Tires

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I've noticed that all of tires at 5000 were starting to feather out on the outside of the tread. I rotate the tires at 6000. It is getting worse. I can actually hear them whining at speeds from 10 to 25 MPH. The tires are Dunlops. I can feel & see the uneven wear. Anybody else have this issue? If so was taking it back to the dealer a waste of time? Thank you.
Tires wearing on the outside edge is typically indicative of a toe adjustment that is out of specification....However the 18" tires on the EX are notoriously noisy tires.

The manual does detail a front to rear rotation at an every other oil change interval but even with the best maintenance these tires can become noisy even with perfect maintenance.

If I were you I would start with getting an alignment covered under your 12/12 adjustments warranty. This will not reduce or resolve the wear that had already occurred to these tires but it might help curb future wear. Although in all honesty they really only get a a certain point and stay that way for the remainder of the tread life.

The best advise I can give you is to get your EX aligned yearly and rotate the tires in a X pattern. The most important thing is to change the direction of the tires that are being rotated FROM the front. This is something we have been doing for years to try to counter this type of wear.

I see this type of wear fairly frequently in lower grade tires and tires with large tread blocks on the edges of the tread.

These are the OE Dunlops

You can see on the right side of the image the outside edge has modestly large tread blocks. Using the image below picture the vehicle traveling along the black lines, as speed increased the wheels start to move toward the toe out side this causes the front wheels to alter the contact surface with the road increasing heat and wear on the front tires. This is a natural habit in all vehicles. Most of the time there is no resulting wear but the combination of suspension geometry and weight distribution in the EX make it able to trash a set of tire in a few thousand miles.

That is what you need.
Note the difference in tread pattern.

It's probably the crappy Dunlop 18's.. the Michelin 17" were and are a better quality tire.[/quote]

It seems to be the price of vanity.

Not in the least. They are...fair to meh tires. Nankang are some poor tires. If you think the S7000s wore poorly stay far away from anything Kumho or Yokohama. These tires all have a place they may excell at but you need big highline sedan tires.

I too wish business worked that way. People would make poor choices though. They would probably make more of a financially based decision than the company.

Infiniti has a long history of dealing with tire noises better than most of the competition.
When the 2004 G35 Coupe Sport came out it had 225/40/18 Michellin Pilot Sport (1st gen) on the front and they were the worst tires possible for that car. They were featheredging at a rate that basically meant the car drove on the sidewalls. This was a byproduct of wheel diameter, caster, and weight...much like the EX. Although the coupes concerns are still there on the ones out there today the newer models have been adjusted accordingly and we do not really see nearly as many issues in the coupes.

This is why most newer models have different luxury touring and sport packages. You now get to choose beauty or comfort based. Personally I would keep the smaller wheels on my next car, which would either be an FX or an M....at least that is what I keep telling myself.

I'd also be curious to know how well or badly the softer Winter tires are wearing, when one drives their EX35 on a lot of dry paved Roads in between Snow-falls?

If all they've been doing is Front to Back and Back to Front, then hopefully they too are reading this latest tidbit.

When the Owners Manual says Front to Back and Back to Front... and you guys are saying they should be done in a "X" Pattern, then somebody should correcting this little mistake in the Book.

Steve, thanks for replying to this Thread.

Sometimes the tires are directional, as are my Nokians, so a front to back is the only way to go.

So maybe on a EX35, one should only buy non-directional Tires. :facepalm2

I'm due for new Tires this coming Summer/Winter... so this is timely information.

Unless you have some old Firestone G70's, front to rear and rear to front is the correct rotation for non-directional tires.

However, as previously mentioned, on a EX35, it's better to do cross-rotation on non-directional Tires.

I forgot to mention in the post above, my Infiniti dealer strongly recommended: DO NOT purchase directional tires for the EX!

Got my Yokohma's....AVID ENVigor (Ultra High Performance All-Season)...I went one size wider...235 and have 18" wheels. Loved the tread pattern too!

WOW...holy crap...it's a whole different car! I heard my exhaust for the first time...those Dunlap POS had 35,000 on them and I sounded like a Big Foot the giant mudder coming down the road...they were so freakin LOUD.

Check them out...did lot's of research...45,000 mile tires...and great ratings when you compare ALL factors.

They are awesome in the rain...and can't wait to see how they do in our lovely winters...well, I guess I can wait now that I think about it :chuckle
