Somebody in this forum mentioned they replaced their rear view mirror with an auto-dimming mirror from the i30...

I was just curious what was involved? Any wiring, drilling, etc.? Sounds like a great idea and was interested in it...

Thanks.

Hey that was me, install wasn't hard at all. The I30 rear view mirror was located on the actual winshield. I just removed the screws in the overhead console, removed the mirror assembly, and if you look closely, you will see a whole where the mirror connected into the overhead console. I pushed/put all the wiring into that compartment to conseal them from view. I then ran the wiring into the head liner to the drivers A-pillar. Run the wire to the ground bolt by the drivers foot rest. Next you have to tap into the wires under the steering column. Connect the wires accordingly to the wires that have constant power (i used a voltage meter) and then connect the wire to the reverse wire for the transmission, very helpful to turn the auto dimming feature off at night to reverse. Really easy. The longest and most annoying part, is having to hold the mirror on the winshield until the glue drys. Very simple. The install of mine looks clean and I have the dealers ask me where did I get the truck like that. Some people thought it was an option. Luckily i have a pic for you but the mirror looks really dirty lol!

Looks great!

Ya, a dimming feature would be nice... sweet that it automatically undims when in reverse..

I'll have to get onto some pick-n-pull lists and have them keep an eye open for a wrecked i30.

Thanks for the info!

Installed my mirror
1. Remove existing mirror.

2. Get Mirror Button ( In my case off old mirror) and Glue it to windshield.

ImageImage

3. Follow instructions and let button set for 15 min. ( Didn't feel like putting it over antenna)
Image

4. In the meantime wire it up. I used a Fuse tap hadn't heard of one but I'm Extremely satisfied with them!

Remove this panel

And push two wires down this Hole. (Note this is on the drivers side and that's the tweeter) Hint: Look up from fuse panel and you will see the wires you just put down. Image

5. Remove this panel by removing one screw (Note panel removed) and Loosen this ground ImageImage
Should look like this when done.

6. Pull a ignition controlled fuse and Plug it into the adapter. (I used the heatead seat fuse and used a 5 amp for the mirror)

7. Wire it up and Put panels back on Enjoy!

Damn, I gotta do this. I should've done this when I retrofitted the overhead console! Thanks for the write-up.

Are there any Nissan/Infiniti vehicles with auto-dimming mirrors that mount like the Pathfinder/QX4's mirrors? Or are they all affixed to the windshield?

For future reference and endeavors:

The mirror doesn't need to come from an Infiniti or even Nissan vehicle. There's a company called Gentex that makes these mirrors and they're used in pretty much every car out there. I used the same mirror that leeQX4 used, but got mine off eBay for about $20 and was from a Chevy Blazer. Go to eBay and just search for "auto dimming mirror" and you'll see what I mean. The model number for this one in particular is GNTX-187 Part #015306

Wiring it up is pretty simple and the same for all of their mirrors that use the 7-pin connector. In the case of auto-dimming and those with compasses, it's a matter of providing power and (optionally) a positive lead to the backup lights (the compass is built in!!). Note: if you don't wire it to the backup lamps, you'll need to link to the ground wire or it won't work properly.

I pilfered this from a post at http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/for ... p~TID~8560

GM wire harness color Function

PIN 1 PINK POWER +12 volts
PIN 2 BK CHASSIS, GND
PIN 3 LT GRN BACKUP LIGHTS
PIN 4 GY TO AUTO DIM OUTSIDE MIRROR
PIN 5 PINK TO AUTO DIM OUTSIDE MIRROR
PIN 6 DR GRN/WT TEMP PROBE
PIN 7 BK/WT TEMP PROBE

Auto-dimming with or without compass only uses the first 3 pins. 4 and 5 can be used for side dimming mirrors if you have them. The only requirement outside of that is a temp probe on 6 and 7 for those that have a thermometer built in. I can't speak to where those should go.

Gentex also makes a version with Homelink built in that I've seen on the Titans and Armadas (amongst others). They use a different connector, so different research will be needed.

I'm going to use the power from the compass built in to the overhead console for my mirror since it was right there, so we'll see how that fares.

Also, I cracked mine open (gentle but simple) and swapped the LED for an aqua 3mm from superbrightleds.com and used some hot glue in front of it to diffuse the light a bit.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

A compass update: I just installed the GNTX-177 mirror into my wife's 06 Camry, and just like the GNTX-187, it only needed the power wires (1 & 2).

I did have some fun calibrating it since it was stuck on SW when I installed it. If you're having a similar problem, turn the car on and hold down the Comp button. It'll blink off initially, then come back with a number (1-15). Letting go and hitting the Comp button will let you set the zone you reside in. Once you've done that, let it sit and it'll go back to the compass reading after 10 or so seconds.

Image

If you're tenacious and don't let go of the button down after the zone number displays (another 5 seconds or so), it'll switch to "C". This means it's in calibration mode. At this point you'll want to burn donuts in your neighbors front yard (while going about 5 mph, mind you). Once it has its bearings, it will switch back to the compass reading.
