2012 M5 Uses BMW Active Sound Design To Enhance Cabin Sound

According to BMW's press release:

M5 drivers will be given an even more direct reminder of their car’s performance capability by technology that brings the distinctive sound of the high-performance V8 – in all its glory – into the cabin of the new BMW M5. The Active Sound Design technology specially developed for the new BMW M5 takes its cues from the driving situation at any one time to deliver an accurate reproduction of the engine’s sound through the car’s audio system. The system’s digital signal processing exchanges data directly with the engine management, allowing it to reflect the engine’s revs and torque, and the car’s speed over the road. The result over a smoothly driven journey is a discreet soundtrack in keeping with the harmonious and assured characteristics of the V8 powerplant. A stamp on the accelerator, meanwhile, prompts an immediate audible response to match the instantaneous – and typically M – burst of power from beneath the bonnet.

In generating its signals, Active Sound Design takes its cues from the firing sequence of the eight-cylinder engine and the frequency range of the exhaust system. This gives the driver an extremely accurate impression of current engine load and an even more intense sensation of the V8’s high-performance characteristics. At the same time the Active Sound Design control unit ensures an even spread of sound across all five seats of the new BMW M5, while observing the legal guidelines governing noise emissions inside and outside the car. The characteristics of the sound produced by the technology also adjust to the engine settings selected by the driver. For example, switching to “Sport” or “Sport+” mode sharpens not only the engine’s responsiveness but also the acoustic experience inside the car.

What's next? Fake BOV sounds? FAIL. :inoutgay:

Can't they just pay some semblance of attention and maybe look at the tach from time to time?

One more reason I'm an M3 guy. No sound reproduction required.

I take no issue with wanting to hear more of your car's already-good engine noises. But it seems to me when we've reached the point that has us looking to outwit our cabin sound deadening, we should probably take a few steps BACK before moving forward again.

The fact that the only place to find a hot V8 anymore is in pricey luxury cars is half the problem. Just...a THEORY...but perhaps the best way to stop isolating the driver from the driving experience is to stop TRYING TO ISOLATE THE DRIVER FROM THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE. Last I checked, the M5 doesn't have Lexus emblems on it. Seems to me the problem solves itself.

I don't have an issue with allowing the cars engine sound to be heard inside the car when the drivers wants it ... even if it has to be replicated by the audio system. I do find it some what ridiculous when similar technology is used in a hybrid to create engine sounds.

I recall reading something similar about the Lexus CT 200h ...

Wow total fail on BMW's part.

While the new M5 is cruizing down the road in their cabin mimicking fake blow off valve noises along with audio recorded sounds of a motor i'll be driving by in my Z with my 3" dump pipes off EACH turbo. FTMFW!!!!

why don't they design a performance exhaust that you can hear inside the car, instead of wasting all of that money.

This is pretty sad to me. I would have no part in a car that has fake engine noises pumped into the cabin. I love the look of the new M5, but I am in no way interested in driving one now.

I'm waiting for this feature to come in hybrids.
Then you can drive your Prius pretending it's powered by an extremely slow V12.

BMW thinks they're on to something huh? They're late to the party.

My 240 has this from the factory! Nissan cleverly hid the switch to turn the function on, but it works great!

So when you blow a piston or start misfiring, does it pump that noise into the interior, or does it give you the "everything is A-OK" engine noise?
Sounds like it'll be pumping in A-OK noises. I can see it now:
"Ma'm, why did you wait so long to bring your car in? Its now running on only 3 cylinders!"
"It sounded fine to me... just lacking some power"

All that and maybe a nice titanium exhaust from Akrapovic. No speakers needed then.

f*** right!! :werd:
The whole M badge icon is that you're buying a balls-out performance model, anyone complaining about "engine noise" needs to buy a Lexus Deadbox. Argh.
I just can't believe they put so much sound deadening in it that they "needed" to do this. Shouldn't it be stripped of sound deadening and be mildly abrasive to passengers? :P

^ Exactly. It's just retarded ricer bullcrap.

BTW, C&D completely bagged on the new 5-series... badly.

BMW can suck it. There's nothing in their lineup worth the sticker price anymore.

I have a very similar feature in my car, a buddy club spec II exhaust and the bare minimum factory sound deadening that nissan put in 240's in 97. I hear everything, and by everything I mean only the exhaust note of a screaming sr.
