...and it’s driving me nuts.

What is the original purpose of tipping? It’s to supplement the income of those nice ladies that bring us food because they got paid in sexual harassments by the cooks. Also, the accepted tip was 10%. Now, there is a tip jar EVERYWHERE including fancy coffee shops where the employee barely looks at you between sending texts on their phone and gets $10/hr and expects 20%!? Why are we tipping everywhere for everything? Curbside service and they want 15%. No one’s waiting on me, refilling drinks, asking how everything is twenty times.

Bottom line, If you’re getting paid minimum wage or more, I’m not giving you a tip - with the one exception being a bar tender, because the tip is just a bribe for more alcohol.

I would never tip the bartender. Alcohol prices are ridiculous.

In comparison, that's the same as other peoples' tips.

But on topic, 10% is a low tip for a server. 15% is more in line with a decent tip, and 20% is a good tip. While the minimum wage has gone up for everyone, servers are still locked to $2.13/hr, so with how the economy has been, they really require those tips to get by.

I agree that everyone is expecting a tip now a days and its really annoying. At domino's I pull through the window and pick up my pizza and there's a guy there sometimes who gives me a glaring look when I don't put any extra $$ on the tip line. But in the same token, my fiance is a server at a restaurant and I think she and every other server working their butts off to make you happy and get you all your freaking extras, and deal with all the bull crap and complaining, while keeping a smile on their face. They deserve to be tipped and to be tipped well. I've never understood why people gip them on a tip, especially when its not their fault that the cooks mess stuff up, or that someone didn't like what they ordered

At restaurants in the States (I'm living in Oz ATM, no tipping :gapteeth ) if my food is not cooked to my standards I always ask if they tipshare, it greatly affects my tip, also I always let them know that their cook f*** up and then try to convince them to take a cash tip while putting something emasily or nothing on the card (as far as a tip) One of my ex's was a waitress/bartender, we actually met at the bar where she worked and I frequented. With a bar it really is all about the tip especially if you drink top shelf stuff and not cheap a** wells on cheap a** wells night. Tipping a bartender and being nice will almost always come back to your benefit, and on a real busy night you could actually end up paying for a lot less drinks than you consume because they will simply "get sidetracked & forget" to enter a drink or two for you between pouring for others. I will say this also, service here in Aus is absolute s***, no tipping culture means no reason to try hard to please the customer. Service is s*** in general here but food service especially. Basically, if you want good service you gotta pay to play, if you tip like an old jew (chill, I'm jewish I'm allowed to make these jokes) then don't expect to be treated like that baller throwin hundys at the table across the place.

P.S. if its a drivethrough, sonic, takeout, or pickup pizza: You can blow me, you provided me with a product, NOT a service NO TIP FOR YOU!

My mom used to wait tables and she told me stories that really pissed me off. Customers would leave her a handful of change and throw it into their water glass or put some bills on their plates and smother them in ketchup. She had people walk out the door without paying when she'd go into the kitchen for something and she'd have to pay for their meal. She also said that if she had a dollar for every time some drunk or handsy old man pinched her butt, she could have retired well before she turned 30. It's a thankless profession. Wait staff are on their feet all night, many of them busting their a** without a break. I don't tip at Domino's, Starbucks, or Subway but I do tip well if I'm in a sit-down restaurant.

I think until you work as a waiter or bartender or valet, you won't understand why the tips are so important. I agree tip jars behind the counters of coffee shops and the like seem wrong, but there's no law that says you MUST put in a tip if you see one of those jars. But you are a worm if you go to an establishment, like a restaurant with wait service that includes tipping and skip the tipping.

I know there are some bad waiters/waittresses out there that don't deserve tips but it's wrong to condemn them all based on a few bad apples. If you have that big an issue tipping, then don't go to places that have it.

<tips well.

I'd tip extra to AVOID this. Easily the number one irritant about restaurant dining. If you have to ask me twenty times to know whether I'm enjoying my meal, you suck at your job. Also, I came to a sit-down establishment with private tables FOR PRIVACY. If I wanted someone pestering me every five minutes I'd have taken my lunch to an elementary school cafeteria. I WILL TELL YOU when I need something. I appreciate a server who is prompt, keeps my drinks filled, and is around if I need something. But don't ask me how the same slab of halibut tastes 5 different times.

I hate how we've turned the tip into a way for the customer to supplement the income of a server. A tip should be a reward for excellent service, a way to thank a server who has gone above and beyond what is required of them. Servers should just get paid minimum wage to begin with.

Pooring me a coke is not worth tipping you an extra buck. If I asked you to make something that took an incredible amount of time and cost you multiple lucrative sales then maybe.

I always overtip, especially at a bar or place I frequent. I want to build a relationship with the establishment and also brighten days because I know that they probably have to deal with a significant amount of ***holes.

How is that you always resort to childish name calling on here? I'm starting to think your mom spent to much time at the bar when you were in the womb. Back to ignoring you like I do in the politics section. :gapteeth:

the one crying about childish insults, results to childish "yo mama" insults..... :tisk: how hypocritical....
and for your info, there was nothing childish in my post. you clearly stated your stingy or you can call it "frugal" with your money. and i simply stated that coming from someone who advocated 'spreading the wealth around', that seems hypocritical of you to be stingy. nothing childish there, rather adult like actually.

and regarding your immature post about my mother, well my mother and father spent their lives working their butts off to make it in this country, when we arrived in '89. they didnt have time nor the money to sit around in bars. but nice try buddy. keep making insults about members mothers ...... :squint:
(moving right along)

your right, its your prerogative where and why you tip. and its my prerogative to call you out on it if you come across as a cheap a**. thats called EQUAL RIGHTS.
see i know you love "equal rights"! but only like it when when its in your favor, right? but equal rights works both ways. that means you have a right to say something, and so do i. see how that whole EQUAL thing works? funny insnt it? not what you always thought equal rights means huh? you learned something new today. :rotfl

this post really touched me, as my parents also worked menial jobs when they just came here. i feel your pain bex, and thats why when i hear people not tipping the bartenders because the alcohol prices are ridiculous - it really pisses me off. LIKE BARTENDER SET THE DRINK PRICES??? if someone cant afford the drinks/food - stay home. but damn sure dont jip those you serve you.

Ouch. @ImStricken, there are two shift keys on the keyboard.

Went to the bar with my wife Friday. In this bar they have 2 different "bars" and multiple bar tenders. At one point (probably around 9-9:30pm) three of them were on their cell phones. I wouldn't have gave them a tip, but they gave me a free drink - likely accidently, but still a free drink, so I gave my tip equal to the price of that free drink.

It really bugs me when someone is on the phone and also on the clock when work needs to be done. And if you're in a service business, even if there's no one at your bar, you need to look professional and wipe the counter top down, or turn bottles so they're all facing the same direction, etc... Make your bar look nice and be ready for a person to order a drink!

I pay extra for good service. It doesn't really matter the profession. If I perceive someone going the extra mile, I pay them for it. There are so many bags-of-worthless-slag in the world today, that I find it refreshing to see some people still working hard. There are far too many people that think they're "entitled". If you stand at a register and take my money for an ice coffee, you had better stir up the fvcking sugar/flavoring sludge sitting in the bottom of the cup. Otherwise...f*** YOU...you get nothing you lazy monday.

If you think tipping is ridiculous, go to VEGAS.. You're supposed to tip the cab driver, the guy at the hotel that gets the cab for you, and so on. I have no problems tipping people nicely at a restaraunt or bar. I worked along side a bunch of waiters and bar tenders at the country club I worked at years ago, and getting $2/hour is not gonna make ends meet.. In order fior them to make a decent living, they not only had to be busy but they had to do a good job in hoping to get tips.

However, out in Vegas I think it's absolutely stupid to the guy at the entrace that whistles for a cab. It's a rigged system because you have to go through the valet right there, or you have to walk out to the street which can be a long walk, not fun if you have a bunch of bags going to the airport for instance.

In all honesty, I make enough money that I don't mind flipping these people an extra dollar or two here and there. Like it was said before, if you don't want tip people then go somewhere you can serve yourself, but don't screw over the people who have to work hard in a thankless job.

As a bartender, it pisses me the f*** off when people don't tip. When you don't tip, I end up PAYING for a portion of your meal. That being said, I don't really agree with the concept of tipping. In this day and age, I don't think companies should be allowed to save money by only paying their employee's a fraction of the state minimum wage and relying on customer's to supplement the extra wages. In AZ, the minimum wage is about $7.60 IIRC. In a restaurant setting, they pay $4.25. Now, when I was bartending in WA, they paid minimum wage ($9.20 or whatever it is) and I also made tips. I was making right around $4k a month, more than most teachers I know in AZ.

So to recap, tipping is necessary in most places so servers and bartenders can pay for groceries. BUT, if restaurants weren't so damn cheap and actually paid their employee's a decent hourly wage, it wouldn't be needed.

I pay out roughly 10% per every meal, depending on what is ordered. So whatever you tip, I don't get all of it, only a portion. So if you don't leave a tip, I still have to pay out on your meal at the end of the night, and since you didn't tip, it comes directly out of my pocket.

Is this normal practice? Seems to be a crappy place to work based on those requirements. That means your employer is taking tip money, which is money given to the waitress for service, as part of their income and distributing it. Where do you work because I won't ever go there......I understand using tip amounts and somewhat distributing it to staff like bartenders but I don't agree that cooks and bus boys should be part of that.

Every restaurant I know of in AZ does this. We did it in WA also. They do it so they can charge the customer less on the food they order. Also, I have to tip out a bunch of different people. If I'm serving, I have to tip out the bartender for every drink they make one of my customers. I have to tip out bussers, food runners, and also have to tip out teppanyaki chefs. You'd be amazed how much money I lose when I tip out at the end of the night.
