Looks us 65 million of us in the east have a ringside seat for Hurricane Irene.
Post up some pics and share your stories.

I imagine the TV weatherpeople are in their glory right now trying to hype it into another storm of the century (what earthquake?). We'll see.

NYC is expecting 12" of rain and Mayor Bloomberg announced they are suspending subway/buses at noon Tomorrow (Saturday). Very unusual.

The NYDOT and MTA will be shutting down bridges if they see fit due to excessive winds, and all "ZONE-A" areas are being evacuated as we speak. I also found this article on jalopnik about how outdated the pumping system is for the subways, pretty crazy stuff. Right now im in harlem and its getting a little weird down here, the grocery stores are PACKED with people that think an apocalypse is coming...

Not exactly looking forward to this, landfall expected in and around my area of Connecticut.

Hoping for a rapid weakening, or I and the rest of New England through Mid Atlantic is in big trouble.

Everyone...be safe.

I just moved to the south shore of Mass. Some of the nor'easters here were pretty good storms with plenty of wind. I'm a little curious to see what this hurricane brings.

My wife and I are leasing this house, so as long as we don't get hurt, I'm not real concerned about how much damage it takes. I picked up renter's insurance that became effective yesterday, so I'm feeling ok. We are perched about a half mile from cape cod bay at the end of the canal, but the neighborhood is a solid 50' above sea level. I don't think we'll get flooded out.

Most of my good stuff (generator, tools, wood...) are still in Vermont, so I've filled up my truck and I have 20 extra gallons of fuel. If the aftermath is that bad here I'll just retreat back "home". There are a few trees around the house that concern me a bit, so I'm going to re-arrange the driveway and put the 240 all by itself in the front yard. It should be safe there. If my SRT-4 gets crunched I can re-shell it at least. I'll never find another 240 coupe body for what I paid like 7 years ago.

I wish everyone else in the path good luck, I'll post pics if anyone is interested.

The just evacuated Ocean City, MD yesterday (good thing I took my vacation there last week!). Honestly, I think its mainly going to be hype. I always get excited for things like this and then come out disappointed.

Yeah it died quickly. Eh, might as well make the best of it.

I remember during Isabel me and my brother did a mortar when all the lights were out. Looked like the sun shined through for a second.

I live about 2 or 3 miles from the coast. I think I'm safe from flooding but everything from my street back had a mandatory evacuation.

It's hard to tell if this is all hype or if it really is a serious threat. Closing NYC public transportation is unusual. As are evacuations around here.

Checking in.

I made sure to take down some bird feeders so they don't fly off and hit one of the cars. :P

It's just going to be wind and rain-- lots of rain. There's just going to be really bad flooding because we've had a lot of rain the past two weeks. I like how the media is trying to hype a Cat 1. As far as NYC being evacuated, that's because of the storm surge if nothing else. If it hits at high tide, and with Manhattan being at practically sea level (8ft??)--yeah they're in for it.

yeah thats my big concern too, being half a mile from the bay. we packed our important papers and electronics and headed out. i took the tent down over my 240 and left the frame up. just wrapped the tent around the car. i really hope the trees next door to me dont land on my baby.

Um, Isabel was worse about 10 years ago. This storm is nothing.

Wasn't in the area for Isabel, can't comment on it. I'm talking shear size of the formation.

It's starting to get fun.

I think a big concern in NYC is not only flood water but also skyscraper. The wind is accelerated by them.. South manhattan is pretty level with the water too. I think it was a safe call but I think the media may hype it up a little too.

Well, just like the quake, Megalopolis was not made to handle hurricanes.

Old buildings, almost no flood protection and lots of big deciduous trees translates to a problem when fast winds and lots of water are involved.
Not to mention how the subway pumps are not meant to handle that kind of water in the tunnels.

(they don't have any of those things in Florida, yet they act like we have no concept... )

I think LongBeachCoupe (Brian) was evacuated. I'm pretty sure Phenom78 and Mattv609 are in the same area.

Reports of people dying have already come in. 1 surfer in FL and almost all others were hit by falling trees and branches while driving. Why are people even driving right now? Who cares if its only a cat 1, trees kill! Another great example of stupid a$$ f***ing people. A bunch of Nala's running around.

I just talked my brother who's a chef at a restaraunt in Oldtown Alexandria.. yep, he's working. He's pissed and has the right to be. They only had a few people and that was hours ago. During the Snowmageddon, THEY WERE STILL OPEN with 36 inches on the ground. All because of some cheap f***s afraid to lose a quick buck by closing. Absolutely rediculous

SO the surfer was driving? Or a driver was surfing and got hit by trees?

It hit the coast here in NC around 8am, I live about 100 miles away. We got a lot of rain and strong winds here. After effects lasted all day. Lost power around 2pm, got it back at 10pm. Progress Energy reported power losses to over one million customers.
