Just a quick question:

How much of a difference will Honda engine with Vtec be without Vtec. I ask because I raced a Honda Hatchback I believe it was like a 1998 model with a GSR engine. I beat him with my 1990 240 with sr20 T25 turbo bossting 13-14 psi.

I beat him by 3rd gear and was a good lenght ahead Id say maybe 3-4 cars lenght.

with little traction because Im on 15s stock suspension and regular street tires.

He said his Vtec wasnt kicking in. How much of a difference will it be with Vtec kicking in??

same difference as a big set of cams. Not sure about the GSR, it may just be on the exhaust side.

vtec will make alot of a differance. even though when vtec hits a honda makes more noise than power it will make a differance. i wouldnt expect .5 seconds off the et, but it will help him.

At what speed? If you're talking about measuring a car's distance traveled, over a given time, for the duration equal to only the car's length, it wouldn't be too difficult. Figure mph, feet per second, and compare that against the car's length.

That should give you a very basic mathematical formula for figuring a car's traveled distance, in seconds, over a duration of distance equal to the car's length.

At 60mph, your car is traveling at 88feet per second.

Let's say you have a 10ft long car.

At 60mph, a 10' long car travels the distance of 10' in .114(rounded up) seconds.

These are static, 'on paper' numbers, not measuring other conditions such as drag or rolling resistance.

low oil pressure will do that to vtec IIRC.

a gsr engine in a hatch back should have kept up nicely with you.

that swap into that car hits like mid 14's easy.

vtec on honda engines makes a difference fo sho.

i also have a honda :)

If the o2 sensor, knock sensor, MAP sensor, or any other number of sensors are bad, or there is low oil pressure, the car goes into safe mode and there will be NO VTEC and it will also have a much lower redline and it will feel bogged when pushed to the limits. Also, if the engine hasn't warmed up, VTEC won't engage. Its a build in safety system so you don't really mess things up if a sensor is bad or pressure is down. So yes, a failed VTEC system will be very detrimental to the time slips in a race, but either way, you even it it was working, you'd have no problems with him.

vtec makes a huge difference. i had a hatch with a GSR motor.without vtec it's a dog. with vtec it was pretty quick. i dynoed with and without.peak hp was improved by 30~! with vtec. if he was close you should have been able to hear his changeover.

since i'm under the assumption that both car are stock.... why would that idiot think a gsr motor is better than a sr20 to start with and then use excuses to even look more like a sore loser.... if he had a type r motor, probably that's more of a race.....

Just discovered he has edelbrock cams or something like that. He supposively got his VTEC working again and wants a rematch tonight. Lets see what happens?

with you boosting 13-14 psi, assuming the obligatory exhaust/FMIC that most SR swaps include, you should still have him no problem. i'm only boosting 10psi in my coupe with 3" exhaust (no cat) and Greddy VSPL, nothing else done to the engine, and i've beaten a well modded GSR (cams/intake/exhaust/vtec controller) cams actually tuned on the dyno for max power) from a stop (almost 2 car lengths) and a roll on race by a car and a half.

i dont understand the hate for honda's.

sure people make honda's look ridiculous. but its not the cars fault.

i almost got the money to put my h22 into my hatchback civic. mutang 5.0's aren't any threat with that in there.

are stock ever really, stock 5.0's suck, pure and simple.

watch out for real Ford Guys though, you'll routinely see street legal 10 and 11 sec Fox body mustangs at drag strips...

pretty bad to see one going down the quarter on what looks like 3 wheels due to the car twisting.

30 hp?!? I'd like to see the dyno chart. I'm not calling you a liar, but that's incredibly impressive for a system that acts like an aggressively ground set of cams.

I don't see how VTEC adds 30 hp if essentially all that it is is a really aggressive street-cam. An aggressive street cam for the KA (the stock ones are unbelievably mild) will add about 11 whp.

Does anyone know the specs of the camshafts (duration, lift, etc) of some of those honda engines before and after vtec is engaged?

I for one am not impressed at all by VTEC, and I HATE HATE HATE people who treat VTEC like it's a turbocharger--because it's NOTHING alike. (Actually, i was reading a rice-magazine at barnes and nobel the other day and they were saying how VTEC has reached "legendary" status among tuners for its "near-turbo top-end power." What a load of crap).

My mom has a V6 VTEC accord engine, and when vtec "kicks" in, the only thing I notice is the obnoxious sound--doesn't push you back in your seat at all, really unimpressive and uninspiring.

Anyway--yeah, you won legitimately. Too bad if his VTEC wasn't working, that's his fault.

Good points, Mr1der. I've piloted an 11 second fox body around town before. Very intense driving experience. Like all cars, it takes money and dedicated owners to make a bulletproof 11sec Foxbody, but they're out there, and usually driven by somewhat older guys who have no qualms about catching a speeding ticket(and have no problem paying for it) if it means smoking some nay-sayer on the street. Loads of fun!

I got a LS/VTEC eg hatch(b18c5 head) and the head helped tremendously. Id say it gained a good 30 crank HP. But I also went LS/VTEC. If he just had a GSR motor in his eg and for some reason he set his V-AFC to not engage VTEC(for some odd reason) then it would have just been like racing a LS integra(only mass lighter). If he sets his V-afc good theres a good chance he may take you(depending on from a roll/stop and what supporting mods you have done to the SR, and what suspension both of you guys are running) *Note This is also assuming that guys motor is stock, you gotta remember dude your car has mass more weight to push then his tiny eg hatch

Ps... I am by NO means a Vtec fan boy I would have never went ls/vtec if I hadn't gotten a damn good deal on the head.
