I remember paying $35 (one-time) when I first signed up ... one or two generations back (of this site.)

LOL - Well, I have NO intention of us ever going back to a fee-based site as long as I can help it...

However, this $4500 hosting / maintenance bill I rec'd today was quite the kick in the groin!

We hit 1.2 million hits one day last week (in a 24-hour period). Big time!

one idea, you can require all visitiors to log in/register. Keeps all the lurkers at bay and helps the bandwith issue.

I know that if somebody links me to a site that requries registration to view....I make a mental not never to go there. If I can browse the forum and check out discussions first, then I'm more tempted to join.

zilvia requires registration to browse, and out of about 19,000 members, only 7,500 have one or more posts. that's only 39%.

nico has about 16,000 members and about 10,000 have made posts. that's 63%, or 1.6 times the percent that zilvia has.

see what happens when you require registration? people register, lurk for a while, and leave
