Ok i know i'm new to the board but i want to throw my opinion in as well....
Being a previous supra owner and general Toyota enthusiast(i've had pretty much every "sporty" toyota car made from 88 to 94 with the exception of the later model MR2 and MKIV supra:) ) I have read tons of information on the supra coming back topic. They have ranged from coming back as a v12 mid engine car to a v6 front wheel drive vehicle. Either way "IF" it does come back it wouldn't be the same as the MKIV, it would be a giant step backwards. You can assume this because A) Toyota is all about the bottom line(unlike Nissan and Mazda which feel the need to have a flagship sports car just because it gives pride to the line), B) though the sports car market is picking up steam it is no where near where toyota would consider it beneficial to them, C) Yes you can pay 20k for a 93 Twin Turbo supra but that in no way benefits toyota and they could care less about it because when the car was new and being sold at 60k+ it was hard to move htem off the lots(it is worth every penny though) because no one wants to pay 60k for a Toyota. Look at the last year sales numbers.D) CA emissions as usual kill any possibility of a car having any amount of power. I know it's for a good reason though but people who want performance suffer. Not to mention but CA is a HUGE market for vehicles and if they can't sell an car setup to do emissions in CA they won't try and sell it throughout the rest of the states. This is the reason the supra dropped out of the states in 98. 1998 only NA's were sold in CA, didn't sell much at all, while turbos were sold throughout the rest of the states. Numbers PLUMETTED big time for the turbo sales.E) Most dealers don't know shiz. You'd think they did because Hey it's their product but the fact is that 75% of them couldn't tell you what a Levin or Trueno are and the other 25% would try and sell you on the idea that the MRS is better than the MR2 and that the celica is a sports car.
I could go on and on about the supra but i won't:)
As for the Scion(s). Either you love them or you hate 'em. At first i thought they were ugly as hell but it really grew on me. Especially after seeing them in person. I personally like the xB for daily driving but the xA looks better in aero kits. suspension and engine are the same so I have to base it off of looks:) I'm glad they're killing the echo. No market for it anymore. I was kind of mad they never brought over the vitz(echo hatch) to america because the sedan was extremely blah and generic(though still toyota quality). For economy, they want to push on their hybrid engine technology so if u want great gas mileage get a prius. The xA and xB get decent mileage tho. Even with the xB's boxy non-aero friendly styling. they're in the mid 30's/gallon last i checked. As for performance, I mean come on what do you expect for a 13-14k base price vehicle? If u want something "fast" then you'll have to go with the tC, celica, MRS etc(or my personal favorite bang for buck Dodge Neon SRT-4).
Now the tC is MORE THEN LIKELY going to kill the celica just like how the xA and xB are more than likely going to kill the echo. This decision tho is not because of a push towards hybrid engines or better styling or performance. This decision will be based on sales figures and market pricing. The fact is that the celica GTS, as do most toyota "sports cars", has pretty much priced itself out of the market. For about the same price(24k) or less than a GTS you(Americans) now have the option of choosing the Mazdaspeed Protege, Subaru WRX, Dodge Neon SRT-4, RSX Type-S. All of these cars boast better performance numbers SO performance seekers will of course lean more towards the other vehicles. For a little bit more you have the option of the RX8, 350z, WRX STI and Lancer EVO so why even mess with a GTS. The GT has an economy motor so most people who buy it are for it's aesthetic appearance and even then 18k MSRP is way to high. Now i wouldn't bet the farm that Toyota is going to kill the celica but i would definately say with some certainty that i'm sure they're thinking about it. And if they do they will of course push more on the tC to fill the niche for a relatively cheap "performance car". But we could sit her and guess and play with ideas all day long. Only time will tell:)
