Good job for those who participated.....

Answers to SD Quiz #6:

1. VG 30 ET

2. Lyme Rock, in Conn., where Paul Newman was mentored by the cerebral veteran Sam Posey....

3. 2 inches; Even if it is only for a fraction of an inch.....the smallest I.D. of an exhaust is the functioning, flow diameter of the exhaust...therefore, we like mandrel bends, which are constant-radius bends over compression bends....and all welding slag and irregularities should be avoided or removed....

Good kob guys and girls....

S.D. quiz # 7:

1. Which side of the cam or camshafts is the most important in boosted applications? The intake or the exhaust?

2. Cars that have nitrous, turbos and superchargers like to pull against high ratios like a 4:11 or lower ratios like a 3.7:1?

3. What is the key reason why todays cars rust out less than those pre-mid eighties...(that is what manufacturing process changed)?

Good luck! SD

1. Exhaust. After the larger combustion cycle, you gotta be able to move the exhaust gas out2. Lowerrrrr.3. I'm assuming some kind of coating, most likely bonded through electrolysis or some other kind of electromagnetic coating processes.

1. Exhaust, there is a reason or reasons but I can't elaborate fully. You want to expel the spent gasses, but you also do not want to cause more reversion into the opposite cylinder. I don't know the exact science or which is the most significant here, but there is probably a tradeoff between efficiency and max power just like an NA setup.

I will know that I really can not elaborate if it turns out to be the intakes, we will see.

2. I'm guessing low, because of the strong midrange torque.

3. Metallurgy - the composition of the steel was changed.

I just found this, I love quizzes, even when I'm wrong.

1: The exhaust side is very important. When you are already forcing air through the intake, you have to get all that air out the exhaust.

2: It would depend on the application, a Drag car may run "longer" gears. where as a autocross car would run shorter gears. Lag has nothing to do with gearing, if you are lagging, you are in the wrong gear.

3: This would be a total guess. I would say that the Primer/painting process has changed.

At SD for the ME degree. But not from. CA -> NE -> SD

My guess the exhaust is important, because you can build up pressure before you pop the cork.

1) I'm guessing exhaust. If the intake air is compressed, it will 'force' its way into the cylinder. So I guess the focus should be on getting the burnt gas out.

2) Lower. Making more power at (nearly) all rpm levels suggests you should have taller gearing to keep making that extra power lower and to reduce the number of gear changes.

3) Galvanized steel? I'm sure it has to do with the type of steel used, but I cant say whether its the chemical composition of the steel or some kinda sealant/coating applied after the chassis is built.

Haha, I'm going to go with the opposite if everyone!

1. Intake, because no-one has said it yet.2. Higher, also because no-one has said it yet.3. Because they haven't been around long enough to rust!

P.s. I'm tired and I wish I could think of better answers!

Answers to Quiz 7:

Great job by many...

1. The exhaust (duration and lift) is generally more able to be manipulated to give more power than the intake side.....that is to say that it can affect flow and thus horsepower more than the intake side.2. For acceleration, Turbos, superchargers and nitrous like to pull against a lower gear ratio...eg 3.77:1 vs. 4.11:1.. 3. Galvanization of the steel panels has revolutionized the resistance sheet metal has against rust.

NICO/Speeddoctor quiz #8

1. These days, with advanced technology, the n.a.c.a. duct is less aerodynamic than a good raised hood scoop. True/False

2. In Japan, Nissan Skylines from the 1980s and 1990s came in a four door version: True /False

3. The good thing about removing my catalytic converters will give me more low-end torque.

Good Luck!

BTW: My new Avatar is not me it is Mr. K. True/False

1: False. The benefit of NACA ducts is that they disturb the airflow over the car less than a raised scoop, so they don't interfere with overall aerodynamic design as much.

2: True. The GTR was never factory produced as a 4 door (there was the special Autech edition R33, though) but the main sellers of the Skyline lineup were essentially average midsize family cars and could be had with 4 doors.

3: False, usually removing cats is bad for low end torque, but it can help higher-rpm horsepower.

Everyone here should recognize Mr. K. If not...Google and read!

True.

Some 80's Skylines were offered in a 4 door, but in the R31's they were badged with a somewhat goofy name that I can't quite remember. There were also station wagons offered. You could get the R30 RS Turbo in a 4 door, as well as the Paul Neumann edition in a 4 door. One of our very own moderators owns one.

The very first GT-R was a 4 door, my friend.1969-1970. 1971 was the first year for the 2 door coupe.PGC10 denounces 4 door GT-RKPGC10 denounces 2 door.

1. False? Idk much about hood scoops, I think they're gaudy and they would spell doom for my Z32.

2. Absolutely. I've seen plenty of 4 door Skylines.

3. It all depends on the engine, but generally, removing the cats will yield higher top-end. On my Suabru, however, I would lose top end if I deleted cats, since the EJ33 likes the backpressure. So, false.

Mr. K FTW!
