Or... go the technically difficult route and install a VQ35DE. Which I would do if I could find someone competent in the SF bay area that could do it.

This is what i found out about TX 1995 and older vehicles will receive the Two Speed Idle (TSI) test while 1996 and newer vehicles receive the On-Board Diagnostic(OBDII) test.

ASM Emissions Test

This test uses a dynamometer, which measures emissions under simulated driving conditions. In a sense, it's like a treadmill stress test for your vehicle. This tailpipe test is a cost-effective way to get very accurate, realistic results. A vehicle will fail the test if there is an excessive amount of Hydrocarbon, Carbon Monoxide or Oxides of Nitrogen.

Please note that 4 wheel drive vehicles will continue to receive the current Two-Speed Idle test. If your vehicle fails the ASM test, you can return to the same public inspection station within 15 days of your initial test for a free retest.

Two Speed Idle TestThe Two-Speed Idle test is a tailpipe emissions test. This means the analyzer measures exhaust emissions directly from the vehicle's tailpipe with the engine idling at a high and then low speed. TSI measures most of the common factors contributing to the formation of lung damaging ground level ozone.

A vehicle will fail the test if there are excessive amounts of hydrocarbons or carbon monoxide. TSI is used for older vehicles that are not equipped with the advanced on-board diagnostic computer system.

Hope that helped. My inlaws live in valley view by Denton, They told me that there emission place just checks the horn and light things like that.

Hey I am new here but been interested in 240sx's for a while now. I was thinking of buying a 97 240 with a SR20 DET black top that is in Arizona and I am not sure if it will pass in IL. I dont think the engine has had much done to it but it has a turbo and the IL site says turbo'd cars cant pass. I would be really pissed if I brought it here and had to get rid of it. I read everything on this that I could find and nothing was really a straight answer.

bhavedikian - if you know of which P.O.'s dont test and could PM me back that would help alot or if you found a way to beat the system please lemme know.

If anyone has anymore info about this in IL please help me!

If you want a 240 with a SR in IL, buy a 95 or older. They're exempt from emission testing. So if you're really wanting a kouki S14, buy a 95 zenki and convert it to a kouki. Or you might be able to register the 97 down in southern Illinois near the Carbondale area (SIU). We don't have any kind of testing or inspections down here.

My Sr20, 1991 240, passed w/ help of a buddy/fellow Toyota tech. Though it cost me 50 duckets. It didn't pass at idle. Having someone to check it and pass it is a plus.

Any northern VA folk here with experience smogging their SR? My S13 has been sitting in storage for.... too long (nearly four years), and I'd like to get it back on the road.

What Kind of intrest is there in "KA" simulator. I have quite an extensive knowlage and a good tallent bank that I can access to develope this. I live in Michigan and I personaly have an S13 sr20det in my 1980 mgb (see the car on the sr20forum). I under stand the motor sport passon no matter the engine, make, or model. If I do develope this what is the interst in such a item. I invison it as a "COOL box" that plugs in to the KA ecu and takes certain critical readings from the SR signal wires (RPM, tps, etc), Then simulates whats the sensors in the KA would see under those conditions. Much much more techical then that but in a nut shell that is it. When done the simulator would make the KA ECU OBDII scanner (ping) compatable given the consultant is wired up to the KA ecu. I started this before for a friend that lived in an emmision nazi state but he moved due to work and we left it alone. When said and done We estimated it would be in the $300-$400 to make.

yeah bro I really screwed myself by buying an 0bd2 s14 because now I want to do a 2jz swap and can't and I live in ct...So I think i'll sell the car and get the 95 and save more money for the usdm version of the 2jz. I don't think that will be an issues since it has all of the smog stuff for emissions...just costs more than a jdm 2jz aristo. Plus I have to finish install the evap system on this car to, thank god for friends that work at shops and discounts

I have been looking for this very thing! I have a 98 s14 with sr20 now, but will probably go to a rb25 soon. Inspections are getting to be a pain in the a$$! I am looking at a 96 z32 ecu for obd on the rb25, but what you are decribing for the ka ecu could be implemented on most obd2 ecus of the same era. The 1996 z32 and the 1998 s14 have the same obd monitors, engine rotation sensor on the ring gear, intake air temp, fuel temp, map sensor, pre and post cat o2, evap system, egr temp, etc.
