You guys are doing great!

1. Direct overhead cam designs are better because: a. less moving parts b. speeddoctor says so c. less valve-float at high RPMs d. all of the above

2. High speed aerodynamic drag increases with increase in speed by a factor of a. X x 2 b. X to the fourth power c. x to the second power d. non of the above

3. When Mr. K. took his first L.A freeway test drive in a Bluebird sedan, what was he most concerned about after his aborted trip?

Good Luck!
1) I think there are less moving parts. Pushrods are eliminating. And there is less valve float. Gotta go with d) all of the above

2) Semi truck mfg'ers were not concerned with aerodynamics for decades. And my Teg goes as fast as a limited F150. I know drag has to increase by a factor of speed. I'm going with b) x^4 though I should go with the popular x^2

3) Brakes... with a turbo'd Stanza, I'd be most worried about stopping in LA traffic. I dont know why I'm thinking a Bluebird is a Stanza when it had a SR20. Its not a Sentra...

Dr. Rex, have you given up the surgical game yet? You should teach automotive history when you retire.

Was trying to find the answer to third one. But dug up some history on Prince Motor Company. Not sure if they had license with Mercedes or Prince actually reverse engineered the Mercedes motors and made their own with Mercedes technology. I once confused the R390 with R380 said that the 300zx and Skyline were rooted from the r390.. .. but really the R380 by prince. Funny how merger with Prince also leads to the L series motors in our datsuns.

Answers to Quiz #10:

1. d. all of the above

2. x4....if u take a gokart for example..every tube and part that the air moves over counts individually...so a one piece body greatly reduces drag at high speeds. If the coeffecient of drag for a car is lets say .3 the over-all drag is .3xmph to the 4th power. eg. at 50 mph .3x50 to the 4th = 1875000 units of drag vs. at 100mph .3x100 to the 4th 30000000. So, doubling the speed of the vehicle increase the drag by a factor of 16! Thats why at really high speeds (over 200mph for a production car), aerodynamics means so much!

3. When Mr. K. drove the little four door 1000cc Bluebird sedan on an LA freeway in 1960, with a top speed of 47mph...and having huge 60s era American cars whizzing by him at 70+mph...he quickly pulled off onto side streets and returned to their humble 300 sqft. office and telegraphed Japan: "We are in trouble" S.D.

Gah, I was about to say top speed, but I didn't know any of the specs on the Bluebird! That was a good one, doc.

1. No idea...Bluejay?

2. 350Z?

3. Katayama

About Mr. K. It's funny that came up. I was having a conversation with a friend of mine last night about Z cars (we both love the S30 240z) and Mr. K's name came up. I asked what his last name was, and he gave me the answer.

Too funny.

For trucks, the 500-series (520).

For cars, the 311 preceded the S30... The 312 preceded the 410 and 411... But there was a 310 (name, not chassis) AFTER the 411 and 510, and there was a 210 AFTER them all as well!

Kind of a sketchy question there, doc!

The 310 was produced the same years as the 210. 1978-82. It was FWD where the 210 was RWD

I'm going to have to say April of 2000! Final answer.

The rest are best answered by older niconauts.
