I just got this in an email from my friend. I'm sure this would have been no problem had they contributed to a democratic candidate.

A similar situation happened at Wal-Mart in 2006, because they supported gay rights.

"A conservative group that had called on supporters to boycott Wal-Mart’s post-Thanksgiving day sales to protest the retailer’s support of gay-rights groups withdrew its objections Tuesday, saying the company had agreed to stay away from controversial causes.
The American Family Association, which had been asking supporters to stay away from Wal-Mart on Friday and Saturday — two of the busiest shopping days of the year — said it was pleased by a statement the company issued Tuesday." - quoted from msnbc link

Wow. Why would a retailer get involved with politicians/politics? You're gonna make more people unhappy then those you make happy.

I think the candidate was supporting a business plan that would benefit Target in that state.

It's not like Target gave that candidate the money and said "Bring the ghey's down RAWR!"

They are helping that candidate because that candidate will help Target. The ghey's just see that Target is helping someone anti-ghey and instantly think Target is anti-gay. :tisk:

Target has always given 5% to the community. I'm sure that some of these causes are things that their customers might disagree with. This time they gave to a cause that benefits the business-related community... it really is no big deal. The liberals are trying to blow this out of proportion. Let's hope it backfires!

I was at Target today, to support them by buying things. The place was PACKED like Black Friday :mike

It isn't. Some people are just so miserable in their pathetic little lives that they feel like they have to drag everyone else down to their level.

+1 for Target having great clothes at great prices. That's where I got almost all of Priss and Saraya's school clothes this year.

Minnesota, Target's home state, does need help in the business dept. Their unemployment is high.

I don't know what Target all does for Kansas (where I live) financially, but at the RDC (regional distribution center), "relief kits" are packed with toiletries, granola bars, water, knick-knacks, etc. Things people would need in the event of a natural disaster like hurricane Katrina and that tornado that took out Greensburg. Thousands get put together and are then given out in those disaster areas. Sure, I bet people have bottles of water, but how many were able to grab a razor, contact solution, crossword puzzles, etc? We also do a lot of volunteer events around the community.

Yeah, keep it up. Their stock dropped 1 point Friday to 50.81. I want to see it back into the 60's like it was pre-recession.

Bottom line - Target does a lot of good for a great variety of people. They don't deserve hate.

There's one 1 mile from my house. I'll shop there as much as normal. Act like nothing is going on.

Eh. Political boycotts/shopping sprees are equally dumb. I'll shop at Target if the opportunity and need arise.

We got your number IB. If the boycott was coming from conservatives/Christians/Republicans I know you'd increase your Target spending.

I work for Target. We have a few openly gay people still working there that don't give a rat's patootie what the company does with their money so long as we all get a paycheck. People need to stop making a big stink about dumb stuff.

Nope. The nearest Target is across the river. There's a Wal-Mart just a few blocks away.

Just because I argue against you doesn't mean I'm your polar opposite. All it means is that I think you're wrong.

I don't understand why people think that the idea of a commercial boycott is dumb. You use the leverage you have in the political system and in the marketplace - it would be dumb if you didn't. Even if you do not yourself have enough leverage to alter the course, why allow your hard earned dollars pass through to a cause you don't believe in when the market presents you with an alternative.

Because you're buying a product, not a system. The system is what it is, and there's more effective ways to express yourself than through spending your three dollars on shampoo elsewhere.

Mostly what's dumb is the fervor with which people proceed to execute these things.

"I'm boycotting Target!"
"Well, alright then; I'm gonna go get a pizza."

They might not want to pay benefits for gay couples. That's a potentially *large* additional expense for a national retailer like Target.

Protesting is always stupid, but there SHOULD be very restrictive limits on what any single individual or corporation can donate to a political candidate. Thanks to Citizens United, this is no longer the case.

Anyone who thinks these corporations are donating for ideological reasons needs to get their heads checked. If they think a donation to a pro gay rights candidate in another jurisdiction would somehow help them, they'd be all over it, as they should be. They answer only to their shareholders.

I don't think they've done anything wrong. The Supreme Court did something wrong.
