Just got this month's SCC and I read the article about the Turbo Cavalier. It's not out quite yet but what I've read this is what's been happening with it.

Engine: 2.2l ecotec with 8psi with compression ration of 8.6:1. 321 stainless steel exhaust manifold and stainless 2.5-inch exhaust system with borla boomer and a fel-pro 36-lb/hr fuel injectors. A 60mm throttle body and intake manifold. Garret T28 turbo and a spearco FMIC. Suspension: Airbag system from Air ride technologies for "...chosen so the car can be dropped easily for display." 13-inch slotted front rotors with polished four-piston calipers and 12-inch rear rotors with polished single piston calipers. Rcaing Hart M5 wheels, 19x8 with Toyo Proxes Fz4 (235/35-19).

It boasts an amazing..... 182 hp at 6000rpm, only 57.5 more hp than the stock ecotec and 176 lb-ft of torque at 5500rpms. 0-60 at 7.5 seconds and 15.4 on the 1/4 mile at 91.4 mph. Weighs in at a hefty 2895lbs.

My opinion...... *yawn*..... When does the Elise come out?

why buy a 240+SR for under $6000 when you could spend twice as much and go twice as slow with a TURBO CAVALIER!!!!!

w/ 16" rims and normal springs/struts it'd be much faster i'd think...that and maybe some BAWLZ

OH! And maybe if it was actually a quality car, it'd be faster too. And maybe if they stripped it out and put stickers on it seeing as it comes STOCK with Altezza's it'd be a whole lot faster.

I hate cavaliers. Well, no I hate the people that try to make their cavalier something worth driving, which obviously failed miserably.

I found the old turbo cavs from the 80's to be amusing, it was actually one of the quicker cars for the time

That's not very nice to say. Many teens graciously receive their cavalier(the former family car) and try to do things to it because thats all they've got. Are you gonna bash them because thats all that their family can provide for them? Or are you going to exalt them for happily working with what they have?

Seriously though, didn't you guys know that production for the cavalier ended with the 2004 model? They're replacing it with the Cobalt. This cavalier is just a little project that GM is doing for publicity and eye candy. But I will agree that GM doesn't really do a very good job in helping the j-body community with modding their cars. I'll admit this much: Suped up j-bodies look much hotter than suped up 240sx's... Take a look at the cars on http://www.j-body.org and you'll see why.....

Oh ya... GM has a 7 second cavalier that they're using to promote aftermarket for their 2.2 ecotec engine. If you have the money, you can buy every part that they use on their car directly from GM...

i too hate the cav. this guy at my school has one. it used to be his mom, and yes he was given it. but this kid drives the thing around like its fast. hes always speeding, and reving the piss outta it and its a 4dr auto. i cant wait till he wrecks the thing acting like a baddass. and i think they look like crap, all "souped"/riced out. i have a picture of a sunfire convt. with a body kit and aftermarket hood. looks like pure ****. the 240 kicks its *** any day. and that engine isnt quite stock. its an aluminum head and block, and has some major work done to it. sure you can buy the stuff they put on it, but will be no where near the car they have. plus the car itself is nothing close to a cav. it shares the body shape, and thats about all thats left. eh, enough ranting.

The Cavalier is an average economy car. Its sort of crude, but it can be plenty fun to drive with a 5-speed. But its crude.

I'm going to ask them why they are wasting their time making their ugly car even uglier and more rediculous than it was when they started. Granted, it is all "wasting" money no matter what car you do it to, but trying to make a domestic econobox pos a respectable car isn't goin to happen by jumping on the neon light and cutsprings bandwagon

Even with a turbo, its still a cavalier. Just like the turbo neon is still an ugly neon, even if it is fast.

Is a WRX just an Impreza, Subaru's economy car? Subaru and Dodge did some cool stuff with what started out as fairly uninspiring platforms. I'd buy an SRT-4 or a WRX in a second. I've been in both cars and liked them both for different reasons.

I don't know if GM can come up with a viable sport compact car, but I'd love to see them give it a shot.

I'm interested in seeing what Saturn's Redline can do. I don't care if it's a Saturn. If it can perform, it can perform. As long as auto manufacturers aren't slapping a big *** wing on an economy car and calling it a performance car, I don't see any reason not love the whole trend.

More horsepower for everyone! Gimme another heaping portion of forced induction!

Thought: Do the Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and BMW guys say "it's only a Nissan"? ;)

look at what the sentra evolved into

the original cavalier and a plethora of turbo dodges may very well have led to the current batch of sport compacts

The turbo omni is still a disturbing car despite not being a super performer out of the box...

I thought as much. That truly sucks. Is there anyone who can bust on the Ferrari and Lambo guys? ;)

BTW Smith, I like your icon thingy (can't remember what they're called right now). I'm hoping to buy a SIG in the next fews months. Right now car budget > gun budget by necessity (my brakes are gonna get me killed if I don't fix 'em soon).

I don't like cavs either. cuz I got smoked by one last month. I thought the stock cavs hit 15.4's already. I had a 250 pound passenger though! but still no excuses.

^^ but I have to give credit when it's due--that 7 sec drag cav and sunfire use the stock 2.2L ecotec block (resleeved) and head (both massaged of course!!) dry sump , balance shafts removed , oil passages sealed up etc. Destroked to 2.0L crower rods and JE pistons ( 10.4 to 1 CR btw) 6061 Aluminum intake manifold. Stock bearings , billet crank. Crower cams , msd etc. The turbo is a GT 80-R-.96 3.5 V-band ceramic ball- bearing (110lbs @ 30psi). Everything (has part numbers!!)can be ordered from GM Performance Parts either preassemblied or parted out! $20,000+(est.)

good for 925hp at 8500599tq at 7500redline at 9700

I hate cavs even more now! I wish nissan had that much factory support! But no FR ?? aahhh junk!!! lol!

HERESY!

you must of seen only ugly 240's.

and j-body's and neon's will always have that stigma, no matter how fast they get. shame on GM for teasing j-body owners.. :evilhaha

I personally wouldn't mind having a 3rd gen Z24 with a 5 speed.

i think it's a (semi) neat idea. i agree w/the comment that at least gm's trying not to continuously fall behind the compact car power curve. that is, if they're serious about making this thing, or at least, something derived from it. although, i will say that the power and performance specs are subpar, to say the least. i mean, damn, an svt focus (n/a) puts out nearly as much power. there doesn't appear to be much emphasis on the suspension (pity), the weight could be better, and for God's sake, higher redline anyone? oh well, regardless of how small and misguided, a step in the right direction nonetheless...
