heh, i'm getting pretty good at getting to that annoying filter, but anyway, has anyone here thought of installing a bypass filter in a Q? amsoil makes one for like $140 if i can remember correctly. the guys over at bobistheoilguy make them sound like the messia of oil filtration. anyone have any thoughts on this?

Let me share my setup with you guys.

I relocated the battery to the trunk. Then I bought the Perma-Cool kit and relocated the oil filter to the spot where the battery used to be.

I also installed an oil cooler. It is similar to the kind mentioned by AZHitman. It is an extruded aluminum transmission cooler with 1/2 inch ports. This is the kind that is made for Hot Rods with limited space.

I mounted it inside my bumper re-inforcement. It fits perfect. I drilled some big holes on the bottom of the re-inforcement and a row of smaller holes on the top.

The area under the bumper reinforcement is a high pressure area. This is where the air for the radiator and condenser enters. So, the cooler works real well at this location and it is out of harms way, e.g. road debris.

I chose the frame rail cooler because it is straight through and therefore has the lowest pressure drop.

Also, with the oil filter at its new location, oil changes have become so much easier.

After looking under the hood, the only free space seems to be right next to the air filter.

I'm surprised that filter re-location is not more of a mod around here as it is a rather tight accesss to get to the filter. Especially so in my 94a.

How about on the driver's side frame rail-underneath the small plastic splash guard. I have an Amsoil kit with the large bypass filter and a Ford truck filter and it looks like it would fit ok.

That's where mine is, I removed the AF box "chambers" and relocated the EVAP back about 2" or so and up to the ledge with the air box. So it's just behind the left radiator tank. I used Parker Hi-Temp Push-Lok 250 psi 1/2" hose. Just added a oil pressure gauge.Sorry no pics yet, will buy a camera this week.

I'm surprised too. It's almost the first thing I did. Front suspension was wiped out, previous owner got a quote and ran screaming away. I used to own an oil change business and got real sick of nightmare oil filter positions.

I was searching and found this link for a oil relocation kit. Does this only apply to the earlier Q's? I found these GReddy kits and not sure which one would work on a 97 Q. Universal (Toyota / Nissan) Part #: 12003001 orUniversal (3/4 x 16 UNF)Fits most Toyota and Nissan applications Part #: 12004900

Both are from the SCO website, anyone have any info about this install? This is one that I would do a write-up on with photos. I currently have to use the fan like a revolving door to get to the filter them muscle it off. This relocation would make life so much easier.

From a thread about remote oil filters.Just to finish explaining my setup: I used a Wix 24762 Remote Mount Kit, the threads are 3/4"-16 which lets me use a Wix 51562 W/ Drainback valve and bypassDims:OAL 5.842" Dia:2.95" Originally for use on Nissan diesel cars/trucks(81 - 86) The original threads on a Q are the same : 3/4"-16[/quote]Not sure if this helps at all, but I felt it was worth a repost in a thread on remote oil filters.

Yeah I saw the prior post, did by chance ever get a chance to take any pictures of the setup? That would probably help out a bit. If you could I would appreciate it, I'm not sure how different the engine compartments are between the years.

One top down view here, somehow the comp. ate the others I took and I haven't had it apart since.

Looks like I'll have to install it alittle differently due to different engine compartments. Is there a "must do" reason for the pressure gauge or is that optional?

I hate to rely solely on idiot lights, so I installed a mechanical gauge. It was a breeze since all I had to do was tap a fitting into the housing.Helps me keep an eye on what the pressure really is.

think wes was referring to the oil pressure gauge! mechanical gauge would be dangerous to install in cabin if oil line ruptured, electrical one would be fine

I did this on my first supercar ...a 1977 Vega. Dropped in a hyped Buick V-6 (long story) and had the mechanical oil pressure gauge in the dash, I thought it was cool to run really high oil pressure since it was so easy to turn out the big cap and stick in a different relief spring. I'm driving along at about 90 PSI and the flattened copper coil with the soldered end decides it can't take it anymore and sprays oil out of the dash. Too bad I was wearing my Joe Cool all-white outfit (it was the early 80's) on my way to some date or something "important". Good reason not to...

That thing really was fast though...
