Off topic a bit but loving your M37. I believe florida fine cars had your old M for sale. How about dipping the grille also? It looks easier to do, simple lines.

After 3-4 different designs and removals, I've reached what I think is the perfect combination of chrome and plasti-dip for the front grille. First I did the entire grille and the hood trim - too much. Then I did just the entire grille and left the hood trim chrome - getting warmer, but no. Then I decided on leaving the hood chrome and the bottom trim in chrome to help frame the grille - getting VERY warm, but no. Finally, I left the hood trim, the bottom trim, the emblem AND the little chrome nipples. The nipples react well in the sun and make a nice pointy shine - I thinks it's perfect. What are your thoughts?

Thank you.
No glossifier - just 6 coats of black. Thats just how it reacts to strong sunlight. I tried glossifier and also pearlizer on previous versions. With the design of the grille (L to R small bars instead of a large flat surface) the sun reflection made it look a bit funky in my opinion.

@Larz: did you remove the grill from the car, or cover up the engine bay and spray with it on?

I was going to remove the grille, but decided to try without doing that. I placed some cardboard between the rear of the grille to protect the radiotor, etc, then used painter's tape and newspaper to make a 1-inch border around the entire grille - paper going all the way from the grille around to the fender wells on each side, and paper going from the bottom of the grille to the bottom of the bumper, and opened the hood, laying paper across the engine bay back about a foot in from the front. (did it outside and didn't want overspray to land anywhere and paper and tape are pennies).

Long as you leave an inch of body surface around the grille and cover that border each time you cross the grille, and wait about 10min between each coat, you will do fine. I didn't do a pic with the car masked, but i just ran out to the driveway just now and laid tape out to duplicate the border I used. If you want to leave the chrome nipples like I did on my grille, just run some painter's tape across them but be sure the tape covers ONLY the tips by folding the tape in on itself in the spaces between the nipples and make sure you cover that area with dip completely with each pass over the grille, using different angles of spray on each pass.

After the 6th coat (usually they say 4 but the grille gets pelted with dirt, bugs, and rain so I wanted it to be thick) leave it to dry completely (I waited overnight). Make sure you get good coverage around the emblem and also around the border on the surface of the car so you have a nice thick edge to begin peeling with. Roll up the dip that's on the body until you can get a finger under it - keep peeling it off SLOWLY and the plastidip will automatically 'cut' itself around the grille. Do the same for the front emblem - roll one edge of the emblem until you get your finger under it, and it will automatically 'cut' where the emblem stops and the grille begins (any surface that isn't one contiguous piece will cause the dip to 'cut' around it as you peel).

For more info, check out my mate, Fonzie at http://www.dipyoucar.com - he also has a you tube channel and this is a video of how to properly use plastidip on grilles, emblems, and lettering. Duplicate his technique for peeling and you'll see just how easy this stuff is to work with:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8Gfd46AxLw

Hope this helps! Everyone who compliments my grille gets his info - He has everything you need and at low prices with quick shipping.

PS: If you wanna be really posh with this stuff, use The Wall Street Journal for your paper trims, LOL

Hey, thanks for all of the info. I actually did my grill just the same as yours. I couldn't get the thing off after trying for half an hour, so I just decided to mask the radiator (etc.) and work that way.

I suggest you check out a site called Dip Your Car. Fonzie is very creative when it comes to dipping wheels.

Here are two examples:

Wow ! what a transformation! Looks great! Have you considered doing the roof in black or adding glossifier over the white?

Plastidips the shiznit! In about 3 weeks ill be doing a pearl white vinyl wrap of the entire car except for the roof. The roof will be a carbon fibre wrap. The stock 18" will be plastidipped black with glossifier. Ill post pics once its done. Saw a YouTube of a guy that did the dip on his wheels and you don't have to mask off the tires. Just spray 4 coats, let dry and peal the tire areas right off. Can't wait. I would do everything sooner but my sign shop buddy that's wrapping the car is away till July. Oh and price hookup is amazing. I pay him $600 for the vinyl and the installer charges $500.

Looks awesome. Very curious as to how long it will remain clean and how you end us cleaning it. Would you mind keeping us posted? Great job.

Thanks ill post in about 2 weks supposedly thats how long it takes to dry completely. Should be pain to keep it clean but i always wanted white car. I might put another 2 gallons of dip on it (67$) gray showing up in some places after 4 gallons. Still looks amazing to me.

There is a kit you can get from the dip your car website. Fonzie sells a concentrate and a foaming lance kit that most peeps use on their dipped cars. No scrubbing needed. Just foam and rinse. In fact it also works great on cars without dip - best part is that it's a 'no hands' wash - no contact with mits, rags, etc that could make swirlmarks from washing by hand. I use it on all 3 cars and it's brilliant. Here is Fonzie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inHYo72DC7Y

You need a pressure washer to use this kit, but lots of peeps already have one. Mine was bought to clean the keystone patio but I use it for the house windows and for tons of other jobs. If you don't own one, just go to one of those wash places with the pressure hoses - or even an automatic car wash. The dip (if done correctly) is very durable as seen below:

I've heard that after a while of having it on the paint, it will mess with the clear coat...let me know how it goes after a few months
