Nope increase, all other things being equal, because of greater rotational moment of inertia. Since larger rotors are almost always used with different calipers and pads with more swept area, this is not evident. But a heavier rotor with the same caliper and pads (say the Stillen rotors from Joe in stock size), should have a slightly longer distance to stop because of the increase in rotational mass, if the two separate applications, tires temperatures, road surface coefficient of friction, etc. are identical (which they never quite are ).

Long term, the heavier rotors should have less heat distortion resulting in shorter stops than the warped stocks at that time, assuming the unattainable theoretically equal operating conditions and histories.

Another troll thread, from max.. good job

XJR without Brembo brakes- 129 ft 60-0XJR with brembo brakes- 118ft 60-0

Same tires, same car, same everything...

Bigger better brakes= DECREASED stopping distance, rather it's 1 or 100 times.. I can't wait to do some 60-0 ft runs, when it's better then the 129 ft stock time, I'm sure you will come up with some convulted complete crap reason, why I came up with the numbers.

I understand the 300ZX calipers are aluminum, and the fronts have 4 pistons on the front, 2 on the inside, and 2 on the outside, while the rears have 2 pistons, one on the outside, and one on the inside.

We used to upgrade the standard Monte Carlo rotors, with the Corvette rotors. We went from 1 piston (like the Q), to 4 pistons, like the 300ZX. We had much better braking abiliy, with much less fade.

I am calling F1, to see if I can get some used calipers, cheaap, and see if they will work.

I posted a document, that offers adapters, for the 3000GT 12.5" rotors, on a 300ZX. I think the adapter would work on the Q, as well.

As soon as I get a chance to go to Georgia, I will stop at F1.

Let's not quibbel over theories, let's just see what is possible. Each of us have our own ideas, and probably want different things.

If we can save some money, by sharing ideas, much the better. That is what this site is about.

Here is a nice, and somewhat affordable front/rear big brake system for the 300zx..

http://www.arizonazcar.com/300zxbrakes.html

The fronts are 35m thick, nice..

The rears are only 21mm thick.. forget about the rears..

I have been searching the web also and found those brands also. StopTech apparently are better than the Brembos...at least that is what several M5 guys were saying on the message boards. I am really hoping for something like that 300zx setup...those Wilwood's are great for the price. I already emailed somebody about getting a setup for our Q's from the Wilwood website...I hope they respond. The price is much better also...still expensive when considering both front & rears, but it should do the trick. I am also interested in what Jeff has there on his end with the F1 stuff.

I have got to say that reducing a 60-0 from 129 to 118 is the big difference between accident versus no accident. Those extra 11 feet saved are huge. On the standard brakes..you are probably traveling at about 15mph at the 118 foot mark which would be one heck of an accident before you go to 0mph at 129 feet.

Are we assuming we can use a 300zx kit for our cars, with some modifications? If so, that really opens the door..

I like the willwood kit.. the rears arn't very thick, though.. I thought that was one of our main considerations. The fronts are real nice, and affordable.

Stoptech sounds awesome.

I believe the comment was the the deal on the fronts was good, but forget about the rears on the willwood deal. I think we all agree that a 4-piston caliper with a 32mm rotor thickness is our bottom line for the rear brake upgrade.

I think that willwood front system, is very fairly priced. Espically compared to the bremo/stop tech system. So maybe we could go with that, and a little mix and match for the rears?

yeah...I saw that one also a whopping $4,500. My max budget for a front & rear system would be $2,500 and that would have to be on pretty sweet setup. I am really hoping for something like $2,000 or less, but probably will not happen. I am in the wrong business...I should be making brake calipers. I mean look at them, I don't know much about them, but they have a lot less moving parts than an engine does and yet I can purchase a a very good used Q engine for around $2,500 that has a lot more or research & development into it....let alone all the moving parts. I just don't understand why something so small and just mechanical with no direct electronics costs so much.

that sounds like a good idea about sticking with at least a 4 piston 32mm thickness for both the front and rears. As Q45tech pointed out...the Q uses some very agressive rear braking force to bring the car to a stop compared with other cars so we can't forget about the rears. I hope there is a way to do a little mix & match.

RSI,

I couldn't agree more on the price... For the cost of one big brake system, I could get another used Q :(

So far it looks like the wilwood meets our sizing/price requirements (for the fronts at least)

I haven't seen anything for the rears.. unless we can do some custom rigging like the 3kgt jeff was mentioning..

Here are some websites I found and I think I emailed everyone of them to see what they could do for us.

http://www.precisionbrakescompany.com/index.asp

http://www.movit.de/htm/impala.htm

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...33564*** I emailed this guy to see if he could get us the Brembo's for the Q since it says that he can get them for other cars as well to see what his price would be. I think that brembo's have an agreement with all the retailers to sell the brakes at a specific price and that they can't go lower than a certain price because I keep seeing the same price no matter who is selling them for our car...all witin $100 of each other.

I have done some contacting as well.. Hopefully our tentaciles have reached far enough, to get something done... I'm not going to pay $2,600 for the F40 kit..

I'll stick with the skyline kit if I have to, I really hope wilwood can come through for us.. Great pricing and product.

Look at the Jaguar XJR.. Same brakes, same ABS system, Same tires

Bigger is not always better, it has to be done right.

All cars are designed with comprimises (keep in mind a Q45 has a helluva lot less comprimises than say a Cavalier) and you can address these comprimises with buckets of cash depending on what you want to do.

Want a supercharger? 10kWant better brakes? 2-4k

I've seen some pretty crappy "big rotor" (not counting disc simulators) kits marketed towards the ricer crowd, and without proper balancing and hydraulic pressure big brakes can increase stopping distance. As much as I love making fun of drum brakes, some cars showed longer stopping distances with aftermarket rear disc kits.

I agree, you can't make a blanket statement.

I will say, a Q45 with a nice big brake kit, that upgrades the front/rear WILL reduce stopping distances, 1 or 100 times..

I have got some info on the Wilwood systems from http://www.precisionbrakescompany.com/index.asp

Cost is about $1,350 per axle and inlcudes everything except for brake fluid.

This would be the following per axle at $1,350:

4 pistion calipers330mm or more diameter...they can go up to 16" for extra monies32mm or more thickness...they can go up to 35mm for extra moniesRotors cross drilled & slottedSS LinesABS CompatiblePadsBracketsAnd Everything else except brake fluid

They have never done a Q45 before, so what else is new, but what they do is charge you $500 per axle deposit and then they send out a kit that they think will work best and you try it out to see if it works. It is like a trial and error type of thing where they have all the parts, but they need you to try them out to see which ones work the best. After you find the kit that works best, you send back the kit and they send you the final product that includes everything and bill you for the difference. The wait time is about 6 to 8 weeks before you can get a kit to start the fitment process.

They are located in Asland, OR. If this brake company is worth persuing maybe we can have a NICO member visit them with their car to speed up this fitment process thing right there on the spot, then we can really see what will or will not work and get this thing moving. I would volunteer to do it, but I don't have any mechanical repair shop experience and I could not afford to pay a mechanic to keep trying different configurations.

At $1,350 per axle for the setup as described seems reasonable and all comes with a 1 year warranty on the products.

That is by far the best deal we will get on a big brake upgrade.

Nice job RSI

Ashland, OR. Sorry for the typo. I think that this is also probably our best bet right now. Now we can wait a week or two to see what others come up with and if nothing better shows up we will need to find a Q guy that can help us out who lives close to Ashland, OR.

I'm visiting real close to their, in a few weeks. Too bad I'm not driving :(

If we can't find anyone close to Ashland, what's our best bet? I definetely think these are the guys to go with.

they sound good, but I want to wait a week or two to see what others come up with and I just got an email reponse back from another brake source that referred me to somebody else who they think can help us. I am suppose to get my car back tomorrow....I can't wait.

Cool deal. Thanks for all the work, you've put in this. As long as we can come up with a big brake kit that meets our requirements and address front/rear, I don't care who it comes from. My hunch is it's going to be hard to beat the price from wilwood, unless someone does something custom that doesn't involve some massive braking companies products.
