I'm sure both parties could have done things differently, but my beef is with the Prez putting himself in a precarious position. He SHOULD have said, "I don't really know enough about the situation to comment."

That pretty much sums my view. Its disappointing that Obama chose to make a ill-advised statement like that despite admitting up front he didn;t even know the facts. I would have preferred to see him apologize to the police dept for the remark, but with the press fanning the flames incessantly, it's probably better for him to walk away quickly and let it die down.

I don;t know how long Gates had lived in that house, but if he had been living there awhile, it seems odd that his neighbors had no idea who he was when they called the cops for breaking in.

Obama was correct in that the incident was a teaching moment. And that lesson is STFU at a national press conference until you learn the facts.

You're right, she never said they were black. But the police stated (and continue to assert) that she did.
