An update: After reading the responses regarding "bottoming Out" I have discovered a couple of solutions. 1) The problem does not lie with the mechanics of the suspension. Its the self leveling "computer". The dealer must connect to the proprietary software and computer /scanner. The on board computer must then "re-learn the correct height and "PRESURE LEVEL for the air ride" 2) If your vehicle has a 4 wheel drive option..... (switch on the dash) After starting the engine, while in park, turn the switch to 4 wheel Low position for about 10 seconds. Turn it back to the normal two wheel position and drive on as normal. This technique has worked on my QX56. The rear end on the SUV stiffens drastically and there is nearly no "play: in the rear end of the vehicle. Bottoming out is no longer a problem after I do this procedure. I repeat this every time I start the SUV. This is a temporary fix until I can get it to the dealer and have the dealer re-Learn my computer. All of the above was gained from an Infiniti / Nissan certified mechanic.

I don't think the R50 Pathfinder/QX4 ever had a factory self leveling suspension.

Electronically-adjustable shocks were available on some 96-97 R50s.
