Some of you guys who say tipping is stupid are both the people i hate(d) to serve and on to something. I agree that the restaurants Should pay a reasonable rate hourly, but good luck ever seeing that implemented. Having worked so many different jobs has given me the opportunity to realize the "tip" is sometimes a token of appreciation that is well received. I've done Pizza slut and steakhouses and sports bars to name a few (with terrible tippers and walk-outs), but the best impressions of humanity were when i was in a different service, Car Audio Installation. I mean honestly, you just paid $650 to for a guy to install a radio and set of speakers, do you really feel like tipping him? Probably not, considering you just spent a paycheck already, but there are times when that means more than you might know. That guy might not be as well off as you may think, and that tip could've changed his perspective. I've been down to my last dollar, i know how it feels to choose gas to get to work for the week or groceries. It's not fun.
For me it comes down to this. If my service was fantastic, you get my attention, if it was horrible you also get my attention and my monetary interpretation reflects it both ways. I've never walked out on a check because of bad service, but my "tip" might be in writing on the receipt and some pocket change to set the mood. Perhaps i'm spiteful, but in the same way i love the folks that cut my deli meat. They don't have a "tip" jar, but after so many visits with the repeated pleasantness and fantastic service they offer, i happily oblige them with a monetary supplement to my "thanks guys!". Although it's not the reason, You should see their face. The phrase "Catch someone doing something Right." has become one of my favorites. A person can give according to a percentage, but that doesn't always apply. If you are treated well and you genuinely appreciate someone's effort, no matter the line of work, then please let them know. It could be bigger than a 20 spot means to your wallet.
also, don't "tip" the guy on the corner with a cardboard sign. His wife picks him up in a new bimmer every night. I've seen it. it's apparently a good game, but no thanks.
