Rubasu's are fun.

Just try not to get the AWD superiority complex common to many subaru owners.

Thanks for all the kind words.

I am planning on breaking it in properly. Haven't read abouut it on nasioc, but know enough about cars to do it right.

Hash, one of the upgrades for '09 was stiffer springs, wider tires and thicker/stiffer sway bars.

Beaner, if you were going to drop that thing, I would hope you would have gotten the other subie you were talking about. I'm assuming this one is going to be the all around vehicle- performance machine in the summer, and unstoppable tree climber in the winter.

You know the manual break in is for liability for the company and not for the customer benefit.

Think about it. If the company told you to drive it hard... a car you never driven before... you are bound for an accident... that's a liability.

The break in period are for proper ring seal, which now in days with plateau honing doesn't take as long as the older cars.

If you drive it light, you will not get enough force on those rings into proper seal. And you will have blow by gases inside your crank for the rest of it's life. Means dark oil quicker.

Drive it hard, varying rpm, up shifting and downshifting both loads the engine differently. You will allow the cylinder pressures to push the rings into the cylinder walls making better ring and cylinder wall seal.

Better seal means less loss of moving boundary work, means more available power.

Here is what I am going to tell you.

Don't take my word for it.

Do your research.

And you will see a lot of people drive it how it's going to be driven.

Good Trade off.

Not quite, but close.

The only thing you're missing out on is the 6-speed trans, which is *much* stronger than the 5-speed in your car.

Oh, and get a stiffer/bigger rear sway pronto, as they understeer like pigs from the factory. If they still come with RE92's, replace those too.
The 08 STi still has quite a bit different in the engine bay. The major things being bigger top mount, dual avcs, and a bigger turbo. The 09 engine is an 08 engine with the VF52 turbo slapped on. Everyone who owns a 08 wrx or 05+ legacy gt is really looking forward to what the VF52 can do. Stage 2 looks like it will be making pretty good numbers.

Hash is right about swaybars and tires. They really change the cars. I don't know anything about the 09 sways so you may be ok there, but if you have RE92s think about changing them. They have the suck, especially for how expensive they are.

Between the upgrades to the 09 wrx and the deals on the 09 STi (I have heard 8k off and 0% financing) the 08 buyers are looking like suckers. Nice purchase!

I just can't wait until the engine is broken in, and I can really get on it.

They also seem to come with the 08's nasty little surprise...

Wasn't a fan of the new body style until I saw a new STI in the flesh. Me-likey now. Not as much as the old wagons though, but still.

This is what I was referring to. Some number of 09 owners had encountered engine knock with less than 3k miles. In 08, they had a stop sale campaign to figure out the issue. But it came back again in 09. Spun rod bearing seems to be the issue. SOA is replacing these motors without much fuss though.

This is why I emphasized on breaking in the motor below 4k rpm for first 1k miles. If you abused it in the first 1k miles, dealership may deny warranty claim.

May be you can talk to the dealership about this issue, to get the concern logged in the car's service history.

To be on the safe side, I had my oil changed at 1k miles to show that I am overly cautious (which I am). My car (08) is at 3k miles now. So far so good...knock on wood.

Parts and assembly 100% Japan

As far as breaking it in, I am doing it properly and keeping the RPM's down under 4k, and trying to stay off the freeways, and do as much city driving as possible.

wow, this quote came from a Subaru service adviser with one of their dealers in response to another like-minded service adviser:
blackfang wrote:That is why I am starting to ignore more and more threads/posts from people asking for any info or advice. I figured they can handle that on their own. It is almost not even worth the trouble to help.
they go on to either sidestep direct questions on the topic or downplay the problem leading me to believe that either:

a) Subaru service advisers aren't kept in the know about service issues from corporate, or

b) Subaru service providers are just a mouthpiece for concerned corporate entities that don't want catastrophic engine failure to seem severe or unexpected to their customers.

well now there's more than just the looks to keep us from buying them .
