PPIHC, you say? Planning on bringing the flat black with ya? Or are you crewin' for me?
Thanks.

Just crewing, I think i would lose so much power from elevation change, that there wouldnt be enough left at the top to move the car. I needs a new engine.

So I got the first batch of in car video uploaded. I am doing it in reverse becuase that is how I loaded it from the camera. There isn't enough room on my harddrive for all of it.

Special Stage 17, Herman 2. The last stage of the event. The start crew talked me into a full RPM launch. Couple of small kicks. By far Herman was my favorite stage of the event.

Special Stage 16, Arvon Tower 2. I liked the Arvon tower stages almost as much as Herman. Some very fast sections, and a very unforgiving kick that cause a car to roll earlier in the day. I have video of the roll aftermath, we were the first car on scene. This particular jump/kick has produced some pretty sweet pictures, but I have yet to find any of the 240.

Special Stage 15, Baraga Plains 2. Similar to Arvon Tower, but for reasons I cannot explain, I didnt like it as much as Arvon or Herman. Although that is like saying I like tropical skittles more then berry skittles. I still love skittles.

It took pretty much the whole day while I was at work for these to uplaod, so I will set up a bunch more before going to bed. Stay tuned. I still have the dash cam, and I need to figure out how to do picture in picture with the ones I have both angles on. The dash cam vids are not as high quality, and they have no sound, but are still fun to watch, it makes it look like you are going super fast.

More in Car.

This is the first run through of Herman, SS13. You may notice a gap in the numbers. SS14, Menge Creek 2 had to be transited due to comm radio failure.
I <3 Herman

Special Stage 12 Arvon Tower. The first run of the Arvon stage. The notorious kick took its only real victim of the weekend. Car #841, a VW golf, lost control from the jump, and rolled on stage. We were first car on scene, and luckily a course marshal was able to wave us down before we hit the kick at WOT. They gave us the OK to continue. Had they show the red cross, the stage would have shut down.

Luckily for them, once they had a moment to reorient themselves, they pulled out their tow strap and had another competitor pull them back over. They completed the stage, and the rally.

Special Stage 11, Baraga Plains. First thing you may notice about this stage is when I turn the camera on. I forgot to, and was forced to turn it one once the stage was started, oops.

More video coming.

So, I set a couple more videos to upload while I was at work, and wouldn't you know it, my computer decided to epic fail all day. Try again tonight.

Back to researching new suspension.

Couldnt get resin to harden tight against the can. It would always shrink a little, and leave the can krinkly. It bugged me. Currently I have the 4WD shift knob from my truck. We survived LSPR, so Im keeping it, its good luck now. (I am superstitious about shift knobs)

Ok, here is the last forward facing in car vid from Saturday. I still have Friday stuff that turned out, as well as the dash cam to figure out. It has no sound, so I think I will link up the sound track from the other cam to it. Anyone know a linux based HD video editor that will allow me to do picture in picture?

Special Stage 10, Menge Creek. I liked this stage, and was sad we only got to run it once, (due to comm failure), but it was kind of a tricky stage. It was the first stage of the day, and there were a few very slick wet spots that kept me on my toes. The other notable thing about this stage is a slight horn malfunction. Chris Greenhouse (another competitor) blew his motor and was pulled over on the stage. As we passed I blipped the horn at him, and it decided to stay on. It took a while before I talked dexter into ripping the button out. I couldnt get it, because my gloved hands couldn't grip the edge of the button.

Sweet action at 6:25ish! It's about the only time you can actually tell I did something useful. LOL It's weird watching in-car rally video without hearing a co-driver. You should figure out how to integrate the intercom to the video somehow... Not that I'd want to hear myself (like I said, I hate the sound of my own voice), but it gives it a more authentic rally vibe.

Thanks again, Ian.

They DNF'd on Friday due to a failed alternator, but came back for an awesome finish on Saturday. Hopefully Chris will pop in here to talk about how awesome of a weekend he had.
Good friends, good weather (always good when you're in da U.P., eh?) and good roads. We were just focusing on learning AWD (my first time driving all 4 wheels), communicating notes, and having a good time. After hitting a "bump" on stage two (see fig. 1: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=274203025935734) that threw our alignment off for the remaining 14 stages and forced us to use tires that were not matching OR facing the right direction, we decided to have even MORE fun learning to use our car to its maximum potential while bringing it back in one piece. Despite the alternator failure on day 1 and the continued decline in our car's performance, we don't want anything else but to get out and do it all again.

*edit: BTW Ian, you charged me in your last article with telling MY story. I am now hard at work on that, and it may take some time, but it will be so...

Trust me, your notes were useful. I would have ditched her hard way too many times on all those decreasing radius corners.

I plan to pick up a small digital audio recorder. The intercom has an output, and I can just plug into that, and mesh the audio track with the video track later.

No thank you.

Darn right sir. Glad I wasn't the only one dealing with a car with drastically decreasing performance.

Now if only we could get Jenny on here to extrapolate her thoughts, we would have things from all angles.

So I finally gave the old girl a much needed bath today. I found so much mud.

Rally is a dirty sport, dont let anyone tell you different.

This a rough pile of the dirt that came off the car. There is still a tone stock in my driveway, and I know I didnt get everything off the car.

Car all washed up, now time to clean the garage.

Ready for the overhaul.

Even though I am pulling the motor, she will still sit until January, so I fogged the engine before shutting her down. Smoke didnt show up well in the picture.

That was my day, but got some exciting news tonight. Sno Drift may be a Max Attach event for 2012, and if that is the case, Finnish Fury Rallysport and car #240 will be there. After a horrible experience a few years ago, SnoDrift is an event I vowed never to return to (servicing, no tools, no heat, volkswagon, no sleep, volkswagon), but with it being home territory for Dexter, and the SubaRoots crew, I think I might have to suck it up, and brave the cold. Time to start stocking up on Blizzaks.

2012 is going to be exciting.

Come on! What could be more Finnish than a winter rally?!

I have crew that is battle proven at Sno*Drift as well - one of whom is a fellow Niconaut and knows S13's inside out.

Oh yes, and I have one word for your tires: TRACTIONIZER

I know I know.

Knowing S13s is only slightly helpful when my car has been turned inside out, and everything is backwards. In other news, I might be picking up an S13 Vert to pull the engine out of, we shall see.

Thats my other big gripe about sno drift, I have to go out and spend $500 on tires for one event, plus tubes for all of them, and then I have to get them all tractionized, which means they will be useless after the event. Eh, whatever, I think it will be worth it. Only if its Max Attach though. If its not, I might just save my rupples for 100AW.

Only 2 solid in car vids from Friday are uploading as we speak. Should be able to post them tomorrow. Then I get to delve into the dash cam videos. The dashcam stuff looks really cool, but sucks without sound. Hopefully I can get that figured out.

Need to get a new furnace for the house this week, but hopefully I can find a few minutes to start pulling the engine out of the race car.

You'll just have to trust me, he's good. He and another friend volunteered to crew for you at Sno*Drift before I could tell them you weren't interested in going. If you decide to go and need the help, they're willing. They'll probably be there regardless.

They'll be good for the next year and any other wintery events you might like to do. See if you can find some used. There's always tons of them laying around at Sno*Drift all ready tractionized. Someone probably has a set they're willing to part with. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

As close as we were at LSPR, we might have a chance at some cash if they do SnoAttack again. I'm pretty sure they did it last year.

Good to hear, if we need the help, I'll let you know. After Friday night, Im surprised my crew still talks to me, so we will see if they do another event......

I think I will pick up 6 new tires and tubes then. If we need more, we can cross that bridge when we come to it. Its not really worth it for me to buy used, when I get 50% off new. Although if you see a smokin deal on Blizzaks of Hak's, let me know. For now though, I need to focus on getting the new motor built, all the tires in the world wont help if the block ventilates itself.

Stupid youtube, video uploads failed.

Ian,

It would be an awesome privilege to crew for you if you do ever need any help. I would of been at LSPR, but I was in Arizona at the time of the event. You could say I have a little experience with S chassis and working on them under pressure.

You must be the one who Dexter speaks of. You would surely be welcome on the team. I have a feeling we might need the help anyway, the crew took a beating at LSPR, and they may never forgive me.

Last 2 stages of forward facing in car are finally up. Something was goofy with the file and Youtube didnt like it. The others were all raw as well, so I dont know what was different. Now I can get to work on the dash cam.

Special Stage 03, Beacon Hill. This is the only stage of the weekend we were scheduled to run once, and I am glad of it. Running this stage was absolutely terrifying. Just keeping the car straight was a handful and a half, even at as little as 1/4 throttle. I was passed by a subaru, and it looked like he was even having traction issues. I have never experienced road surface like this, the car refused to respond to any normal input. There wasnt enough traction to shift the weight, and my overly stiff suspension wasn't helping.

Special Stage 02, Green Acres 2. Here is the second run through of the Moyle Gravel pit stage. This stage is pretty rough, and there is often lots of loose shale. Its hard on cars, and especially on tires. I was taking it pretty easy, because I didn't want to wreck before running any real stages. We mainly run the gravel pit stages because they have some great viewing spots, and easy access for spectators.

I really wanted to swap to a stock filter box, but always had other things to do. and you are right, it very well could be a moot point soon.

Yeah, I am. I have crewed alongside Dex for a team from Canada called Clearcut Racing that ran a WRX at Sno Drift one year. I am also well diversed with S13s and many other Nissans. I have forgotten more than a lot of people know. Haha. Are you going to Sno Drift? I will plan on getting it off work if you are to help out.
