and i never had any other wheels to begin with, other than my blackies. which look sort of tacky and rice.
just out of curiosity, because I want to learn, I know most people recommend against spacers, but why? does it stress the lugs?
First off, oem wheels or steelies are better than crappy fitting wheels.
The first set of wheels I ever bought were 17x7+42 with 215/45/17's and they fit (albeit very sunken) just fine. I put 30mm spacers on just to get them a little more flush, but they were major FAIL.
I think the reason your wheels aren't fitting is a combination of the high offset and too large of a tire. But even that +35 offset should be as recessed as you're describing. That's strange.
Here's the deal with spacers: On a 240, 5-7mm is the widest slip-on spacer you'd want to consider. Beyond that, you are stressing your studs too much and risk breaking them.
Bolt on spacers allow more spacing without the stressed out studs. But the issue with bolt ons is that you're gonna have two sets of studs sticking out of your hub and trying to go into the same wheel where there are only enough holes for one set of studs.
There are 2 ways around that problem and only one that I consider safe. Solution 1 - Use 30mm spacers because they protrude the same distance as your stock studs and allow the wheel to sit flush and be bolted on properly.
Solution 2 - Use whatever size smaller than 30mm that you want and cut off the excess stud material sticking out. But I've heard this can weaken the strength of the stud.
So, IMO... your best solution would be to use 30mm spacers and get smaller tires (like 195/35/18).
But have you looked at the price of 30mm spacers?! They're like around $100 for two! And by the time you've bought smaller tires, you could have sold this whole setup for something alot better.
Really OP, it's not worth it to go thru the hassle of making those wheels fit. Put them on Craigslist for ~$400 obo, put your steelies back on for a little while and then hit the Nico and Zilvia classifieds for a much better setup on the cheap.
Just my opinion.

S14's like 18's better than s13's do.
Something like this would be a good starter wheel for you...
