow started making tires in the town of Gislaved, Sweden. Their tires came standard on Volvo's for many years. Although all season tires on modern Volvo's come from other mfg's, Volvo still recommends and sell's Gislaved snow tires. They were bought by the Continental Tire group in 1992.

Nokian was part of the larger Nokia group (of cell phone fame). They were founded in 1898 as The Finnish Rubber Works. They later became part of the Nokia Corporation in 1967. Nokia sold off their interest in Nokian tires in 2003. Their largest shareholder (~20%) is now Bridgestone. The first Hakkapeliitta snow tire was mfg'd in 1936. Nokian maintains probably the largest test facility for winter tires in the world... the 700 acre Ivalo test facility in northern Finland (Lapland).

Check that....mine were those too, it was the SJ6 he was pushing....17's.

He says they're really great tires, quiet too.

I got quoted about $1200 tax in and four new winter rims.

Not getting the TMPS gauge thingy, so I'll have the light on my dash.

Pneu Touchette on St-Laurent.

I think you are better to go with 16", less expensive and narrow tire for the winter.

Re: Narrower tires

A wider tire will have a tendency to ride up on top of the snow like a surf board on water causing a loss of traction. Narrower tires will sink and bite into the snow.

Imagine trying to use a pair of surf boards to walk across a pool of water... you can't! By simply walking across, your foot sinks into the water finding traction on the pool bottom and you are able to move across.

I know, that is why I told him I think he should get the 16" vs 17" for winter tires.

Really, I had no idea about that.

I guess I'll get a quote for the 16's than and shop for 16's.

Thanks for the advice guys

the guy is saying 16's are more expensive than 17's because they are lower profile.

Is this making sense ????

This is true, generally, lower profile = more expensive. But in this case, 16" have higher profile than 17", so 16" should be less expensive.

Be sure to go with the good 16" size -> 215/70R16
