Well I talked to AMS, they said to send it their way and they will ship it over to Precision, Precision will cover it if it was a factory defect, if not they will contact me with a price to fix....

Heres some pics of it...

some black plasticish piece that feel out.. o.O

I guess one positive about all this is I found my exhaust leak... it was coming from the turbo flange... on the one stud side, so that means my manifold is straight!

I really hope this doesn't cost much.... and would like to know what caused it. The turbo spins fine vertically, its when you set it down horizontal it sounds like theres **** rattling around by the shaft/bearings.... ehh

Wow man. You have some _awesome_ luck..

Where did that piece fall out from exactly? Also, which turbo do you have? Precision ___?

I hope AMS will take care of it. They seem like alright guys.

At least we know you recycle the classified sections of your newspapers eh? Turbos, if name brand or not, can go bad prematurely in some perfect cases. My Full-Race T67 died within the first hour of run time. I've taken all the precautions before installing it, such as prime and check oil orifice and pressure. Since it was a journal bearing turbo, I ended up paying for the rebuild bearing/seal kit and did it myself (I have experience building and customizing my own turbos in the past). It cost me about $35 dollars, luckily it wasn't a ball bearing turbo eh? After that, the turbo lasted til this very day with no ill effects. I don't blame Full-Race for my problem as you shouldn't blame AMS. Sometimes a bad seed gets out of the bag and someone ends up planting it. If it happens two or three times in a row, then there's room to throw some questions out.

OH no, I'm not blaming AMS, or am I blaming anyone. I'm not sure how it would have been my fault though, so thats one thing I'm unsure of. AMS is a great company from what I have seen thus far for sure.

The plastic piece came out of the oil drain, it was in the housing? I have no idea... I pulled it out with a pair of needle nose.

Its a PTE gt35rl .68 a/r 3" v-banded t4 flange.

My buddy has a 35r on his evo, its a BR350 all Bushur built, and his 35r failed on him after about 600 miles or so. Bushur fixed it no problems. I'm not sure the cause for his, neither is he, they build it he pays lol.

Yeah, it was nice driving it everyday, rain or shine.

But... I am glad I caught the issue only half a day after it might have started.... It was their yesterday morning, but was in the evening, so it just started...

I don't know, I hope the turn around is quick and the price is minimal..... if anything at all.

Wow, nice slipped cam gear! Was it not tight enough, or was there some underlying problem with the gear?

Sucks about your turbo man. I am sure AMS will make it right.

Not tight enough, I guess the company doesn't torque them down from the factory? I bought 10mm head bolts to go with it anyways now, I can torque it better.

But as you can see I've moved on to a new issue lol. I hope your right.

0this is a GT30?

if so its #2 ive seen fail in 2 months. my friend had one that he had 200 miles on, sent back to prescision for inspectsion. then he got it back after the OK and it popped same way after 500 miles. bearings got noisy but he had been driving it to work when it started so it scraped up both housings.

fwiw, i wont ever buy a ball bearing turbo, they cost to much to fix when they fail.

Looks like I'm heading down Saturday Morning now, Seems like my valve cover right next to my downpipe was leaking the oil... not sure if was from a slight overfill, or my oil pressure being 65-70 while doing a pull, or from all the heat making the gasket weak.... But I tightened the piss out of the bolts for it, so hopefully it goes away...

Fixed the fuel pressure issue with the adpater, had to drive to the UPS store (25miles away) after the driver ****ed up which house to take it to. Mounted the AERO FPR on the shock tower now, tightened up a heater hose which I think might have been leaking...

I hate leaks.. :/ Makes me feel like my cars a POS.

Found out my Mckinnny Motor mount is starting to melt.... That could be bad. I Might need a solid puck of steel, you guy's know of Mack makes them? This one just cant handle the heat...

Temps are staying down now at about 175-180, I did a 5th gear pull yesterday, right at about 4-4100 she really was kicking in, and I let out. Thats 100-105 ish, but the pull was just growing and growing. Not to mention the car sounds like a damn fighter plane taking off. I cant even imagine at 18psi, more timing, and reving to 7800...

I'll keep you guys posted, the new clamping on the coupler seems to be staying!

EDIT: Lilskyline I'll have your Nismo unit out to you after class today. I'll

email you the tracking.
I will send you one Mack Mckinney

DUDE! thats EXACTLY, what mine was doing..... oh man.. I hope it was factory issue... ehh, its expensive **** to fix.

Turbo was shipped out on Thrus... I shall see.

Mack, I sent you my contact information. I am the guy (Cory) you spoke with the other day on the phone about the Alum mount. thanks again.

BUMP:...

got the call back from AMS, Precision is saying they will not cover it.

They state : "Bearing failure and foreign object damaged turbine blade(s)."

From the pictures I see no damage on the blades just the housings? Which suggest bearing failure, due to the shaft play.... Foreign object? Not sure what could have found its way through the small slits in the turbine to do enough damage to cause compete failure, and then small enough to not just blow an entire vain off....

Anyways heres the best part. They want $1250 yes $12 f*cking 50 to repair it + shipping...

Now it cost $1619... so I'm looking at a 300-350 dollar difference.....

Thoughts? opinions? I feel as if I'm about to get anal pounded by a gorilla here....

If you don't believe in the product they are carrying don't repair the turbo. Its worth that extra 300 in parts. Get something you trust.

IMO send that thing to an independent rebuilder and get a second opinion, and then submit it (if its different) to precision and threaten to raise holy hell if they don't help you out.

Thats a though Evan, I'm not sure if I trust their opinion or not I mean they are a HUGE company, but that doesn't mean they don't lie...

I suggested to AMS yesterday that I personally call Precision to get better/more detailed info, and he suggested against that. I'll ask him one more time and call Precision, I hate dealing with a middle man....

I just basically don't want to be ****ed over, my options are very limited here especially with having a t4 flange, its either I stay the same basically, or go a bit larger..

SP makes a nice 67mm BB turbo its about 1300, however I'm not sure on the response difference between the two. I was making very impressive numbers down low with this 35r version.... Would hate to loose the low end/street ability by switching to something larger like a 40r.. or a t04z

Another note, weather is amazing and my stupid car is down do to this issue, I'm missing out on event's and meets because of it...

I've got some choices to make, anyone want to buy a 1600 dollar paper weight? ha...

That's why I've always leaned towards the journal bearing turbos. They are easy to rebuild and cost a whole lot less then ball bearing versions. Warrantied or not, those things cost a LOT to repair to either party (vendor/customer). Hell, most of the time it isn't a repair for a ball bearing turbo. It ends up being an entire replacement of the center section. A journal version replica turbo spools around the same time as a ball bearing version. The main difference I notice is the transient response is quicker with a ball bearing turbo, and that's about it. It wasn't enough benefit to win me over based on reason. $1250 sounds like a brand new BB turbo.

So they don't cover bearing failure? WTF else can go wrong with a turbo?Obviously the "foreign object" was the housing itself.

Sounds to me like an insurance company telling a Floridian that their hurricane insurance doesn't cover water damage caused by flooding from the hurricane. It never would have flooded if there wasn't a hurricane.

I would trust using AMS as your middle man. They have no reason to take advantage of you and probably have a better working relationship and more leverage then you do.

Sucks though man, really sorry to hear what happened. I would send it out for a 2nd opinion though. Maybe you can get a quote to make a turbo from what you have left.

Evan

Dude, I don't see ANY turbine blade damage. Almost makes me wonder if it didn't get messed up in shipment somehow!

IMO, if they say Bearing failiure, and turbine damage you should offer to pay for the turbine wheel and they fix the bearing that clearly took a dump.

And for my millionth EDIT...

My turbine blades have seen way more debris then yours and it caused no failiure.

WOW dude, Reading your posts sounds like mine just with different things happening, We must have the same luck. Sounds like No matter wat your getting screwed. I would be talking to the company Personally about the turbo. Something there sounds like a middle man B.S I think he's trying to make some more money off you. But if end results means new turbo, Look into a different brand. Also make it plain, that you will spread the word and make them loose alot of money due to there product failing with hardly any use. There rep means more to them than anything. So over that much money, its worth fighting over.

The 35r is definitely more low end friendly then a T67. My Full-Race T67 that I have on my SR22 hit 19lbs@4800rpm like you just hit a 1000 shot NOS. Below that, I may see like 7lbs at around 3600rpm, and that's about as much excitement I'd ever see in my low end. With that said, the SR and RB is like apples and oranges. The RB is larger, especially yours lol. It should be able to spool the 67 at least 1k rpm sooner. It was a bit annoying to drive on at first because I had to downshift for any decent power, but as soon as I approached 5k, it became a fighter jet on wheels all the way to 9200rpm. The turbo grew on me to where I began to like it. Don't hit boost until you NEED to, it's great on gas (29mpg hwy!). I mean, how many other 500+whp cars owners can say they get good cruising gas mileage lol . I plan on reusing my T67 on my RB project. For one reason, it is because I like the turbo and don't need to spend extra. Second, it is 700hp capable! ^_^

Yeah, there was no visible damage on the wheel from what I saw. Turbo was wrapped in 2 t-shirts first, then packaged with about 5 full newspapers. Shaking it, it wouldn't even budge in packaging lol. Thats not it.

Matt no kidding, I mention something similar to him yesterday on the phone. He really had little to go off of, Precision provided him only (at least from what I was told) exactly what I wrote above.

Whats holding me back from going behind AMS's back to call PT, is fear of pissing them off.

I don't think I can barter with them on the wheels, I think they come pre-assembled/balanced/tested from garrett so there is no swapping parts, just housings.

That is one reason I want to talk to PT personally, because honestly AMS seems to know little to nothing about their operation. Not that its their fault, but I don't get answers I want.

Yeah I might call SP (Sound Performance) later this afternoon and ask about their 67mm, its only $935, and TONS of supra boys run it with good results.

If I go journal I'm gonna miss that awesome whine they make though

I get a nice whine until my external dump opens up. After that, all I hear is engine scream, tires squeeling, and a hint of turbo whine. I just don't get the rev down whine (when you let off the gas after boost).

Yep. The only time I did race gas (100 octane) was for 'dyno queen' numbers (633@25psi). I run at most 19psi on pump (511@19). If I track it, I leave it at 19psi but put at least a gallon of race gas to bump the octane up a little to be on the safe side of built up heat. This applies to when I course the car, drag I just line up and go and never look back with good ole 93. I make my power through rpm obviously. On the drag strip, I change my redline to 9500rpm, throw my stock springs and struts on the rears, then top it off with some MT drag slicks.

Gotcha, pretty good numbers for sure.

I talked to SP today about their turbo's. The 67mm is actually a precision turbo, but the rebuild is wayyy cheaper. Spool times in comparison between its BB counterpart are about 200-250rpms slower, but after that they are the same.

I've got some pricing and deciding to do, AMS is horrible at returning calls... still haven't heard back from him today....

I'll see what I end up doing, I really feel like there is a God preventing my car from ever moving... maybe I should listen?
