I actually plan to talk to him about it this fall. Apparantly the coating is meant to be re-applied ever few years. There is a place in MN that does it, I just need to figure out where, so I can have the Maxima sprayed.PoorManQ45 wrote:
I really would be interested in this. Maybe next time you talk to one of the mechanics could you ask them for a little more info so I could read up on it? It's obviously there because you see it all the time, just curious.
Heated or not, I doubt axle grease would ever have the penetrating power that ATF will. Yes, this is just speculation on my part, but I work with both on a regular basis, and I just dont see it happening.PoorManQ45 wrote: When grease is heated to the point of easily flowing it will penetrate very well. That's why I started off with the suggestion of heating it. I understand that it will simply cover the metal if you don't heat it.
So engine oil will hang for + - 6 months on a polished cylinder wall. ATF is designed to hang longer, and we are talking about a porous chunk of steel. 6 months is more than enough to last through a winter.PoorManQ45 wrote: The issue seems to occur once you start approaching 6 months.
