Under Carriage Rust 2008 Rogue

I recently took my 2008 Rogue in to repair the CV boot. My mechanic was appalled at the amount of
rust under the car. I told him about a constant rattling when warming my car in the morning. He
stated the muffler shield is completely rusted and was really surprised given the car is only 7+ years old.

I live in California and do go to the mountains in winter 2-3 times a year and park outside (do
not have a garage), but this seems alarming to me at just 7 years. Anyone have any undercarriage
rust issues in the first generation of Rogue?. I am not sure what to do. I will get some pics when
I get a chance but wanted to get some feedback.
