These are all good arguments, and i respect chunki dori for actually putting some information to his argument rather than flaming or just arguing with nothing to back up his claims.

But, in case all of you didn't know, drifting is expensive, but it doesn't have to be. People drift because they dont WANT to spend money. True drifting started when a few kids in japan hopped in their ****ty FR cars and had fun on stock suspension/engine.

Drifting does not require an LSD. As I have said and as I will always say, drifting requires skill. An LSD will make drifting much easier, but is not necessary. A drift is getting your car sideways, and who cares what it looks like or how many wheels are on the ground when it happens. And as for judges who "know their ****", when drifting originated nobody had anyone grading them based on this or that, they just drifted for fun.

So, ChunkiDori, I don't know you, but I do respect you and the fact that you stand by your opinion and put some info behind your argument. But there are those who are less fortunate than you and don't have an LSD or the money to buy one, and they use what they have and they DO drift, and they have fun with it.

tie rod... if you have MONEY and want blinging a** tie rod that is strong and super quality, get jic inners with kazama outers.

pimpbut like 300 dollars at least.

me, i think i'm going to get tein inners with kazama outers... reason... tein outers are almost the exact same as stock.

MAKE SURE YOU GET ALIGNMENT IMMEDIATELY AFTER PUTTING IN TIE RODSyour toe will be off considerably.

and.. tight thing about aftermarket tie rods... TIE ROD SPACER! add more steering angle!! however. you can't have weaksauce honda style offset wheels, and you need to bang down the lips in the fenderwells (should do this anyways), and if you run a lot of caster (you probably don't), you have to bang out the front fenderwell a bit.

Alright, I have some say on what it takes to start out as well.

The first and most important modification you should complete to your 240SX (or any car) is to learn how to drive it.Get used to the car, grip it, go auto-x'ing if you have to, just make sure you understand how your car fully reacts in different situations because they will pop out at random moments and your car will spin out (hopefully not in a canyon. yikes)

The 2nd is to learn how to drift on your stock car (with open diff). It will be hard, but even if you pull 2 second drifts it is pretty amazing and you will appreciate a drift with a stock car much more. and NO, it's not impossible. It's just very hard, but very worthwhile to learn and practice on.

After getting drifting down, even if you spin out half the time, once you get the actual method down, THEN you move to MATERIAL modifications.

For me, I like how the 240 handles stock (I'm coming from a camry, which i didn't drift lol, but it's a big nice leap). I would want to get a 1.5 way clutch type LSD.Practice practice practice more with the LSD, it will be easier with this modification (it will really really help out ..duh)Make sure you keep practicing and you will see how easily it drifts with LSD.

Next, the modification possibility list can go in any direction.

But the standard mods are car maintenance (make sure u keep it in good shape, because drifting definitely gives the drivetrain/engine a good beating)

I would move on to suspension after LSD personally. Starting with small suspension bits.

-Polyurethane Subframe Spacers-Front/Rear Strut Tower bars-Battle Version Tension rods-Tie rods -Sway bars (if you want to add them)

you're going to add the above mods (and other tid bits that help alot) sooner or later, and there's no decision-making involved except for which brand to choose, so it's a good idea to start small.

Now where you're going to really have to concentrate on a decision is the choice of a spring/shock setup, coilover sleeve set up, or a pure competition/street/REAL coilover system.

Its a hard choice for some, but for some it may be a sacrifice to comfort while being a necessity to improve to others.

That's just my personal opinion and method of the chronological mod list.I may have not included everything, but you should get the main gist.

BTW, I'm not even going to get into power upgrades, because that is way too complicated. I can just say that some may want to do it early (like a CA18DET engine swap for those that have really weak and old KA24's that would break up fast with drifting), and some may have the comfort of practicing on a stock power level before moving up to power modifications (which is the best way).

I hope this clarified something for those who aren't sure of their choices.

Good luck everyone.

amatuer? do you know who ross petty is? probably not. but him and a couple of other hawaii drifters have moved up to cali because sponsors are building them cars.

and those are the kind of guys i was drifting against.

Drift Session was around before Club4AG / Drift Association was?

And of course I know who Ross Petty is. I don't know him personally, but I know a couple people who do. Honestly, I'm looking forward to seeing him drive. And you beat him? Then why aren't you in his place?

"Drifting" is being able to link turns, follow a "race" line, and maintain angle.

I dare any one of you open diff heroes to try to link a turn and have the same angle when the car goes the other way.

By this I mean having a lot of angle coming into a turn, and when the weight goes the other way, getting the same angle.

This is impossible with open diff. The weight (if it even goes the other way) will not allow you to regain that angle.....you will most likely be doing a one wheeled wonder.

I suggest many of you step up to a diff, stop one wheeled powersliding and get out there and do it.

Drifting requires controlling the car with countersteer and throttle. I'm not sure why you seem think you can't match the angle of drift in either direction(assuming the suspension cross-corner weights are not severely uneven).

Alright. Way to flame on without reading and with alot of bias.

Did I ever say I was going to drift it right away?that's not even my goal right now. 1st gripping, then maybe learn drifting with some friends.

And who said I jumped onto the drift bandwagon?I bought the car because every time I drove my friends, I loved it. It was sporty, it felt fun to drive, it was reliable, and the most important thing is that whenever I drive it the car feels comfortable and secure (unlike my dad's camry. no duh. it wuz a camry)Not for a statement or something.

People that jump into the bandwagon are people that just assume they should get the car because everybody else is getting it. That's not really defining me.

And when in my post did I say the KA is a bad motor or not good enough for drifting?I think it's important for people to start in stock KA's before stepping up to an engine swap or beefing up their KA.

Not that it's necessary to beef up the KA at all (my friends continually drift in their KA, one of them is not swapping at all unless necessary)

I myself don't think I will swap till I really need to anyways. I'm keeping the KA till it breaks.

And what do you mean recycling?I was just giving my whole idea of how it's a good idea to start (it's probably a wide-known idea anyways).1. LSD2. Suspension ****/Brakes3. Power0r nothing at all, if you like a challenge ;)

Do I need to read every single post on this thread and give credit to the posters that posted about this (now that i read the posts i see that a lot of people said similar things).

That's like saying I should give credit to Henry Ford for saying that you should change your tires when they are bald.

It was just a simple idea on modification chronology that I wanted to post.

And it's quite stereotypical of you to assume I'm juss hoppin on the bandwagon.. even worse to think I'm stupid enough to crash . LOL

What, do you think I'm going to take my car out in the 1st 2 weeks of ownership, and juss take it straight to the canyons nearby and practice drifting AND CRASH!? :pface

ahhah.. yeah right, i'm not an idiot d00d.

But go ahead, think what you want. I was just trying to give the thread-maker some help (and I see alot of other people are trying to do the same), but it looks like you're just here to show off your "I/H/E" title and brag about flaming a new NICO user or something.

Whatever man.. useless to argue with somebody anyways. I'm done with this.

it all depends on how you define drifting..

it's become subjective for each individual (in some cases).

But yeah, (as said above; see, i'm giving credit now instead of "Puking back infO":angryfire to that troll), it's gonna be a big argument we've all read too much about in this and other forums..

so.. no thanks

marshunjust because you are up against guys like ross etc., doesnt mean ****

you may compete against him but do you pose a challenge?

theres a difference between being up against someone, and going head ot head with them(challenged by them versus obliterated)

see how that works?

Ok, it's time to call BS on all the people out there that have turned this into a flame war. First, you DO NOT need LSD to drift. It defiantly helps....... a lot but you don't NEED it. Even the Drift King started out without LSD or suspension. Of course he doesn’t drift that way now because better options are available and he has the money to take advantage of it. Marshun does indeed drift with an open diff and he is as good as he says. I personally can’t wait to see him with an LSD and more power. If you don’t believe this go to the Vids section of our gallery http://www.driftfactory.com . There are 2 videos of Marshun drifting with his open diff. People have a view of drifters being arrogant and harsh because of behavior like that on this thread. The poor guy started this thing to find out what parts to get, not so a bunch of guys could get in a “mine is bigger contest”. So here is where this thread should go, back to helping the guy that started it. BTW just because someone has bought an S13 more recently that 2 years ago doesn’t give ANYONE the right to call them bandwagon. EVERYONE picked this sport up from somewhere and I’m sure many guys in JAPAN have the right to call the entire US bandwagon because they were doing it first. End of argument. Now let’s get this tread back on track.

Posersliding? Ugh, You would be surprised at some of the drifting I’ve seen first hand. I’ve noticed over time that the guys who like to talk about drifting all the time and cut others down are the same ones who blend into the crowd at the track. It’s the guys that respect the other drifters and just do their thing that always rise to the top.

BTW If you bother to watch the second vid, Marshun grabs the e-brake to brake traction for his first drift. After that, he uses weight transition to keep the drift going and doesn’t touch the e-brake again.
