The only thing I can find is nakamichi..

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com...13364

I like this because it looks somewhat OEM.. I also like it because nakamichi makes very good sounding products.. The problem is, it isn't very feature rich.. I know it will sound & look great though.. Another nice thing it has amber to match the interior lighting of the Q.

I want something of the highest quality, but that doesn't look like it belongs in a slammed civic..

Nakamichi is the only brand I can find that looks like this..

Any suggestions?

I am waiting for a double din XM-satelite head unit to come out. None of the double din units available have the XM option yet.

My reccomendation is to go with a suitable Blaupunkt head unit. Very OEMish styling.

I am going to keep my stock system until I know I have the cash for a carputer setup. Ohhh the possibilities with carputers... endless!

If what I think corey is talking about, is correct, it's a newer version of all those literally hacked pc car things back in the day...

Hopefulyl they are slimmer/more functional and sexier then what I remember.

When mp3s were getting big back in the late 90s early 2ks people were literally jerry rigging small pcs in their cars for use..

Hmm blapunkt.. didn't think about that. thanks corecy, checking out now..

RSI.. I am definetely going with an XM receiver of some sort.. If it didnt come built into the unit, I was thinking of getting a seperate XM unit.. you know what im talking about? It's an XM unit but it looks like it would take up a full slot underneath a normal unit..

There's a link in the Car Audio Forum, that I started when I was looking for a nice Double DIN unit. Here's an importer I found, they offer non-US head units. They require an adapter to adjust the FM frequency range for US stations.

I like the both of these, but they aren't offered in the states :(.

Are you sure the nakamichi isn't offered in the states?

It is listed on their USA Page...

None of these Nakamichi head units, play mp3s...

Argh

It seems as though only cheaper head units play mp3s..

I want sattelite radio/mp3/cd.. I DON'T want some real aftermarket extreme looking head unit..

Am I screwed? I guess I could get the nakamichi and hook up the sat through the aux..

Although I'm still shafted on MP3.

It may be now, but according to the previous page to that one, it says it's not available in the USA, maybe that's changed??

A carputer is basically a computer in your car. You can create your own low wattage carputer or you can buy a carputer pre-made such as from Xenarc Direct. You can basically mount the TFT LCD screen (s)anywhere in the cabin, have the carputer in the trunk and function everything through the touchscreen and/or mini keyboard (that'll fit in your glove compartment). There are custom GUIs available through different media engines wherein you can control the complete sound system, GPS, etc.

My dream is to mount an LCD to a couple tiny electric pistons which would have it re-tract against the dash while the car is off, and when turned on the LCD would extend out towards the driver making playing MP3s, DVDs or reading the GPS a snap. It is also possible to say mount a Hi-Res infrared camera to the front of your car and use it as night vision while the weather is bad. You can also add backup cameras, sensors, etc. With the consult port open and linked to the carputer it may even be possible to control airconditioning, heating, etc. which would free up the main portion of the center dash (for a bigger LCD of course :pface ).

Sooo many possibilities with computers and cars... you reach the end of the road when you reach the end of your imagination.

not that it matters, since I don't use or any have any plans to utilize MD..

What do you guys think would be some good locations for tweeters in the first gen Q..

Do you think it would be beneficial to put some where the 94+ have them (pillars)

Or would another location be beneficial..

I am going to completely rip out the bose system, and am looking for suggestions on what to go with

I would like to replace all speakers of course, and put some highs in somewhere.

I have the portable thing...I keep forgetting it when I need it...take it out the everytime to use at home and vice versa. I want a fixed, built in unit...otherwise I will just buy another receiver.

Could this thing be used as a fixed built in type unit?

Tweeters in the pillars would help raise the soundstage and I think the 94+ pillars could fit. I think someone did it ... can't remember who??

I forgot these all had MD players in them, I'm a big fan of MD's and wanted to add one into my system. I ended up just adding a Bose HU with a CD player. The Alpine does play MP3's.

I COMPLETELY agree with the "No Disco in my dash" concept. Let me look around and see what I can find ...

Nakamichi are so nice.. I've seen a few in person, the quality is real good. The feel of the buttons everything is top notch. I guess they are styled very conservatively, because they are primarily sold in Japan.. I dunno though.. it seems to fit with Japanese standards..

These clarions don't look to bad

Something like this

I still haven't found anything that looks as clean as the nakamichi, but the hunt hasn't ended yet!

I really like the way the 94+ tweeters look. Even if I didn't use the bose units, I could still gnab the grills and add them to the pillars, and use some aftermarket tweeters?

Hmm, these clarion units are sirius ready.. Darn, I like XM

I have that Nak unit, the sound processing in amazing (24b d/a) - I'm still running it through the Bose speakers/amps and it brought out so much more detail than the Clarion/Bose unit. I compared it to Alpine and Eclipse units similarly priced and found the sound much better (as to my liking - more detailed and crisp).

If you want more features in a great sounding fairly low key HU, I'd go Eclipse. Eclipse was a very close second in my book. Alpine (7995) was a distant third.

As to tweeter locations I'd go with the A-pillars or sail panels in that order depending on how much custom work you want to do.

CD/WMA/Mp3 built in..

Leaves a din for the active suspension controller as well... I'm not sure about sirius though. I currently use XM. I think you can use one account for up to 4? different receivers.. Or am I wrong on this?

The Nak is the best looking unit I've found IMO..

I would have to add a bunch of other stuff using AUX or something else, if I want the other features like sat radio/mp3, is the only problem..

I like this clarion

Here's a couple Pioneer CD MP3 units, a litte flashy, but not too bad

Double DIN

Single DIN to allow for your Active controller

The Pioneer offer XM Satellite for their head units.

Not bad... I guess if you want all the features, you just have to accept a little disco flash..

With a single din head unit, and a 1/2 din active suspension controller in the dash, I would still have 1/2 din left.. Is this enough to hold a cd or something? Could I have a single cd holder fabricated to take up the remaining space?

Corey,

Those are some interesting ideas you had. It would be cool to have a president style dash.. Just an LCD taking up all the space...

Carputer Thread with pics.

I think there are 1/2 DIN storage bins available. Here's an example from Scosche, just for an idea.

Rex,

That would be real nice on the Q. I like the install of the LCD and the cd rom drive.. very very clean..

I don't have the time/patience/skills to do any installing myself.. If I knew someone real good local who would be willing to take ona project for the sheer fun of it, I would love to do something like this...

He's got everything he needs in this setup

GPSMP3CD

Touch screen..

beautiful.

Here's a guy in the Car Audio Forum, who's going to do it himself, maybe he'll do a How To thread?

All Nakamichi decks ABSOLUTELY ROCK. The sound quality is absolutely amazing. Theyre incredibly easy to use and look clean.

After some corporate restructuring, their US distribution is severely limited to almost nothing.
