While i was at the store shoping for gear oil for my transmission and diff. i saw mobil 1 synthetic gear oil, can i use that on my 91 240sx transmission and diff. I know its more expensive but i'm just asking if i can use it, and is it better than regular gear oil, i don't mind spending the extra few dollars.

Thanks

Vlavoline synchromesh and Redline are also great transmission fluids. Just be sure to stay away from anything that is GL-5

Diff:Mobil 1 in the diff is decent. I'd check to make sure it's GL-5, the stuff I found locally was GL-5. If you are willing to spend a few more bucks, get the Motul LSD oil. That stuff is wonderful.

transmission:Look for GL-4. Redline MT90 is another recommendation, but if you've got a few more bucks, try Motul's Motylgear. Motul was hard for me to find, but it feels better than the mobil and redline stuff I've tried.

ya, brass synchos and GL5 is bad. You can put GL5 in the diff though I hear.

stay away from synthetic for the diff. you can use cheap oil to break it in but of course kaaz recommends its own (expensive) fluid for normal use.

the BEST suggestion i would give for the mission is Pennzoil Syncromesh.

DO NOT USE MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC.

as far as differential, sometimes companies say no syntheic, sometimes they do say synthetic.

Is there anything to these rumors or is it just hearsay?

Ouch, just checked my fsm, GL4 for the transmission is confirmed. I guess I should change out the GL5 Mobile one I have in the transmission.

I had initially heard some good stuff about the Pennzoil or GM Synchromesh, but have recently heard of folks having some problems after running this oil. Apparently the **** is thin...really thin. The Honda guys seem to like it, but we're not running Honda transmissions.

Lots of people have used Redline and I've heard no major complaints. I need to change my fluids this spring and I'm most likely going to get some Redline MT90.

MT90 is a 75w-90 GL4 with low corrosivity, so it's OK with yellow metal synchros. I can't recall what the FSM recommends, but MTL is thinner than the MT-90. Details are on Redline's website. They have a nice little tech document to read.

the "dont use synthetic in the diff" thing is for clutch type limited slip differentials, we have open diff's (stock) where synthetic is perfectly fine, as well as gl-5 is fine also. for the transmission, redline MT90 is good, even though it is synthetic, they put additives in it to make it less slippery (transmissions need friction to shift, another reason why not to use normal syn.) also, for maunual transmissions in our cars, any 75W-90 GL-4 oil is ok.

Just bought some Redline, gl4 stuff. $8.95 a bottle. Oh well, peice of mind is priceless. I only had the gl5 stuff in for a few thousand miles. I hope the guy who had the car before me ran gl4. Hopefully there isn't any long term damage.

I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic in my transmission for the last 20,000 miles and havn't had any problems. It actually quieted down the transmission some, especially when it was in neutral and the engine is running.

Well according to Redline there is something in the gl5 that doesn't work right with brass syncros and can cut the lifespan down to half. That is enough to get my attention. The FSM also says gl4 only. That is two confirmations. GL4 it is.

Holy crap!!!. They weren't kidding about that GL4 thing. My shifts are perfect now with out resistance. It just falls right into gear now. I thought it was the short shifter breaking in or something but the way the car feels now is night and day. Definitely GL4 in the transmission, I actually used the Redline MT90 stuff.

1. gl4 gl5 - different spec gear oil2. gl4 cuz gl5 eats brass, parts in your tranny3. yes4. 1/2 breaker bar to pop the drain plug, a phillips head screwdriver to undo the console, a 10mm to undo the inner boot, and a flat head to undo the snap ring for the shifter. price? shouldn't you already have these in your toolbox?

4. NO, if you wanna fill it under the car, from the side of transmission; theres a screw, unscrew it and fill it with some pump oil gun????? is that the name?

ALSO, IS THIS SYNTHETIC OIL IS GOOD FOR DAILY USE, RELIABLE LONG LASTING VEHICLE??

its called a fluid pump, but they are expensive, its much easier to just undo the shifter and pour it in. redline would be better for a daily driver

My hand pump was $9.99 at auto zone. It works great, takes me 15-20 minutes to change my transmission fluid.

Either way to fill up the transmission, you'll still get a filled transmission. Personally I don't like being under the car with crap falling on my face all the time. Hence why I prefer doing it from the top. Just make sure you get about 2.4L of gear oil in the transmission. If you want to make the argument of "but it's more accurate from the bottom, not really since your car probably isn't the most level when it's elevated in the air for you to crawl under there and fill the filler hole either. It's a matter of preference.

Reason i want to change it , becuaseeeee, i alreaedy paid mechanic to change the fluid in transmission when he was changing my clutch(stage1)

after that, my transmission got way louder, especially in neutral. also on 4th gear when i step off gas i slow down due to engine compression but the transmission and drivetrain makes this loud noise, it sounds good, but it wasn't there before.

So, reason i want to cahnge it becuase of noise in neutral; it gets a bit lower after car been warmed up.

1. will it cause leaks, since its especially getting really cold, winter now??

2. and you said its reliable, for everyday use longer lasting transmission's??
