I assume she's homeless. She looked to be 30-something, was bundled up but didn't look filthy or terribly unkempt. I didn't see any cars parked outside except mine. She was hiding out in a corner with her blanket. I went in to drop off some packages and check my PO Box. I was startled for a moment because I thought I was in there alone and didn't notice her until I was leaving.

Its a quiet suburb so its rather unusual to see anyone homeless around here. I thought about telling the police, but I figured she wasn't begging or bothering anyone or even snoring. Its cold tonight.

I quietly left and made sure the door closed behind me (sometimes it gets stuck open). Hopefully she's not dead.

I'd make a horrible homeless person. I'm WAY too paranoid to sleep anywhere as warm and comfortable and easily accessible as a post office.

I thought for a moment that maybe she worked for the postal service and was catching some shut-eye before an early shift, but this was at 1am. They usually dont show up until 4 or 5 at the busier locations. Plus, she'd likely go behind the counter or something if she was an employee.

Fo realz. That chit can happen to almost anybody... You never know what kind of hell they went thru to put them in that situation. Especially with the economy the way it is now. How knows? These ppl might have been millionaires two years ago...

I saw a homeless guy sitting on the sidewalk at Whataburger this morning as I was ordering some breakfast. I doubled my order and gave one to the guy.

I can only hope someone would be kind to me if I were in that situation. This is the kind of stuff that motivates me to not live paycheck to paycheck...

If only Chicago didn't make me basically immune to seeing the homeless out there. Plus, I think half the people I see in the chi are not actually homeless, so I've become indifferent to helping them (d!ck move, I know). I've seen way too many people scamming for money around the city. I will, however, offer any extra food or offer to buy food for the homeless. It's funny that I've been turned down for this a couple of times. Makes me think the person isn't truly homeless.

or they're junkies/alcoholics. i was asked for money to buy food. i refused to give the dude money, but instead bought him a cheeseburger and fries from mcdonalds. i came out and offered it to him and the f*** turned it down with a disgusted face. i dumped the fries for the birds, unwrapped the burger, spit in it, wrapped it back up and tossed it at him. f*** ***hole.

just don't feed it "change" or there will be more of them...

But if speculation serves right, you will be seeing a lot more of them. :ohno:

I need to find the pic on my Dad's facebook... There is an entire family in my hometown that scams for money... They park their car 2 blocks away and stand on the corner with signs begging for cash. He happened to recognize the lady when she was on the corner, begging, because she scammed his church.

Either way, he played a nice prank. I'll try and find the pic and post up here in a few minutes..

I went to the local ghetto beer store a few weeks ago because I liked the good selection of cheap beer; but the last time I went there there was a guy standing so I would have to walk past him to get from my truck to the door, it was obvious that he was going to ask me for some money. I never even got out of my truck, reversed out of there and found another store. But a few weeks later I quit drinking, cold turkey, so no more beer store runs for a while. Perhaps that guy should do the same, not that it occurs to him.

Would have done the same thing like Numbnuts.
I would never give them money, but I'm willing to spend 3 bucks on a happy meal if they are in need.

That was not an argument. That was a statement towards Tita.

Not quite, when you get to the pro level you can reel people in without anyone calling "troll". I'm getting close, but not quite.

Yeah. Sadly, the area around where I work has really done a great job of killing my pity for the "homeless." Don't get me wrong, I still feel horrible for the legitimately homeless. But most of the panhandlers here are fakes. They've gotten very careless in their greed, too. I've been approached by some of them multiple times in the same night with different excuses. I've been approached by some night after night with the same "I just need a couple bucks for bus fair to get home." But the final straw was when they started camping drive through menus. I can't order my food without being harangued? At that point, I don't even care if they ARE legitimately down on their luck. Generally, when one is seeking favors, one shows respect. None of these beggars, legit or otherwise, do that. They look pitiful, sure. But there's no respect, no gratitude. It's EXPECTED that I'll give them some money. They only ask out of formality. It's not really a question, it's "I need money, give me some." No. I need money, too, dammit. Get lost.

talking about giving the homeless money, the other day i drove to my cousins house and caught a red light at an intersection. there was an old meth head looking woman asking for money on the corner. as i was driving back home, i notice she was still on the corner but this time she was in a wheelchair with a leg brace when less than a hour before she was standing up just fine. thats one reason why i stop giving money to people on the side of the road. some people ruin it for people that really need it.

I don't pity all homeless people, just the ones who really fought for their place and lost it all anyway and had swallowed their pride enough to live with family and friends for a bit while working ANY job they could get their hands on(McD's, bagger at a grocery store), and still didn't have enough time to get on their feet or have enough to offer anything to the hospitality they are given. For them, I'd give them all the money in my wallet(not CCs) at the time. Fortunately, I don't know of any. :P
