Ive had an hks catback on my car for a while and I'm starting to dislike it. It's huge loud and obnoxious. So what I want to do is change things up a little. Heres is my idea.

idea 1:
New headers, ebay brand or obx or pace setter idk yet
test pipe
then and isis 3 inch straight pipe bolt on

idea 2:
Take it to a muffler shop and have them do a custom straight pipe exhaust
but what I don't know about that is do they custom make headers usually or do I have to buy some and they go from there?

idea 3:
pretty much the same as idea 2 but insteas of straight pipe I would go 2.5 inches all the way back with a thrush welded muffler on the end, turbo type

Im just wondering is 2.5 inches think enough for turbo?
any answers help or just your opinions, pics up soon

So you think your HKS is loud and obnoxious....... and your solution is a straight pipe!

good idea....

Its going to be more loud and more obnoxious, and for no apparent reason. If you want something quieter, drop bank on a BRM exhaust or an RS*R e-mag.

But anyway since you asked for help and not opinions:

Option 3 will be better than 2. Option 2 will be retarded loud. 1 and 2 will be the same.

Also, you should probably use 3" piping for turbo applications. But you can't have pacesetter headers and a turbo.....

I give three simple steps to fixing your problem and three ideas for your thinker.
And Don't get mad you asked for solution

1.) Take fartcan and 3 inch, toss it.

2.) put stock exhaust on car

3.)Sit down shut the f*** up and enjoy silence

4.) If you got pissed at 2,and skipped three. Well don't ask stupid questions like is x exhaust going to be louder than x exhaust when all you give us to work with is crap, are going to sound like crap,or just shouldnt be done for the simple fact its cheaper just to buy it premade.

5.) take off radiator cap, pull ka, put in sr, and replace radiator cap problem solved quieter car with same exhaust

6.)Be Bawler get a BRM, all problems solved,

I don't want silence I just don't want the rice sound, but lots of people are talking about the brm so I prolly will look into it.

basiclly with a ka and any straight pipe or 3 inch,it will all sound reasonably ricey. it is a 4 cyl after all. just look up some brm sound clips. you will like it

if there's a flange between the middle pipe & the muffler,

disconnect the muffler from the middle pipe/resonator & listen to it... sample A

i know there's still a mid-muffler...then disconnect that from the cat & repeat listening to it... sample B
---------------------------------------------------
here's a suggestion while you're contemplating on going turbo or staying NA:

so if you still like open pipe, then your choice to go B (with gutted cat, original cat, or test pipe)

if you like the sound of A, just get the fab shop or DIY to cut that fart can off the existing flange-pipe and weld/ clamp an open pipe to exit the back bumper.

---------------------------------------------------

(i agree that open pipe is very loud; you can youtube those as well if you're lazy to do disconnect your exhaust)

I rode with an open pipe for some time back in the day because the rust naturally open a big hole where the OEM s-bends were & the mini-muffler was also rusted out.

Being a DD for me, i just went with an aftermarket OEM replacement w/ a lifetime warranty & didn't have to impress anyone with my exhaust note

Or just have one of these made at an exhaust shop. I'm running a test pipe with 2.5" piping to a large resonator and a magnaflow muffler. Sounds pretty damn quiet .... just a little beefy at idle.

Let me start off by saying your on the wrong track...

Header+isis blast pipe (i have this setup) its stupid loud, raspy, and super stupid.

Ebay headers suck. They fit like crap and everything is just down right bad about them. Dont even get me started about the power loss after putting it on...go dc or dont put one on.

Blast pipes on 240s are super gay if your not boosted. They sound like s*** and are good for nothing other then a very small low end gain and a huge top end drop off.

You dont want to be super gay and slow do you?

Well im swaping my motor right now but i will be running a dc sport header, 2 1/2 test pipe and a brand new stock exhaust. Best of both worlds. Mean little grawl but still very quiet.

I wanna go 2.5 with a thrush welded muffler because it would be quiet but deep, problem is I know I'm going turbo in the near future and I'm not sure 2.5 will work

2.5 is fine for any turbo car thats not over 10-15 psi. 3" is overkill 99 percent of the time, hell you could run just a downpipe off a turbo car and it still would feel the same as a 3"

The Megan 2.5" Drift Spec is pretty good, not too loud and comes with a silencer for when you want it to be more quiet. It fits great too, tucks up super high. Just an option.

wow, i forgot how loud it was... sounds like the middle resonator/pre-muffler isn't even there

make sure you extend that pipe with something temporary; you don't want to inhale all those fumes (especially CO)

if you're not going to sell that muffler, cut it off from the flange & slip this on:

Image

then, just bolt that flange up & fab a coathanger to keep the pipe up... should be good to go until your next upgrade

Yea its pretty loud but I didnt take the whole exhaust off the straight 3 in pipe that wnet from the cat to just behind the rear axle is still there I only took off the muffler tip so what I'm thinkin is I could order a test pipe and cut one sides bolt on parts so it comes to the back like the old muffler did,- I could have my friend weld one of the hanger arms to it too.

Yo take it from me you really don't wanna rock a straight pipe unless ur turbo powered because it's loud and obnoxious, even with a turbo it gets annoying trust me I've done it plenty of times before. It sounds sick as f*** in low rpm but once you get on it good luck hearing any music, ur own thoughts, or even that cop pullin you over for noise pollution... Which brings me to my next point, I dunno where you hail from but if the laws are anything like they are out in Cali you will spend a lot of time being paranoid and watching out for the boys in blue. Yeah sure one fix it ticket is no problem but once you start rackin them up like receipts you'll be kickin yourself in the a**

Even with a turbo it can still get really loud and once again depending on local laws you may want want to limit drawing attention to yourself.

So here's my advice, if you are seriously thinkin of going turbo then save ur money and get an exhaust better suited for ur turbo'd engine after u get it swapped. If you wanna go NA then ur better off going with headers and a brm because any cannister exhaust is goIng to sound like a fart tube on an NA motor unless you go 3in with a 3.5 + in tip which is un-advisable because ur engine wont perform as well

Yep. 2.5 inch exhaust with a cat and resonator, bolt on. Unfortunately nothing is free. And, since your a broke and in college (I know, Im there), I bet you wont be turbo for a while. Settle with the 2.5 from BRM for 450 and sell it later down the road if/when you get boosted. Its good quality, nice sound, and will last for a good resale value. Or you could just get a nasty $0.50 silencer on the tip and I know you dont want that crap.

I live in Florida where nobody cares about the noise and Im thinking about going to the muffler shop across the street and seeing if theyll do a custom 2.5. I just dont know if they can make headers or if i need to buy some and have them do from headers back

ps: didn't know today's kids are calling the way i was describing as a temp fix until $ rolls in... "blast pipes" or "shotgun exhaust" LoooL :lolling:
