This thread is just for my amusement,I've had two run-ins with off duty cops.

1. I got cutoff by a truck and honked and my friends flipped off the truck. Next thing i know some SUV driven by a woman gets next to me and the passenger flashes his badge. We pull up to a light, they are turning left I'm going straight, and he says "What you just did was illegal and I could take you to jail right now!" I was like "Sorry man..." then he turned and we flipped him off and held the horn. They just kept going.

2. I was behind my friend at a light, right after school, and a whole bunch of fellow students are honking and revving and whatnot(for the hell of it)...the light goes and my friend takes off fast so I follow....not full on, but a little aggressive.... then I let off the gas at speed, when a red chevy lumina gets next to me and I look over to see a guy holding a badge out the window and staring/saying something to me...while moving down the road.....I just look forward and think..."he cant do ****"....so I speed up and keep my eyes averted, and about a mile down I take a quick turn but he doesnt follow...

Anyone else have run-ins with the police when they aren't in "full power"?

Lol brave mofo. I haven't had any run-ins with off duty po's, but I have had some with undercover ones...and they don't normally do s*** unless you're doing something blatantly wrong.

my friend told me it's not illegal to honk randomly, so for fun we just honk all the time when there are cops around... lol they don't do anything....and when they look our way we just wave and smile.

I don't believe that off-duty cops can do anything to you when they are off-duty. However, they have every right to call on-duty cops to come and take care of you, and of course, they will believe the off-duty cops story, especially if this is his jurisdiction.

Not to say the guy wasn't being a complete a-hole, but he's right. He could have arrested you right there, on-duty or not. The guy you flipped off could have done the same thing. Constitutionally a citizen has more rights when making arrests than a cop does. Scary thought.:tisk:

It can be construed as assault. You have liberals to thank for that. :rolleyes

Your freedom of speech must not come to a point where it can cause trouble. Flipping off a guy in a car may just as well cause him to get pissed off and start hitting people...the person who flipped him off included. This creates a clear and present danger;). Retarded...but true.

I was cooking along at about 15-20mph's over the speed limit and I had an off duty cop in a beretta hold up a badge to the window. He was trying to get infront of me and slow down but I kept changing lanes when he'd get infront of me. We were near an off ramp so I took it, and went to a local mall an chilled there for a couple of hours. It scared the bajezzus out of me! But it was a rented car, I was 2 states away from where I live, and I never got a ticket so I don't worry about it.

Here in AZ its supposedly illegal to honk unless it is an "emergeny situation". My dare officer a couple years back told us that one time a guy flipped him and his partner off but they couldn't do anything, so they followed him and the guy honked his horn for no reason and they pulled him over and gave him a ticket. Of course I've witnessed cops lying, so who knows if there is any truth to that story.

Off-duty PD has the same authority as on-duy, and can effect an arrest. Most choose not to because of some kid being a PIA.

crx, don't be a turd. :D

Hmm, even if they had the same power off-duty, id assume they arent allowed to pursue me. (too dangerous) I also do realize the whole calling a on-duty cop thing....but that just means I gotta relocate pretty quick. About being a terd, I am one from time to time, but come on, no need to flash your badge over some innocent honkin...I am *usually* nice to regular motorists...;)

Not exactly. I believe for traffic citations, they actually have to be identifiable as a cop and in plain visible sight. And out of uniform and in a civilian car, they can't enforce a traffic stop. I'd ignore that if it happened to me. Unless he gets a patrol car to pull me over, I'm not stopping. Reasonably, you can contend that you've heard stories of imposter cops commiting crimes after pulling a person over. But an off-duty officer can still make an arrest just the same as any citizen(Citizen's Arrest). I doubt they can do that unless it's the type of charge where an arrest would be effected though.

No way in hell would i pull over for someone that wasnt obviously law-enforcement. What keeps a regular person from getting a 'badge' pulling people over and shooting them in the face? or stealing there car? AFAIK, In PA you have the right to call the PD if you have an under-cover pulling you over, to ensure that is a real cop.

I saw on america's most wanted a guy pulled over a lady by flashing his badge, but it wasnt a real cop he just had a fake badge, and then he killed the lady.

excessive honking for no reason = ticket (had 2 cops tell me this)

burning out = arrested (cops also told me this.. even if its raining, u cant peel out..)

one time i was holding a CD out the window of my friends car.. kinda shining it at this guy in a PT cruzer, he looks over and pulls out the badge.. we just keep going.. i think he thought we were gonna throw it at his car or somthing.. i dunno..

lol...you can try that, but I doubt it will work......a few years ago they had some guys down here that went and bought like five or 6 of the blue lights with magnets no the bottom (like you see in the movies and what not) and would pull people over and steal their car...if the person showed any resistance, they would kill them...police were actually telling people not to pull over unless they were completely sure that it was a police car...

I've had an off duty JP get behind me at a light, get out of his car and walk up to my window to tell me my license plate lights were out. Scared the **** out of me because I didn't see him walk up and suddenly some dudes knocking on my window. My cousin raced a guy down the highway for about twenty minutes before the dude pulled down the shoulder of his jacket to show him his police uniform underneath. The cop just waved and took the next offramp, I think my cousin probably threw that pair of underwear away:pface

Flipping someone off IS illegal, I just had to go to court for it (stupid security guard) It's technically Disorderly Conduct - Gesture
