Hey everyone,

I did a search and didnt really find much, but today i started my 2004 Pathfinder SE and the service engine soon light was on and the OD light flashed a few times. The truck does not really want to accelerate and does so veeeerrry slowly. I used my code scanner and came up with codes p2128 and p2138. does anyone have any experience with this? could this be related to the throttle position sensor?

Thanks
Rube

some google searching found that these codes are for the accelerator pedal position
P2138 Nissan - Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P2128 Nissan - Accelerator Pedal Position APP Sensor Circuit

has anyone ever had this issue? I'll check the plugs on the sensor by the gas pedal just to see if something worked its way loose. for whats it worth yesterday i swapped out 2 of the gauge illumination bulbs to LED bulbs yesterday but everything was working fine until this afternoon when the check engine light came on.

No personal experience, but the EC part of the FSM has sections for both of those codes that will give you some troubleshooting steps.

thanks for the link. I followed the troubleshooting steps and found that the Accelerator pedal position sensor 2 voltage is out of range (when accelerator pedal is fully depressed). the thing that sucks is you have to purchase the whole accelerator pedal assembly as the sensor isnt available separately. In any case, i ordered it and will report back.

today I replaced the accelerator pedal assembly with the integrated accelerator pedal position sensor. I reset the codes, performed the accelerator pedal and idle air volume learning and truck runs great and accelerates just fine.

On another note, the truck was sitting for 5 days without starting and when I started it today, they was all sorts of knocking and rattling sound for the first 10 or 15 seconds. Then after it ran and warmed up a bit it was perfectly quiet. At first I thought it may have sucked in one of the power valve screws, but then I remembered I had an 01 maxima and it did the same thing which I believe was the timing chain tensioners, anyone have any thoughts?

Glad to hear it's ship shape again!

What kind of oil filter and oil are you using? How old are they?

thanks for the tips!
I just picked up the truck. it has about 118k and there is a sticker from the Nissan dealer in the window which says its due for an oil change at 120k, so the oil and filter should be fairly new. it looks clean for whats it worth, although im not sure what the oil specs are. What weight oil and filter would you recommend on a pathy with 118k miles?

The rattling was probably because it was running without oil pressure for a little while. The first thing that came to mind was that the anti-drainback valve in the oil filter had failed. If that was the case, all of the oil stored in the engine would be allowed to run back through the filter and into the oil pan, meaning those passages would be empty on startup which would explain why it took a while for that oil to be re-primed. It could be due to other things, like oil weight and ambient temperature. As long as it doesn't happen again I wouldn't worry about it. Mine rattles for a second or two on startup but I hear it's not unusual for these engines. 10-15 seconds each time definitely would be though! If it does happen again, replace your oil filter pronto-like. You should be able to pull and replace just the filter without draining the oil. You'll just need to add a small amount of oil after you do.

We have a section on oil and oil filters in the General Information sticky. Basically, don't buy Fram :chuckle: Personally, I have 170k miles and use Mobil-1 high mileage synthetic 5w-30 oil and a microGreen filter because it has a dual-stage microfilter.

This thread has fluid recommendations from other members that's worth a read.

After re-reading this post, I'd recommend you don't use synthetic since you have an '04.

awesome thanks for all the info. i definitely still have alot of reading to do on this forum as there is a ton of useful info!
i bought the pathfinder as a second vehicle just to use to commute to work (its a short commute) for the terrible winters here in NYC (not to mention the traffic and horrendous roads)
I plan on just using conventional 5W30 with a Pure one oil filter with 3500-4000 mile oil change intervals.

If i start the pathfinder every day, its super quiet with zero noise on startup. It was just noticeable for a few seconds when i started it after sitting for 5 days.

next on the list:
install auto dimming mirror with homelink (picked one up on ebay for $20!)
get rid of the belt driven fan and replace with dual electric fan set up
tires
Any input would be greatly appreciated, but i will continue to search through the forum :dblthumb:

With homelink for $20? That is good! I got one of the older auto dimming Gentex mirrors for about the same price. Here's a thread on auto dimming mirrors that may be useful.

I'm considering doing the electric fan conversion next summer too. I don't ford many rivers and the space savings in the engine compartment and fuel savings are pretty tempting. Here's another thread on that subject!

Good luck with tires; the selection in our size is the slimmest of any vehicle I've driven :chuckle:

Keep us posted on how things go!
