MinisterofDOOM wrote: Yeah. Sadly, the area around where I work has really done a great job of killing my pity for the "homeless." Don't get me wrong, I still feel horrible for the legitimately homeless. But most of the panhandlers here are fakes. They've gotten very careless in their greed, too.
Agreed.

A couple of winters ago, some homeless guy approached me asking for a dollar, I figured why not, so I gave him a dollar...I go into the gas station and wander around a bit and then get in line. The homeless guy finally walks in and goes ahead and picks up a case of beer.

Another weird encounter I had involved in front of a subway, some guy was asking for help because he was hungry and blah, blah, blah... I offered to give him some money to go get food but all he wanted was half of my sandwich (....wtf?). I even pulled $5 out of my wallet and as I was trying to hand it to him, he refused it and just kept asking for the sandwich. I eventually did give him half of my sandwich because I started to get this suspicion that he wasn't...mentally all there. I thought I was gonna get stabbed.

...what was this thread about again?

Think of how lonely a true homeless person is. Dogs will stick by your side no matter what, without judgment. That's their ONLY friend.

QFT -

True story ----> I was in the Waffle House one really cold winter day, watching a woman on the corner with a "Homeless: will work for food" sign. She also had a mutt on a leash. A woman stopped and handed her a Burger King bag out the car window. She smiled, waved, and took the bag. She sat down on the ground, tore the burger in half, and fed half of it to the dog. After the dog finished his (generic pronoun) bite, he laid his head in her lap. She sat there petting his head while she ate her food. When she was done, she stood up, tucked her sign under her arm, grabbed the dog's leash and they walked down the sidewalk together. I don't what ever happened to her, but I would like to think they both survived the night. Hopefully they found some shelter where they could keep each other warm.

Honestly, homeless people can be scary--- some can be belligerent and pushy. When hanging out with friends a few years ago in Philly, I swear we "ran" into the same "homeless" guy telling jokes for change in Chinatown *and* on South St (they're quite a ways from each other) several times in the same year. My friend and I would keep walking while the guys we were with would stop (and yes, they knew it was the *same* dude). He wouldn't let them go at that point so we'd have to wait down the street. One time he got in my ex-bf's face at night on South St asking for change. South St can be creepy at night so that was unnerving. I just think it's scam most of the time.. you can never tell. I rather donate to a soup kitchen/pantry. Or give food.

I don't see anyone complaining about her sleeping in the post office, or making blanket statements...

I dont ever give money to homeless people. Ever. Because it doesn't help. A truly homeless person usually fits one of three categories. 1) Someone who is down on their luck or from a bad neighborhood, but is other wise a normal person 2) Someone who's life is completely consumed by drugs and/or alcohol and 3) Someone with serious mental illness.
In all cases the best scenario is to get them to seek help from one of the dozens and dozens of organizations that can actually help them deal with and attempt to get out of their situation. All money from begging does is allow them to stay in a bad situation. Its a sad situation that requires the right type of kindness.

Once again, there were no blanket statements either. My hometown is consumed by nothing but drugs and welfare. Trust me, I've seen plenty of people down on their luck. Hell, I even witnessed a girl I went to school with selling herself on a street corner. Next time you come in a thread trying to argue that people are making blanket statements, you should at least use spell check if you want people to take you seriously. ;)

Haha!

PS I gave that man my sandwhich because I know for a fact he is homeless and I really didn't think that anyone was going to eat it at my house anyway...Why throw it away? The man thanked me, ripped open the bag and began to shove that sandwhich into his face. I felt good about it to.

I tend to be "to nice" to people, and I really don't give a f*ck what anyone has to say about that! So shut up xdisaster240sx! ;)

You should give me the sandwich. At least you know I'll eat it instead of selling it for drugs.

She's not the one that insulted your grammar. Actually noone insulted your grammar. Just the spelling, and that was me, which she was quoting, but somehow didn't get the quote boxes in there. And as far as living that lifestyle. Well, let's just say... Some of us already have. :slap:

She wasnt bashing being homeless dummy. She was bashing you for not spelling correctly. Not only do you need to learn grammar but you need to learn how to read. Theres a difference between being homeless and being retarded...youre not homeless so what does that leave? :squint:

I was homeless for a few years in Los Angeles, back when real estate was getting expensive & wages did not cover the difference. Best/worst years of my life. Nothing worse than getting woken up from a deep sleep my police car floodlights, or by someone running off (who knows what they were about to do to my body).
