Pirelli P7 plus 225/65/R17 Feathering issue

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hi gents,

I know there are couple topics created by me lately but problem comes after problem. One more issue pop up with my lovely ex35 :( :(

Last June have gotten brand new Pirelli P 7 plus All season tires. After 1y of driving, noticed loud noise while turning left and right or when slowing down.
At first though it is a wheel bearing. Drew my beauty to mech and checked wheel bearings, suspensions and all looks fine. After the test drive, mech came up with the tires issue. (check pictures below)

The Feathering is visible on outside and inside edge grips, nothing in the middle of the tire, and it's on all 4 tires. Rotations were done front to rear only.
Called Pirelli about warranty as for P7 Plus All season, warranty covers up to 65k miles. (mine have only 35-40k km). Has anyone came across this issue with EX35 and was it able to be covered under warranty?

Thanks to everyone for any reply/advice.

I have had the P6 plus on my EX for over 50K with no issues. Those look like my Michelins did on my RDX after a short amount of time

Did you have to buy new tires or you could drive those ones? By any chance, warranty covered this abnormalities or?

I could drive still. Couldn't feel or hear anything, but definitely wore like that and fast. Their life was short, like 30K.

Ok, have an update on this,

unfortunately Pirelli didn't accept the warranty on the tires. was told that have come from wrong alignment which I will check after I change a front wheel bearing.

I've been told that since the suspension on these cars is not setup as a "true" sports car (i.e., front camber is fairly neutral), if you tend to take corners somewhat aggressively will result in the outer edges of the front wearing, more specifically "feathering" as you've shown. My P7's are doing the exact same thing...and I am obsessive about my alignment, and have no front wheel bearing issues.

I've asked around whether any front camber kits exist for these cars, but have yet to find one.

As a retired mechanic who specialized in alignments and front end I would say you need an alignment. As with all trades you need to have it done by someone going the extra bit and willing to put the car right on the marks with a very good machine.I experienced the same issue to have it resolved by a newer /more accurate alignment machine and putting all adjustments eactly on the marks not just in the green zone.

Mozart72,

thanks for the reply. that is really helpful as Im planing to buy a new set of tires (these ones are almost finished) and wouldn't like that to happen to a new ones as well. I wish you haven't retired and you live in Toronto :)))

I would recommend reading these posts:
tires-t514813-30.html#p5983434
tire-noise-t433010.html#p5144724

There were a couple of major points that i thought SteveTheTech was trying to make.
-yearly alignments
-changing the rotation direction of at least the front tires (X rotation pattern was recommended).
-not driving "spiritedly" as often.
-premium tire brands

He also mentioned using tires with asymmetric tread patterns, but i found what works best for me is making sure that the tires get rotated to opposite sides of the vehicle. Both sets of Michelins I've had on this car didn't have much of the heel-toe wear at all. I always made sure to cross rotate them. On the Hondas that I've had in the past, they've had more noticeable heel-toe wear. But Honda's recommended rotation pattern involved crossing the back tires when moving them to the front, so that type of wear was minimized.

So at the minimum, I would say to look at getting a non-directional tire and make sure they get rotated to both sides of the car. Following the other tips he posted should help as well.
